Dear Families,

On behalf of the 1/11 Armored Cavalry Squadron, we would like to welcome you to your new Army
home, Fort Irwin, California!

Fort Irwin & the NTC (National Training Center) is a world class training center for America's Soldiers,
known for its tight-knit community, vast recreational opportunities, and long history as the premier
Army training center.

Caring for families, as well as the well-being of the Soldiers, civilians and their families, is of utmost
importance. We have a very active Family Readiness Group (FRG) and we are here to help make
your transition to Ft. Irwin as easy as possible.

What is the Family Readiness Group? The Family Readiness Group or “FRG” is an organization of
family members, volunteers, and Soldiers belonging to a unit, that together provide an avenue of
mutual support and assistance, and a network of communication among the family members, the
chain of command, and community resources. This information and readiness can contribute to the
sense of family well being.

The FRG meets every month for morale-boosting activities and official meetings, during which we
distribute information on training schedules and local community activities. We hope this information
will offer you some comfort while transitioning to Ft. Irwin.

As we do not know at the time this letter is being written which troop your soldier will be in, we
encourage you if you have any questions about Ft. Irwin, to please feel free and contact the 1 st

                                                    Fort Irwin - California
Location
Fort Irwin is located approximately 37 miles northeast of Barstow, California midway between Las Vegas,
Nevada and Los Angeles, California. The High Mojave Desert's hills and mountains surround the installation.
Natural vegetation is sparse and mainly consists of mesquite, creosote, yuccas, and other low growing plants.
Beautiful sunsets, blue skies, sunny days and wide-open vistas are some of the pleasures of the desert that give
many a sense of freedom. However, expect the primary colors to be tan and brown. For those needing to see
green, Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead are two hours away providing tall trees and lakes. The base operator's
phone number is 760-380-1111.

History
On August 8, 1940, a Presidential order withdrew from public use almost 1,000 square miles of public land in
the High Desert of Southern California. The land was established as the Mojave Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Range
and later named Camp Irwin in memory of Major General George Irwin, a World War I battle commander. In
1951, the post became the home of the United States Army Armor and Desert Training Center and was
designated Fort Irwin in 1961. In 1981, the installation was re-designated as the National Training Center
(NTC) and since then its development as the premier training site of the U.S. Army has been nonstop. For more
information, go to the www.irwin.army.mil.

Population Served
Because Fort Irwin is a fairly small community, people living here get to know their neighbors. After a short
period, visits to the commissary and Post Exchange (PX) are usually accompanied by a series of friendly
"hellos." Children often live next door to their schoolmates, play on the same sports teams, or go to daycare
together. Fort Irwin maintains a small town atmosphere with town hall meetings and other community forums,
even though 4,000-5,000 Soldiers from other installations rotate through the NTC each month.

