Your Majesty

I am deeply concerned that Suliamon Olyfemi, a Nigerian national, may be at risk of imminent
execution. He is believed to have been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia in 2004 in connection
with the death of a Saudi Arabian policeman in 2002. Suliamon Olyfemi has always maintained his
innocence.

According to reports, on the 28th of September 2002 a group of men, among them a policeman
arrived in an area where many African nationals worked. An argument escalated and the policeman
was killed, and next day security forces carried out arrests in the area.

Suliamon Olyfemi and twelve other men were tried in an unfair trial connection with the death of
the policeman. They did not have legal representation and although the trial was conducted in
Arabic, a language they did not speak, they were not provided with adequate interpretation;

The twelve men arrested with Suliamon Olyfemi were sentenced to prison terms and flogging.

I strongly call for the Saudi Arabian authorities to commute the death sentence of Suliamon
Olyfemi.

Some of the men alleged that they were tortured in detention. Therefore, I also call for the
authorities to investigate the allegations of torture and to ensure that those responsible be brought to
court.

In April 2004 the UN Commission on Human Rights passed a resolution calling on countries "to
abolish the death penalty completely and, in the meantime, to establish a moratorium on
executions".

Consequently, I strongly urge that Saudi Arabia establish a moratorium on all executions, thus
bringing the country in line with this UN resolution.

Yours sincerely
