Giordano is the leading French solar water heating company with over 30 years of solar product
manufacturing experience. Their solar systems are manufactured in various factories around the world
and carry international certifications from France, Germany, Spain and Portugal as well as the SABS
Mark of Approval. Giordano is solar heat’s core product.

solar heat has recently launched the GioSol range incorporating the Kwiksol tank with the Giordano
collector. The GioSol system also carries the SABS Mark of Approval. The GioSol range is a double
jacketed tank system. We introduced this as our mid range system.

                                                          HOW DOES IT WORK
                                                          The most common type
                                                          of solar heat hot water
                                                          system operates using a
                                                          natural convection
                                                          process known as the
                                                          thermosiphon principle.

                                      Black surfaces absorb heat and hot water
                                      rises. For a thermosiphon system to work, the
                                      solar geyser must be situated above the solar
                                      collector.


                                      DIRECT SYSTEM
                                      Direct systems, also known as open circuit
                                      systems, circulate water directly from the
                                      geyser through the solar collectors. A direct
                                      system should only be used in frost free areas
                                      or in areas that have no lime in the water.


                                      INDIRECT SYSTEM
                                      Indirect systems, also known as closed circuit
                                      systems, circulate heat transfer fluid between
                                      the geyser and solar collectors. The heat
                                      exchanger acts like a ‘solar element’ and
                                      transfers captured heat energy into the
                                      potable water within the geyser.

                                      weather and water conditions.

                                              You can install your geyser
                                              under the roof as long as
                                              it is positioned higher than
                                              thecollector. The collector
                                              must be fitted externally,
                                              inclined and facing north.

                          as a split system and makes use of natural
                          convection - thermosiphon for its operation

                                               If a thermosiphon installation
                                               is not possible. The geyser
                                               and collector can be
                                               installed separately using
                                               forced circulation.



                           This type of solar installation is referred to as a
                           pumped system and makes use of a small
                           circulation pump. The pump is solar powered.

                                                     SIZING A SOLAR WATER HEATER

When sizing an electric geyser, one usually considers how many people will be using the hot water and how often during the day.

Example: for a family of four consisting of two children who bath in the evening & parents who shower in the morning, one could install a
150litre geyser. The children would use hot water at night and the elements would then heat the water for use the following morning. After
the morning usage, the elements would again heat the water during the day ready for the children’s bath time and this cycle would
continue daily.

When sizing a solar water heater, one must consider that during the sunshine hours of one day, all the hot water for the evening and
mornings bathing requirements must be heated and stored. This therefore requires a much larger storage capacity which is usually
double that of a standard electric geyser
