Background and History:

Indian fashion scene is a function of the Bollywood queens. Much the same way, as
Oscar gowns and accessories take the air waves, Bollywood celebrities – movie stars –
get the circuit and the press: On roads, billboards, cellulose, radio and now-a-days –
even on the web.

Hollywood and Bollywood both have similar sounding names for a reason: Bollywood
emulated the former. And both of them drive many a trends, themes, fads, fashion and
yes, the same goes for celebrity – chatter: which is no longer called gossip: as “what
happens in Vegas – does not – stay in Vegas – but gets on the web, before you can hit –
cut-roll-flash-back, or retake.

But of course, there are some specificities that make Hollywood a bit different than the
one on the east.

Difference between Hollywood and Bollywood fashion, clothing, couture, trends and
retros ->manifests in 2 major dimensions:

       [a] Frequency

       [b] Relevancy and Amplitude.

Let me explain: Bollywood makes a bra.zillion times more celluloid than does
Hollywood. More movies per calendar => more songs=> more dresses worn by a female
bollywood star ( for example Katrina kaif in a single song will wear 4-5 different
costumes: yes, in one song - > saree, kurta, choli, lehenga, jeans, top, batik -> that‟s 7
different types – and within a type -> say saree – Katrina Kaif may wear 5 different
styles-within a given type/category of clothing: such as: red chiffon, black chiffon yellow
chiffon, green chiffon and with different saree blouses.

An average bollywood movie, featuring Katrina Kaif or anyone else for that matter –
would have around 6 songs. Now do the Math:

   (1) Each movie has 6 songs.
   (2) Each Song – on an average – has 5 different costumes.
   (3) Each costumes has 7 different styles to go along.

What‟s the final number of dresses?
Answer = 6*5*7 = 35 different dresses per movie.

The only thing left -> how many movies – on an average – are produced by India:

Here is a chart:

This is the data on 2009: YES, in ONE YEAR: number of hindi movies made = 235(
amazing, the number of days = 365). And the TOTAL number of movies – by india =
1288 – in ONE YEAR: and keep in mind – an Indian movie – is usally 3 hours – as
opposed to 1.5 hour Hollywood movie.

Means: from India - > 3.5 movies
EVERY DAY

AND EVERY OTHER DAY -> there is a
hindi movie -!!
Rank Language No. of films

DRIVERS of songs and Movies::: female celebrities and the clothes they
adorn:

Summary:
[a] Clothing fashion is driven by bollywood female stars

[b] movies in bollywood have songs. On an average there are 35 dresses in a movie. Each year
there are at least 365 movies – u can now do the math.. its cumbersome stats.

[c] Its hard to follow female stars – and yes, there are TV serials and them “tv stars too” which
also have a bearing on sarees lehenga cholin kurta dresses and jeans et all.

[d] those who sell clothes and other fashion accessories – { saree, saree blouses, kurta, bangles,
diamond, jewelry, gold et all} – hence -> use “brand ambassadors” and celebrity endorsements
– for clothing, fashion, couture, cosmetics etc etc and so on.

Life Cycle of female stars: in Bollywood:

[1] Lasts around 4- years – max. Usually, the roles of females – and for that matter –male stars
– are somewhat similar. Female celebrities, specially have limited roles: the requirement is –
beauty – and the roles are – dancing, moving lips ( the playback singers sing songs, the actresses
and actors move lips).

[2] as we all know, beauty and youth – doesn‟t last a life time: unless of course we are talking of
paulina porizkova, or Sophia loren or BoDerek or Monica Belluccci. Additionally, there is
another factor – called: „representation and association” – the younger people associate
themselves with younger celebrities: aside from obvious reasons, there is one more reason: the
older celebrities are liked by their previous generation – and the young always – have a
rebellious component to them. Do they not?

[3] Most females are not like Katrina Kaif – who just appeal to people from all walks of life age
groups, social class and what not -> she just has „that‟. Whatever „that‟ is equated to.
[4] The sad part in all this is: it‟s a mute point when it comes to female-actresses – and the
reason is: to act – one has to have a role, a story – a character – not just saree and saree blouse
or lehenag and choli or salwar kameez – and jeans and top { by the way Katrina Kaif in Race
song was both cool and hot and sweet and what not}.

I like Katrina-Kaif – not just because she looks like me. The fact that Katrina
Kaif is is also Ashkenazi Jew doesn’t matter to me, maybe it does to others,
where they relate to people by race and associations. I like Katrina Kaif –
because [a] she looks like me- ie. Olga-lednichenko shulman [b] Katrina kaif
is sweet and cool and hot and really she talks very sweetly and is extremely
       demure.

In the next sections: I will talk about what and how to find
out what‟s hot in the Indian – saree-lehenga-blouse, choli
kurta – sectors:

FASHION: SAREE-LEHENGA CHOLI BLOUSE KURTA -> BAROMETER:

to gauge a sense of fashion – what‟s hot and what‟s not – in Indian female costumes, all
one has to do is follows:

[1] Find out which celebrity takes the lion‟s share of chatter: with Google this has
become so easy –just count the number of results returned- both in text and in images –
Viola – you know who rocks the boat.

[2] For a westerner and even for Indians { those who don‟t watch Hindi movies, at least
not obsessively -> „cuz they are either:

[a] more or less the same or

[b] a remake – of some famous Hollywood movie

[c]once in a bluemoon – they may be original.

A quick look at Indian celebrity list (for females) make be a good place to start - for
those who don‟t even know – who Katrina Kaif is – or who Sonam Kapoor is. No
offense, but even Hollywood stars aren‟t known – everywhere. How many of us know
Rod Steiger, Sunny and Cher or for that matter – John Shlesinger. Anyway, hope you
got the point:
