Yarn Size Systems and Conversions
Yarn Count Number Systems
All types of textile yarns can be produced in different sizes and the two most common
sizing systems are based on:

 Length for a specific weight of a yarn (i.e. cotton count, metric)
 Weight for a specific length of a yarn (i.e. tex, denier)

Fixed Weight systems – These number systems typically show the number of length units
which make up a give weight of yarn.

Cotton Count = number of hanks per lb. (Using Ctn. Count - a hank = 840 yards) – system
typically used for spun yarns.

Metric Count = number of 1,000 metre hanks per kilogram or number of 496yds per lb.

In these numbering systems, the larger the number, the finer the yarn.

Fixed Length systems – These number systems typically show the weight of a given
length of yarn.

Denier = weight of 9000 metres of yarn – system typically used for continuous filaments.

Tex = weight of 1000 metres of yarn* – system typically used for Sewing Threads. *Yarn
refers to greige yarn prior to dyeing or finishing processes.

Decitex = weight of decigrams per kilometer or grams per 10,000 metres.

In these systems, the larger the number the larger the diameter of the yarn or thread.

Both Tex Size Systems and Metric Size Systems have brackets for Ticketing Purposes.
Below are these brackets.
