					                 About Us!
Pantano Christian Church (PCC) is a non-denominational church that embraces a
wide diversity of people. This church isn’t just a place, but is a group of people who
love God. We are a grace-based community that seeks to help people find hope,
help & healing. We accept everyone who wants to join the journey of seeking &
serving God.

Pantano is a serving church, rather than a sitting church. We purposely seek to
engage in compelling opportunities that are making the world a different place; a
better place. We encounter God in ways that are dynamic & healing to many of
life’s hurts, habits, & hang-ups.

This Pathway Handbook is designed to help us share our journey with each other
to make our world different by loving people to Jesus.

The Pantano Pathway
The Pathway describes the process and tools through which we get connected with
God & with others. The Pathway provides places to gather, belong, grow & serve
that help us to live out our core values (described by the acronym STEP on page 8
of this handbook) & discover our passions to make our world different. The purpose
of this Pathway Handbook is to help you find your place at Pantano & within the
Kingdom of God. These places are:

Places to Gather: These are services, events and seminars through which
we gather in large groups to worship, learn & celebrate together. These places
are listed on page 38 of this handbook.

Places to Belong: These are Life Groups that meet to share a common
interest such as cooking, crafts, playing games or recreational activities. These
are great places to meet people & develop long lasting friendships.

Places to Grow: These are Life Groups that focus on maturing our faith.
Examples include our Adventure Now course that explains the basics of Chris-
tianity or our 12 week Crown course that teaches about stewardship. These are
great places to learn how to follow Jesus & to be challenged to grow in our faith.

Places to Serve: These are Life Groups that focus on serving God out of
our passions and gifts. These groups put our faith in action on our campuses,
throughout Southern Arizona and reach out to people throughout the world in
countries like Mexico, India, Africa, Ukraine & Peru. These are great places to
live out our faith & bring the Good News of Jesus to people everywhere.

Discover your place in the Kingdom of God by joining a Life Group & finding your
Place to Belong, Grow or Serve. If you are new to Pantano, find your campus on
page 10 or page 42 to find some simple steps to get started on the Pathway. If you
have additional questions contact our Pathway Pastor, Bill Fisher at 298.5395 x218

I love this church! Why? Because we exist to make a difference in the
lives and communities around us. We exist not just to serve ourselves,
but to serve those who need love and need to know Jesus. We exist
to help you find a place to belong, a place to grow and a place to serve.
Pantano Christian Church is not just an organization or a name or even
an event; it is people who are following Jesus to the best of their ability
and put love into action.

For us it is all about following Jesus well. We follow him because we
believe he will lead us to the heart of God and will direct us to do those
things which honor God. We’ve looked carefully at Jesus and we are
overwhelmed by his love for all people, his sacrifice for all people and his
incredible wisdom for all people. He’s at the center of everything we do.

Pantano Christian Church is a place where we welcome folks who are
broken and hurting. This is a place of incredible honesty, transpar-
ency, vulnerability, acceptance and grace. We like to be real. We value
authenticity. We don’t pretend to be okay when we’re not. We embrace
our messes and offer grace to each other as we learn how to rebuild our
lives in God together.

But we’ve learned that we just can’t follow Jesus well, experience life as
God designed it or grow through our brokenness alone. We need others.
As busy as my schedule gets, I share life with two groups every week.
They are vital for my wellbeing. We love our times together in worship
services and large group events, but real life happens best in life groups.
I want to encourage you to get connected with a life group where you can
be known and know others. In a life group we find a place to belong,
a place to grow and a place to serve. This handbook will help you find
places to get connected.

Join us on the wonderful adventure of finding God, living with and for
God and making a difference.

Together to make the world different,

              Glen Elliott
              Lead Pastor

                PCC History
Where We Came From
Everybody has a history. Our histories are an important part of our identities. Here’s
some of the history of Pantano Christian Church:

The church was started in a home in 1961 by a group of faithful people who were follow-
ing Jesus. Later, they became Pantano Christian Church &, seven years after starting,
purchased their first building.

By 1993, the church had grown to more than
1,000 believers & relocated to the East Tucson
Campus 18-acre site. In 2006, we launched
the Vail Christian Church meeting in Vail, AZ.
In 2008, we launched the Sierra Vista Campus
in Sierra Vista, AZ.

