     GENERAL INFORMATION
          MAURITIUS
This information is intended as a guideline and
information may change without prior notice. Timings
indicated are subject to seasonality. Some facilities are
offered at extra charge. E & OE.

AIRPORT
The International Airport is known as Sir Seewoosagur
Ramgoolam and it is situated at Plaisance on the South
East coast of the island.

FLIGHT CHECK-IN
Check-in times given for flights are the minimum check-
in times or connection times given by the applicable
airlines. Airports throughout South Africa are becoming
busier with the demand of travel and therefore it is
suggested you check in earlier than the stipulated times.

ARRIVAL IN MAURITIUS
On arrival in Mauritius, make your way through
Immigration, Health Checks and Customs to the
Arrivals Hall. You will be asked to present your return
air tickets as well as your passport at the Immigration
Counter. If you have booked a transfer, please proceed to
Counters No 16 or 17 where a Mautourco representative
will direct you to the transfer area. To assist with speedy
check-in for your transfer, please have your transfer
voucher ready.

RECONFIRM YOUR RETURN
JOURNEY
Please take your air tickets to the Mautourco representative
at your hotel as soon as possible in order to check your
departure date, flight time and re-confirm transfers.

                             1
HEALTH AND VISA REQUIREMENTS
South African passport holders do not require visas or
inoculations to visit Mauritius.

MOSQUITOES
Mauritius is a malaria free area and every effort is made to
keep it that way. Visitors to Mauritius are however advised
to use insect repellent particularly when sitting outside in
the evenings. Most of the hotels provide insect repellent
and “vape mats” in the rooms to discourage mosquitoes,
but it is advisable to take your own repellent.

BAGGAGE
Kindly attach the baggage labels provided in your
document wallet to your baggage for easy identification
by the Mautourco representative and the transfer driver
on arrival at the airport. Please refer to your itinerary
prior to departure for the permitted liquid quantities and
items allowed in your hand luggage.

INSURANCE
It is essential that travel insurance be purchased prior to
departure, covering cancellation or curtailment of flights,
personal accident, medical expenses, baggage or loss of
accommodation.

CURRENCY
The currency of the country is the Mauritian Rupee.
Rennies Bank has introduced a Mauritian Rupee card
which can be used as a debit card wherever the Visa sign
is displayed – it is best to check with the clerk that debit
cards are accepted prior to making the purchase.
Alternatively, you may take travellers cheques in any
hard currency you wish e.g. US dollars, Euros or
Sterling but commission on cashing them applies. There
is a facility for exchanging money on arrival at the
airport situated in the arrivals hall just before you exit
the terminal. On departure, please change your money
prior to going through passport control as there are no
facilities in the duty free hall.

                             2
BANKS
Travellers cheques may be exchanged at the cashiers
desks at the hotels. However, most hotels are close to
commercial banks where you may receive a better rate of
exchange. Cash points are available at most banks where
you may withdraw sums against your debit or credit card
so long as they can be used abroad. There are Bureau de
Change in both the Arrivals and Departures Halls.
Banking Hours:
Monday to Thursday 09h15 – 15h15
Fridays 09h15 – 17h15
(Commercial banks are closed on Saturdays)

CREDIT CARD PURCHASES
All hotels and most shops accept all recognized credit
cards. Cash is really only required for tips and purchases
from beach vendors.

CUSTOMS AND DUTY FREE ITEMS
Due to all destinations enforcing security restrictions
and altering these restrictions from time to time we
strongly suggest that you check with the airline a few
days prior to your departure with regards to the
applicable liquid ban for hand luggage. Items per adult
over 16 years which are duty free include:
2 litres of wine or beer
1 litre of spirits
200 cigarettes
A small quantity of perfume

DUTY FREE SHOP AT MAURITIUS
AIRPORT
Duty Free shops are located in the Arrivals and
Departure Halls. Articles are priced in Euros but
payment can be made by credit card, any foreign
currency or in Mauritian Rupees.

                            3
LANGUAGE
The official language is English and all notices and road
signs are in English. English is widely spoken, however,
French and Creole are the languages used by the local
people in every-day life.

TIME
Mauritian time is two hours ahead of South African time.

ELECTRICITY
The electric current is 220/240 volts AC. Two-pin plugs
are the same as in South Africa but three-pin plugs have
square prongs, the same as those in use in Britain. All
hotels provide hairdryers.

SECURITY
Ensure that your passport, air tickets and travellers
cheques are safely stored in the individual safe in your
room. Do not leave jewellery, cellphones, cameras or
any other valuables in your room or in public areas.
Beware of pick-pockets when exploring markets and
towns on foot. It is not advised that tourists purchase
excursions or cruises from unlicensed beach or street
vendors. Prices may be attractive but the quality of
service, safety of equipment or insurance coverage for
passengers may be sub-standard to that of licensed
operators.