A Short History of the Blackhorse Regiment

The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment has a long, proud history of excellence that spans over a century and
includes military campaigns from the Philippines to the current Global War on Terrorism. The Regimental
Motto, “Allons,” means “Let’s Go,” and the regiment has been on the go since its activation as a horse squadron
at Fort Meyer, Virginia in 1901.
In December of that year, the Regiment was deployed to the jungles of the Philippines for two years.
From 1905 to 1911, the Regiment was involved in a series of missions, including a deployment to Cuba and
later participated in disarming aggressors in Trinidad, Colorado.
In March of 1916, the 11th Cavalry joined General John J. Pershing in a punitive expedition into Mexico to
capture the Mexican bandit, Pancho Villa, and neutralize his rebel army.
On 9 July 1919, the 11th Cavalry moved to its new post, the Presidio of Monterey, California. Here the
Regiment received its nickname, “Blackhorse,” from the local citizenry because of the distinctive black horses
the men used in training.
June of 1944 saw the newly re-designated 11th Cavalry Group move to Camp Gordon, Georgia, to begin
training for overseas deployment, entering France on 23 November 1944.
From 1957 to 1964 the Regiment served in southern Germany to patrol the Germany-Czechoslovakia
border and in March 1966 was ordered to deploy to Vietnam.
The Blackhorse arrived in the Republic of Vietnam on 7 September 1966 and proceeded to become a
legendary fighting force. While in Vietnam, the Regiment received its own distinctive patch, won 14 battle
streamers, and had three of its troopers awarded the Medal of Honor. On 1 May 1970 the 11th ACR
spearheaded a joint incursion into the area of Cambodia.
In May of 1972, the Regiment was headquartered in Fulda, Germany with squadrons in Bad Hersfeld
and Bad Kissingen. For twenty years the Regiment patrolled the East / West German border and was known as
the “Guardians of the Frontiers of Freedom”.
When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the Regiment deployed an aviation task force to support the U.S.
Kurdish relief efforts in Turkey and Northern Iraq. The rest of the Regiment deployed to Kuwait to secure the
country as it struggled to rebuild from war.
The Blackhorse Regiment was inactivated on 15 March 1994 and was then re-activated at Fort Irwin in
October of that year. Over the next decade, the Blackhorse served as the Army’s premier training unit setting
the standard for training the world’s greatest Army.
In June of 2004 the Regiment deployed the 58th Combat Engineer Company, Red Devils, in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom, attached to 2nd BDE, 10th Mountain Division in Baghdad, Iraq. On July 4th, 2004,
the Regiment received deployment orders for the Regimental Headquarters and both 1st and 2nd Squadrons.
2nd Squadron deployed and conducted full spectrum operations in the Babil Province while attached to the
155th Mississippi National Guard. 1st Squadron deployed to Baghdad, Iraq conducting full spectrum
operations in the city while the Regimental Headquarters deployed to Mosul, Iraq and assumed duty as the
division headquarters for Multi-National Force North-West. The Regimental Support Squadron was faced with
the dual mission of providing the Regimental Rear Command Post and continuing to support the rotational
training mission. 1-221 Cavalry, Nevada ARNG, “Wildhorse” was activated and deployed to Fort Irwin in the
fall of 2004, and formed the core of NTC’s premier Opposing Force.
The Regiment returned to Fort Irwin in January 2006 and within 90 days assumed the role of providing
the National Training Center with a premier Opposing Force that was now combat tested.
Since 2007 the Regiment has continued to perform multiple missions. The Red Devils again deployed to Iraq;
this time as part of Multinational Division North returning to Fort Irwin in February 2009. 1-221 CAV
performed combat operations as a battle space owner in Laghman Province Regional Command East for 9
months. While 144 Field Artillery “Mustangs” performed peace keeping operations as part of KFOR 12 in
Kosovo.
The Regiment continues to serve as the contemporary operational environment force that is essential to
preparing Brigade Combat Teams for duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Fort Irwin Pet Registration Require ments
All animals that are kept as pets on post need to be registered with the post veterinary services. For dogs and
cats there is a MANDATORY MICROCHIPPING POLICY. A microchip is a small computer chip inserted
under the skin with a syringe and requires no anesthesia (i.e it can be given like a shot). The chip carries a
number which acts as an electronic I.D. tag which can be traced back to the owner. Either AVID brand or
HOME AGAIN brand chips are acceptable. This policy is the result of the immense stray animal problem on
Fort Irwin.

If your pet already has a microchip, please bring the following information to the Vet Clinic during normal
business hours to register your pet: Microchip number, Vaccine history, patient records and your military ID
card. If you do not have a microchip, please set up an appointment and bring the above information with you
when you come.
Regulations specific to the number and breeds of animals permitted on Fort Irwin is available in the post
housing regulations.

Emergency Information
If your pet is having an emergency please do not hesitate to call the Fort Irwin Veterinary Emergency Service.
The process is as follows: Call the Weed Army Community Hospital Emergency room at : (760) 380-3777
The ER will then page the Vet Tech on call. The Vet Tech will call you and speak with you regarding the
situation. If your animal requires the treatment of a Veterinarian, the vet tech will have the veterinarian call you
to discuss options and/ or meet you for treatment. In the event that the post veterinarian in unavailable,
emergency care may be sought off-post. If it is necessary that care be provided off post, follow- up care can be
provided back at the VTF as the case dictates.