Who We Are
However, Pantano Christian Church cannot be defined by its property & buildings. We are
a people following Jesus. We are wild about God.

The church has its roots in the “Christian Church” – an
American non-denominational movement that highly val-
ues unity among Christians & seeks to base its teaching
& practice on the models found
in the New Testament. Here are
                       some mottos that have described
                       our historical connection:
                       • “We are not the only Chris-
                       tians, but Christians only.”
           • “In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, tolerance. In all things, love.”
           • “Where the Scriptures speak, we speak. Where the Scriptures are silent,
               we are silent.”

Pantano Christian Church continues to be an indepen-
dent non-denominational church that intentionally seeks
to unity with other churches & Christian groups. We are
about advancing the Kingdom of God & not our particular
organization or name. Our mission makes it clear who
we are. We are all about
                               “Loving people to Jesus
                               & launching passion-
                               ate people to make our
world different”. Join us & be a part of the story & history
                               that God is writing.

PCC Basics
Mission Statement
• Loving people to Jesus
• Launching passionate people to make our world different

Guiding Principles
• Following Jesus is simply the authentic daily process of loving God with all our
being & loving our neighbors as ourselves.
• Ministry extends to every activity of a believer’s life.
• Family is the primary ministry of the believer.
• Ministry consists primarily of loving people in practical ways: by serving, doing
good works, experiencing God’s grace, mercy, acceptance & healing, & equip-
ping people to do the same.
• Life-ministry happens best in relational communities that are small enough for
each person to be known & celebrated.
• Loving people to Jesus (discipleship) is living life with people while helping
them move positively toward God, not just covering a curriculum or being in-
     volved in “church programming”.
• People at every level of faith & doubt are welcome in our community life & com-
     munity property.
• Leaders are primarily servants who influence, encourage, equip, & empower
people to use their passions & gifts to serve others.
• Leaders are continually developed with emphasis given to unique gifts, a ser-
vant’s heart, practical leadership & ministry skills, a compelling life of passion &
integrity, & depth of relationship with God.
• Our ministry approach is permission-granting & entrepreneurial, & leans toward
freedom, rather than control; risk, rather than safety; individuality & diversity,
     rather than sameness.
• Leadership structures connect people based primarily on relationship & influ-
ence rather than on departmental or arbitrary assignment.
• Our time, energy, & resources are focused on recognizing & joining in the
     movements of God.
• Large group meetings are best utilized for enhancing the experience of our
relational communities & connecting with seeking people.
• We embrace changing methods, structures, & language in order to connect
with, & positively influence, our culture.

                                        6
           Our Belief and
           Commitment
For us, Pantano Christian Church, the journey of following Jesus is a matter of both
the head & the heart. Below we list some key propositions that with our mind help
to define our faith, but even these are utterly incomplete. We also must add the
involvement of the heart which adds the dimension of a bold, life-long, authentic
pursuit of God as revealed to us in the life & teaching of Jesus. These propositions
of faith describe the essential things we believe in & are committed to as we seek
to follow Jesus & to experience a deep & meaningful relationship with God.

Therefore, we believe in & are committed with our whole being to…

• The one eternal God who is love, revealed in three persons as Father, Son &
    Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14).
• Jesus, who is the “Christ, the son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16), who
died for our sins, rose again & will return one day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Titus
    2:13).
• God, who is always present in all believers through the person of the Holy Spir-
it. The Holy Spirit is active in transforming us into Christlikeness & empowering
us to make our world different (John 14:16-17; 1 Peter 4:10).
• The Bible as God’s primary message or word to us, a guide for living & our
    trustworthy & final authority (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
• A loving God who wants to save every person from the power of sin so that
we may be free to do what is good. Salvation is a gift from God through Christ
which allows us to be in deep relationship with our Father, now & forever.
    (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:4-8).
• God, who is bringing about a spiritual revolution & wants to transform our lives
    & our world as his kingdom comes on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 4:17;
    6:10).

