                      World History AP Summer Assignment

 Read the book Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. You can get the
 book at the library, any major bookstore or by shopping online. It is available in
   paperback. (It was a national bestseller and winner of the Pulitzer Prize.)

You MUST read the following chapters in the book:

Prologue Yali’s Question
Chapter 1: Up to the Starting Line
Chapter 2: A Natural Experiment of History
Chapter 4: Farmer Power
Chapter 6: To Farm or Not to Farm
Chapter 9: Zebras, Unhappy Marriages, and the Anna
Karenina Principle
Chapter 10: Spacious Skies and Tithed Axes
Chapter 11: Lethal Gift of Livestock

Feel free to read the rest of the book if you’d like, but you are not required to do
summaries for those chapters.

Time Management Plan
Take your time reading the book. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE
SUMMER. I would suggest spacing the reading out along the summer. Set due
dates for yourself for each part of the assignment.

Your entire assignment must be handwritten. It MAY NOT be typed. Your chapter
summaries and the answers to the discussion questions must be handwritten

Guns, Germs, and Steel Assignment- Part I

The concept of World History AP is to focus on the big ideas, concepts, themes,
and trends of history. Instead of focusing on minor events and occurrences, we
will focus on the big ideas that have shaped world history and our world today.
To get your mind thinking in this direction, as you read Guns, Germs and Steel
you will be creating a written summary of the Big Ideas, chapter by chapter.
For each assigned chapter, including the prologue and epilogue,
summarize AND illustrate the “big ideas”. The “big ideas” are the major topics
and themes of the course. They are the major ideas in which the course revolves
around. A copy of the themes of the course is attached. Focus on the big ideas
and don’t get bogged down in the science, unless you are really interested in that
aspect of it. One way to practice getting the main idea is to verbally explain the
main idea to someone after you have read each chapter. If you have made it
easy for them to understand, then you have successfully identified the main idea.
Guns, Germs, and Steel- Part II
After reading the book, answer the followi ng questions.
    1. What question is Jared Diamond trying to answer?
    2. What is his thesis (argument/debate point)?
    3. Is he successful in supporting his thesis? Why or why not? To what
        extent? Are particular chapters stronger than others? Explain your
    4. Do you agree with his theory? Why or why not?

    6. What is your definition of world history?
    7. How has Diamond’s book affected your thinking about world history?
    8. Is Guns, Germs and Steel the best title for this book? What title would you
        give to this book? Explain your answers.
    9. Would you recommend this book? Why or why not?
    10. What could be some alternative answers to the question Jared Diamond is
        trying to answer, besides his own explanations and answers?

Textbook Reading Assignment
You must pick up a copy of the first chapter of your textbook, which will be
photocopied, and on my desk in the Social Studies office. You MUST pick up a
copy of the chapter before the end of school. This part of the assignment also
MAY NOT be typed and must be handwritten neatly. You must read the first
chapter of the book and answer the questions, which are attached. Your answers
must be completed on loose-leaf and must be in complete sentences.

Make sure that your work is exclusively your own. Any evidence of plagiarism on
this assignment and on any other assignment in the course will result in a grade
of ZERO and disciplinary action for academic dishonesty.

Due Date
This project in its entirety is due on Friday, September 8th. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Please staple the Textbook Reading Assignment, the Guns, Germs and Steel
Assignment – Part I, and the Guns Germs and Steel Assignment- Part II,
separately. So on Friday September 8 th you should be handing in three stapled
assignments. These projects will be graded and will count toward your first
marking period grade.
