Dear Parents,

Learning how to give freely of yourself to better a community is an essential part of growing in
faith and trying to live as God wants us to. During the Lenten season, the students will be
offering their volunteer services to the community. The purpose of this assignment is to provide
students with the opportunity to give and “follow in the footsteps of Jesus”.

Over the course of 40 days, students will be expected to volunteer 4 hours of community
service. These hours may be spent in a variety of ways. However the class has been encouraged
to spend their time doing a variety of volunteer tasks in service to others.

The following is a list of ways students may volunteer their time or organizations they may wish
to help out at.

Food Bank Aiding the Elderly (shoveling side walks,
                                                   driveways, yard-work – parent approval
                                                   needed)
Soul’s Harbour Visiting the Elderly at a Senior Citizens home
                                                   (parent approval required)
       Marian Center Babysitting (without payment)
Humane Society Church service (youth ministry, set up, clean
                                                   up)
       Cancer Society Altar serving
       Diabetes Foundation
       Heart and Stroke Foundation
                                            * Please note, for several organizations students will
need to call and make preparations in advance.
Other ideas… * Parents, please help your child make arrangements
for their volunteer hours. Some tasks may be
completed for family, friends or neighbours.
After the students complete their volunteer hours, the supervising adult is asked to complete the
“Lenten Leadership Form” and state how many hours were spent and the task that was
completed. The students will be expected to fulfill their 4 hours of service and hand in their
forms prior to Easter break. Therefore, students will need to organize their schedules
accordingly, to allow for the necessary time. In addition to completing the forms, students will
be expected to complete a Lenten Reflection paper. There will be more information to follow
in Religion on this assignment. This assignment will be assessed and included on the Report
card.

In order to make this Community Service Project a success, please discuss with your child ways
they may complete their Lenten hours. If you have any questions, please contact me at 791-
7270.

Service Reflection
How is your Lenten Community Service going? Have you completed your 4 hours?

If yes, then what have you done?

If no, then who are you going to contact this week so that you can complete your
hours before the due date of: April 21st, 2011.

How are your efforts going to help the lives of others?

In addition to completing Lenten Service hours, you will be responsible for writing a
2 page reflection (typed, double spaced, 12 pt font) that explains exactly and
specifically …

1. What you did for community service,
2. Who you helped,
3. Why this person or the organization needed your help,
4. How your efforts helped in the lives of others,
5. How does this service reflect the works of Jesus, and finally,
6. How you have grown as a person (spiritually, mentally, emotionally…)

* You will be given 2 class periods of ½ hour each to complete this reflection. If you
are away when the time is given, then you will be responsible for completing the
reflection on your own.

* Please include a cover page (name, date, assignment title) and photos (if possible)
of you completing your service work.

* Be sure to also return you Lenten Service hours sheet.

* Reflection is also due April 21st.