CELLPHONES
To use your cellphone in Mauritius you require your
cellphone to be debarred for international roaming.
Contact your local service provider for further information.

BEVERAGES
Please check mini bar and bar prices before ordering
drinks. Shandrani hotel is an exception as it is a fully
inclusive hotel. It is not recommended that you drink the
tap water but bottled water is available from room service
or the mini-bar.

                             4
SHOPPING
Shopping in Mauritius is a pleasurable experience with
high quality goods available at local boutiques, factory
shops or on the beach. Quality jewellery purchases
include diamonds and gold which are duty free in
recognized shops. Pearls are sold by beach vendors and
range from high quality to the everyday freshwater
variety. Beachcomber hotels all have their own
Beachcomber Boutiques selling leisurewear under the
label Tropical Elegance. Fine Oriental carpets are found
in abundance and fashionable woollen garments are
manufactured locally. Pashminas vary from fake to the
real thing. Beach vendors expect to be bargained with.
Factory shops are located all over the island. Diesel
garments are also available but tourists are advised to be
cautious in ensuring merchandise is not counterfeit.

It is illegal to purchase or remove shells from the island
unless from a licensed vendor. Other good purchases are
beautifully embroidered Chinese linen and tableware.
Fun items include basket-ware, bead-ware and other
crafts either locally manufactured or imported.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Port Louis
Despite its crowded appearance, the capital city, Port
Louis, has many places of interest. Its traditional
architecture and newly built skyscrapers, create a
colourful mix of ancient and modern. Shopping offers a
contrast from the buzzing local market selling everything
under the sun in the clothing and food lines, to Caudan
Waterfront with its malls, boutiques, cinemas and 5-star
Labourdonnais Hotel.

                            6
Curepipe
This is a pleasant town favoured as a residential area. It
offers a choice of different kinds of restaurants and shops.
Close by is Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct volcano from
where you can enjoy an expansive view of the island.

Grand Bay
The centre of the northern tourist hub, this seaside
village has become the fashionable area for boutiques,
galleries, restaurants and clubs. It is also the starting
point for most excursions by boat to the northern islands
off the Mauritian coastline.

Botanical Gardens
The most famous on the island is Pamplemousses,
established in 1735 by Mahe de Labourdonnais. The 60
acre property boasts 500 species of plant, most notable
are the Victoria Regia giant water lilies and the rare
Talipot Palm.

Casela Bird Park
This peaceful park contains more than 2 500 birds
representing 140 varieties, including the endangered
Mauritian Pink Pigeon. Also of interest are the huge Koi
ponds, tortoises and the tiger enclosure. Cascades,
streams and lush tropical vegetation characterise the
park.

Chamarel
A scenic drive takes you to the Coloured Earths of
Chamarel where mounds of undulating earth contrast in
layers of seven different colours. Nearby, the Chamarel
Waterfall cascades into a deep gorge covered in
indigenous vegetation, one of the last remaining forested
areas of the island.

                             7
The Blue Penny Museum
Situated at the Caudan Waterfront, the Blue Penny
Museum is home to a rich collection of nautical and
navigational items. The museum is most known for it’s
two first-issue stamps which date back to 1847.

Domaine Les Pailles
This domaine depicts life in historical Mauritius. Take a
vintage train or horse-drawn carriage to view the many
exhibits which include the establishment of the sugar
industry. Landrover treks take you across game rich
plains into the mountains. Choose to dine in one of four
different restaurants.

EXCURSIONS
Bookings for these excursions and many more can be made
at the Mautourco Reservations Desk at your hotel.

Catamaran Cruises
A memorable day out on one of the many “Big Cats” has
become one of the most popular excursions. Mautourco
operates daily cruises from Grand Bay to Ilot Gabriel in the
north, from Shandrani to Ile aux Cerfs on the east coast and
from Black River to Tamarin and Ile aux Bénitiers on the
southwest coast. Most cruises include lunch and drinks
such as beer, wine and rum cocktails. Guests have an
opportunity to snorkel and equipment is provided by the
crew.

Undersea Walk
An undersea walk is an opportunity to get up close and
personal with hundreds of little fish which swarm around
the walkers. Specially designed diver’s helmets are worn
for the walk along the sea bed.

                             8

   or 4x4

Welcome to Beachcomber Hotels. The group is comprised
of eight individual properties, each with their own character,
style and atmosphere. But the high standards of service,
accommodation and cuisine are common throughout the
group. Whether your choice is a 4-star hotel or luxury at the
top end of the range, you will receive quality and personal
attention throughout your stay. Beachcomber has perfected
the art of making dreams come true. Relax and enjoy your
holiday.

Here are a few guidelines to assist you during your holiday
as a special guest of Beachcomber:

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Check-in time is 14h00. Should your flight arrive prior to
this time, the hotel will make every effort to let you have
your room on arrival. Otherwise, arrangements can be
made to store your luggage while you enjoy the amenities of
the hotel.

