1947-Forty two rail systems and in 1951 the systems
were nationalized as one unit

World’s 2nd largest rail network

Fleet includes 8300 locomotives, 39,000 coaching
vehicles and 3.5 lakh freight wagons.

Covers around 1 lakh track kms
     Indian Railways

          Work force - 1.65 million


Runs around 11,000 trains everyday, including
          7,000 passenger trains


Earlier manual information systems were used

CRIS(Centre for Railway Information Systems)

     • Established in 1986 by Ministry of Railways and started
 1     functioning from July,1987

     • Umbrella organisation for all computer activities on
 2     Indian Railways


     • Registered society having an autonomous status

Freight Operation Information System (FOIS)

Passenger Reservation System (PRS)/ Alpha Migration (CONCERT)

Freight Operations Information Systems (FOIS)

  It is a system for management and control of freight
  movement that also assists managers to optimise asset
  utilisation and provides instant access to information
  regarding the current status of their consignments in transit.




  FOIS comprises of the Rake Management System (RMS) for
  handling the operating portion and Terminal Management
  System (TMS) pertaining to the commercial transactions.
Freight Operations Information Systems (FOIS)

  Monitoring of all freight trains indicating their position in computerized
  territory and their expected time of arrival at destination.


  Full particulars of detachments from block rakes are recorded.


  Managerial reports regarding availability of rolling stock.


  It improves existing business practices and consequently reduces the
  operating costs while enhancing the quality of service.


  E-Payment of Freight.
Future Approach:

Design & Development of MIS, Data Ware House & Data Mining

Extension of the current business practice of bulk movement in
train load.

Global tracking of consignments in real time whether in rakes or
in individual wagons.

Reports giving passengers travelled and earnings realized train-wise for each
class for a selected period have been made available at the five PRS sites.
       Passenger Reservation System

PRS is running currently at 1,200 locations, Deploying 4,000 terminals,
covering journeys of 3,000 trains and executing ONE MILLION passenger
transactions per day.



Internet booking of tickets was started in August 2002.



TATKAL has been converted from a separate coach to a normal Quota and
enabled for all trains in 2004.

3 sec for network transaction.

Capable for providing reservations for 22 hours per day.
       National Train Enquiry System
                   (NTES)
NTES provides the following information to passengers:

Arrival and departure of passenger trains

Platform berthing of passenger trains

Facilities available at various stations ( e.g. retiring rooms)

More than 1.2 crore Rail passengers travel in
unreserved coaches and trains every day


Initially provided at 10 stations of Delhi area in the
first stage as a pilot project on 15 August 2002 .
Another 13 stations of Delhi area were provided with
UTS counters in the second stage on 2nd Oct, 2002.

          plan as well as maintenance expenditure.
     Vigilance Software System (VSS)
