The first ACI Workshop on Sustainability was held in St. Louis, MO, in 2008, with discussion topics including sustainable development of concrete, green building, and international standards.1 During the workshop, the participants agreed that the concrete sector must work more diligently to clarify our industry's environmental responsibility to society and disseminate the significance of sustainability amongst members of the concrete sector. Information presented at the Concrete Sustainability Forum III included: EMERGING COUNTRIES Brazil "Concrete and Sustainability in Brazil," presented by Jos Marques Filho, President, Instituto Brasileiro do Concreto (IBRACON); Professor, Federal University of Parana; and Consulting Engineer, COPEL Brazil relies on renewable energy resources such as hydropower and biomass fuels; more than 77% of electricity is produced by hydropower. Brazil is also very active within ISO, and the Brazilian Organization of Standardization (ABNT) has adopted a new building performance standard requiring new, enhanced durability criteria and created a Board to study the environmental management of cement and concrete manufacture.
