Best Practice Title: Measurement Man
Submitted by: Susan Sweetser
Grade: LDC Academic Area: Math
Objective(s): To learn the meaning of customary liquid measurement terms
such as gallon, quart, pint, cup.
Curriculum Framework Standard(s): 3.M.1 and 3.M.2 and 3.M.5
Lesson/Activity/Strategy Description: This is a hands-on activity where
students create a visual replica of a man representing liquid measurement. It
shows visually how there are four quarts in a gallon, two pints in a quart and
two cups in a pint. Students can then refer to this as a tool in computing liquid
measurement problems. It can remain in the classroom as a reference tool.
Materials: Colored paper (5 different colors), brads, scissors, pencil, markers
Assessment(s): The students will be assessed by demonstrating they are able to
use the measurement man to convert units of liquid measurement. For example,
how many quarts are in two gallons?
