									Section 1: Course Objectives
Students at the ELI need to demonstrate in class that they have met the following
objectives for each skill and level listed below. If students demonstrate to their teacher
that they have learned these skills by the end of the semester, they can move up to the
next level. Students in reading and writing levels 40 and up should understand the
forms, implications, and consequences of plagiarism.

Level 10

                 Refer to the days of the week and the months of the year
                 Recognize the singular/plural, present/past/future tenses, and basic
                  prepositions in contextualized speech

              Additional Objectives, as needed. You must be able to:
               Spell out words (ex. give spelling of name, home country…)
               Use basic vocabulary such as days of the week, months of the year and dates
                 (ordinals), as well as vocabulary for performing basic tasks such as shopping,
                 riding the bus, going to a doctor, and eating in a restaurant

Writing          Have reading comprehension skills in all contexts that is near-native
                  (including inference, skimming, scanning, guessing for meaning)
                 Use higher order thinking skills to critique concepts and data from a group of
                  readings or a series of graphs and charts
                 Write a timed, five-paragraph argument essay. The essay must use:
                   argument
                   counterargument
                   refutation
                   concession (optional)
                 Outside of class, write a short, academic research paper with appropriate
                  citations, quotations, and references, and single quotation marks, brackets
                  and ellipses when needed.

                 Participate in transactional interactions over the phone with near-native
                  facility
                 Have pronunciation that is readily understood by native speakers or have
