 Release Committee Comments
                                         Leave of Absence

Students are expected to be available during the academic year to attend classes, lessons, examinations,
assessments, rehearsals, performances and other activities. However, we understand that from time to
time you may have opportunities to undertake external performance engagements and/or teaching. We
believe that these experiences are extremely important but should not have a detrimental effect on your
studies.

It is essential that you complete a LEAVE OF ABSENCE FORM (copy overleaf) to be released from
college for any reason. Your leave of absence request is then considered by the Release Committee
which comprises Heads of Faculty, Head of Performance, Performance Manager and Heads of
Programmes. You should submit a Leave of Absence request form as soon as you know you want to
be away from College, regardless of whether or not you think your absence will clash with College
commitments. Please remember that, once the ensemble schedules have been published, we only
change the personnel in exceptional circumstances. It is important that you do not accept another
engagement until your Leave of Absence request has been granted.

Leave of Absence application forms can be found on the Intranet, under General Information for
Students/Absence, or obtained from Performance Management. You should return your completed form
to Louisa Stanway in Performance Management, who will inform you if your release has been approved,
conditionally approved or rejected via RCM email.

If you are offered an important professional engagement at short notice or are faced with a personal
emergency and require a quick reply, please email your request immediately to Louisa Stanway at
lstanway@rcm.ac.uk, including details of the engagement, and she will consult with colleagues before
answering the request as quickly as possible.
