Art and antiques rising in value, latest data
from the Royal Institution of Surveyors shows
Jessica Bown

Prices in the arts and antiques market are on the up due to a lack of supply, according to the latest
UK Arts & Antiques Survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The survey shows that values of art and antiques continued to edge up in the first three months of
2010.

And the rise is particularly noticeable at the lower end of the market, making a potentially profitable
investment available to even those with rather tighter purse strings.

According to the All Lot price balance, which provides a snapshot of the overall art and antiques
market, 24% of the surveyors working in this area said prices rose by for items in the £1 to £1,000
price range during the first quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, 27% of surveyors noticed an increase in the value of those worth between £1,000 and
£5,000.

And for art and antiques of higher value, of between £5,000 and £50,000 and £50,000 plus, a still
fairly impressive 18% of surveyors reported that items were selling for higher prices.

Silver and jewellery remain strong sectors with 57% and 41% of surveyors reporting rising rather
than falling prices in these categories respectively.

However, last year's signs of a recovery in the contemporary art market proved short lived, despite
a positive performance by oil paintings and watercolours at the higher end of the market.
Simon Rubinsohn, RICS chief economist said: "Last quarter's improvement in the contemporary art
market has not turned out to be a solid turnaround.

"But the arts and antiques market remains a strong performer as an asset class with prices rising
in nearly all categories."
When prices for a particular asset class are rising, it is often a good idea to avoid it in case the
bubble is about to burst.

However, the RICS research reveals that overall surveyors expect demand to outstrip supply over
the coming months.

Prices are therefore likely to continue rising, as long as there are fewer items available to buy then
there are potential buyers.
This is particularly true as long as people remain nervous about the housing market.

Rubinsohn said: "The lack of supply will continue to push prices up as long as transaction levels
remain low in the housing market."

That said, unless you are an expert, you should only generally buy art and antiques if you would
like the item in question in your home, as there is no guarantee that you will be able to sell it on for
a profit.
