Last fall in Rosemont, IL, the state of the US battery industry was examined in detail during an Advanced Batteries Cafe jointly sponsored by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Following small group discussions, participants came together to compare notes and raise additional questions. A major conclusion: A robust US battery industry needs a solid manufacturing base open to innovations leading to a sustainable competitive advantage domestically and globally. The battery industry is scattered, in its infancy, without a manufacturing depth of experience, lacking a focused effort, and without a commercial market strong enough to lead to the creation of a robust source of supply.
