Clients
The system’s clients are grouped in the diagram by role: Users: consumers to which coupons are targeted. Users can check, organize and redeem coupons on their handheld as well as on their PC. These two channels are implemented using mobc3 Content and mobc3 Coupon JSF presentation layer, respectively. The former deals with mobile content presentation. The latter is a standards-based JSF AJAX application geared towards desktop browsers. The system can provide di erent access levels for anonymous visitors and profiled users. Operators: advertisers and the Mobile Commerce Enabler can rely upon a web-based access to their respective back-o ce sites. Advertisers can manage their brands, coupon o erings, campaigns and points of sales and have access to detailed reports and billing related to their campaigns. MCE operators can manage the advertiser accounts and their privileges, and optionally approve the advertisers’ content; they have also access to reporting, billing information and application-level management and reports.
Sysadmins: system administrators have access to a system-level web interface where they can manage and monitor the system performance. Partners: business partners’ systems can interoperate with mobc3 Coupon through a public integration API implemented via web services, that exposes di erent functions according to their specific privileges.

Presentation tier A mix of di erent technologies are used to allow the di erent accesses outlined before: mobc3 Content: it’s the set of software modules responsible for user interaction and mobile content presentation. Presentation tier Admin web layer: this web console access is based on the JMX standard and is actually provided by the underlying application server. Business tier Data processing module: responsible for batch and scheduled data processing tasks, such as dealing with scheduled start/end of a campaign, periodic update of statistics etc. Its functional blocks are packaged as MBeans for better manageability. Business logic: it implements the core functions of the system. Each functional block is implemented as an MBean. For better testability the beans core functionality is implemented with DOJO classes in order to enable a continuous testing approach at development and maintenance time, and improve reliability. The users authentication/authorization service MBean is replaceable with a custom version if integration with existing systems is required. Persistence layer: Hibernate has been chosen as an ORM system and persistence layer, thanks to its maturity and proven technology. It allows for great freedom in the choice of the RDBMS without preventing RDBMS-specific SQL optimizations, and o ers a wide range of performance tuning options, quality and easy maintenance.

Data tier Thanks to Hibernate, the system isn’t tied to a specific RDBMS and is compatible with Oracle (9 and 10), PostgreSQL (8), MySQL (5 and 6) and MS-SQL (2000 and higher). The approach has been choosen to map from Java classes to database tables and from Java data types to SQL data types. It also provides data query and retrieval facilities, generates the SQL calls and relieves from manual result set handling and object conversion, keeping the client-specific applications portable to all supported SQL databases, with database portability delivered at very little performance overhead.