Check-out time is 12 noon. Should your departure for the
airport be later than this, you have the opportunity of using
the facilities of a Departure Lounge where your luggage can
be stored. Showers are provided should you wish to change
before departure.

RECONFIRMATION OF YOUR RETURN
FLIGHT
Please take your air tickets to the Mautourco representative
at your hotel as soon as possible in order to check your
departure date, flight time and re-confirm transfers if
required.

TRANSFERS
Your return airport transfer will collect you from your hotel
4 hours in advance of your flight departure time. This will be
confirmed by the Mautourco representative at your hotel
towards the latter part of your stay.

                             10
DRESS
While the atmosphere at Beachcomber hotels is generally
casual, fashionable beachwear tends to be the generally
accepted mode of dress during the day. Evening wear is
smart casual and long trousers and closed shoes for men.
During the cooler months from May to September, a light
sweater or jacket is recommended for the evening.

ENTERTAINMENT
Evening entertainment varies according to the character of
each hotel. Professional entertainers are drawn from the local
population. A big attraction at all hotels is the weekly
Mauritian evening when Sega dancers perform this rhythmic
dance and the menus for the evening offer typical Mauritian
specialities. Guests can join in the fun after the show.

EXCURSIONS AND CAR RENTAL
The representatives from Mautourco will assist you with
reservations for a number of different excursions. They will
advise you on places of interest and tours which include
exciting experiences. Should you wish to rent a car, your
valid South African drivers licence will have to be submitted
and an imprint of your credit card will be taken.

EXCHANGE OF FOREIGN
CURRENCIES
Travellers cheques can be exchanged at Reception.

CREDIT CARDS
Payment for your extras bill can be made by credit card at all
hotels. Cards accepted are American Express, Diners, Visa
and Master Card.

BEVERAGES/MINI-BARS
Each room has a mini-bar with a choice of alcoholic or soft
drinks and snacks. Whatever is consumed is replaced daily
and charged to your room account. Certain pre-paid all
inclusive packages however would include mini bar items or
a selection thereof. Drinks bought outside the hotel must not
be stored in the mini-bar. Please check costs of the mini bar
items on corresponding price list before consumption.

                             11
TIPPING
Tipping of hotel personnel is not mandatory, but a
demonstration of your appreciation for good service is
welcomed. Personnel who are deserving of tips are porters,
room cleaners and waiters in bars and restaurants who have
been particularly helpful. Tipping of transport personnel is
also appreciated and drivers of transfer vehicles, tour coach
drivers and guides are deserving of recognition. Tipping
should be in local currency.

LAUNDRY SERVICE
A laundry service is available Monday to Friday. Laundry
should be handed in before 09h00 and will be returned the
following day after 13h00. No laundry service is available on
public holidays.

GOLF
Paradis and Dinarobin share an 18-hole championship golf
course. Hotel residents are required to pay a green fee for a
round of golf and also for hire of clubs and a golf cart if
required. Shandrani has a 9-hole mashie course which is both
challenging and entertaining for holiday golfers. No green fee
applies at Shandrani. A charge for golf balls applies and there
is an additional cost for hire of golf clubs at Paradis. Enquire
about bookings at the guest relations desk at your hotel.

Paradis Golf Club is now also associated with two other world-
class golf clubs in Mauritius – Golf du Château and Tamarina
Golf Club. Preferential rates and perks apply to Paradis and
Dinarobin guests playing at one of these two golf clubs.

HEALTH AND FITNESS
Most hotels have modern health and fitness centres all with
modern equipment. Access to most facilities is free for hotel
guests. Children of certain ages would need to be
accompanied by an adult when using gym and fitness facilities.
Massage, beauty treatments and hairdressing are available at
an extra charge. Minimum age requirements are applicable to
guests making use of the health centre or spa facilities.

                             12

An Infirmary is available on most hotel premises manned by
qualified medical personnel able to deal with minor ailments
or injuries. Medication is also available for purchase. A
doctor is on call for emergencies.

BOB MARLIN MINI CLUBS
The Mini Club is set in the hotel grounds and operates
7 days a week from 09h00 – 16h30 and 18h00 – 21h00. It
caters for children between the ages of 3 – 12 years.
Attendance is free-of-charge. Entertainment, excursions
and games are supervised by professional staff. A special
dinner is served for children. Please check times on arrival
at the hotel. Lunch is provided at an additional cost at all
hotels except for Shandrani where lunch is automatically
included.

Babysitters are available on request at all hotels and

Meeting current demands in the global hospitality industry,
Beachcomber hotels have now implemented non-smoking
policies at each of their hotels. All rooms' interiors are non-
smoking; most terraces and balconies permit smoking.
Restaurant policies differ from hotel to hotel and enquiries
should be made at time of check-in as to the policies
pertaining to your hotel of choice. Bars tend to remain as