                                      7
Pantano’s Core Values - S.T.E.P.
STEP is an acronym that helps to describe Pantano’s four core values. Everyone at
PCC is encouraged to Take the STEP by embracing all four of our core values in our
lives and finding our unique place in the Kingdom of God. STEP are the values through
which we express our relationship with God and engage our world. The Pantano
Pathway provides places to belong, grow and serve that help us to live out these core
values and discover our passions to make our world different.

Sharing Life Together
From the very beginning God knew that “it is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis
2:18). God intended for us to share life together. At PCC we share life together through
a Life Group, which is a smaller group of people who are seeking to simply live life
together out of their shared interests, passions & desires. We believe that we should not
be “only interested in our own life, but be interested in the lives of others.” (Phil 2:4). It
is in these Life Groups that we find people who care for us & hold us accountable to our
relationship with God because “as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
(Prov. 27:17).

 Transforming into
 Christ’s Likeness
A follower of Jesus has begun a process of transformation in which, “we are being
changed to be like Jesus” (2 Cor. 3:18). A follower of Jesus seeks to “not be shaped by
this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able
to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to Him and
what is perfect” (Rom. 12:2). As we share life together in our Life Groups, we seek to
encourage one another to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus, &, as Jesus did,
we seek to make our world different.

                                       8
Entrusted with Time,
Talents and Treasures
God is the giver of life & the owner of all that we have in this world, “for everything
in heaven and earth is yours” (1Chron. 29:11). Each of us has been given a limited
amount of time, talents and treasures to enjoy and to use appropriately for the purposes
of God’s kingdom (see Luke 12:13-21). Jesus promised that He will come again and
will take an account of what we have done with our lives (see Matt. 25) & He told us to
“always be ready, because you don’t know the day your Lord will come” (Matt. 24:42).
God has given us talents, abilities & “gifts to prepare God’s holy people for the work
of serving, to make the body of Christ stronger”(Eph. 4:11-13). God has also entrusted
us with treasures & material blessings & Jesus reminds us not to “store treasures for
yourselves here on earth where moths and rust destroy them and thieves can break in
and steal them. But store your treasures in heaven where they cannot be destroyed”
(Matt. 6:19-24).

Participating in the
Great Commandment and
the Great Commission
God expects that His people will be active in loving people to Jesus & making the
world different. The Bible records many commands from God to His people but Jesus
helps us to realize the greatest of the commandments is to “love the Lord your God
with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and most important
command. And the second command is like the first; Love your neighbor as you love
yourself ”(Matt. 22:37-40). We love our neighbors when we do as Jesus did & care
for the sick by bringing healing & assisting the poor by bringing hope & educating the
next generation to carry on the work of the church. Jesus has commissioned us with a
responsibility to “Go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the
name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that
I have taught you”(Matt. 28:18-20).

   Life Groups
People connecting with God & each other in Life Groups is the core element of life at
Pantano Christian Church.

Life Groups are simply this: people getting together to do a variety of things that
                                                    are interesting, fun, & purposeful.
                                                      Topics include everything from
                                                       motorcycle riding to Bible
                                                        study, from scrapbooking to
                                                            prayer, from parenting to
                                                            support groups. Topics
                                                             & activities are chosen
                                                             by each group’s leader
                                                            based on their own
                                                           interests & passions.
Even though the topics & activities

   Life Groups
People connecting with God & each other in Life Groups is the core element of life at
Pantano Christian Church.

Life Groups are simply this: people getting together to do a variety of things that
                                                    are interesting, fun, & purposeful.
                                                      Topics include everything from
                                                       motorcycle riding to Bible
                                                        study, from scrapbooking to
                                                            prayer, from parenting to
                                                            support groups. Topics
                                                             & activities are chosen
                                                             by each group’s leader
                                                            based on their own
                                                           interests & passions.
Even though the topics & activities
are diverse, the purpose of every
group is to help people develop life-giving
relationships with other people and to discover
the benefits of a life-giving relationship with God. Life
groups take on serving activities, community projects
& short-term mission trips that help make the world different & fulfill a purpose in God’s
Kingdom.
Life Groups run on a semester system, like the schools – fall & spring. That gives
people the flexibility to join in with groups at times that fit their needs & interests.
