                                     April 2008

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back to Term 2! Please take some time to read this newsletter. Hope to see many of
you at the various PDs and Network meetings.

1. VELS Standards and Progression Points-Moderation:
Secondary schools
This half day professional learning activity for Secondary LOTE (Languages Other Than English) teachers
of Italian is to work on moderation of VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards) level 5 and 6
Standards and Progression Points.
Teachers will analyse and appraise student work in order to develop a common understanding of the
standards and thus work towards making consistent, on-balance judgments about student achievement.
Moderation of student assessment is an important element in the introduction of VELS and its related
assessment:
“Sharing, reflection and collaborative assessment processes, using the sample material as needed, will
enable teachers to develop common understanding of the standards and to make valid judgements about
student performance that are consistent within their own classes, with their colleagues in their own
school, and around the state.”
Victorian Essential Learning Standards Overview, Page 16

Participants must bring at least one example of completed student work for analysis. An
outline of the context in which the work was done also needs to be included (When in the year
was it completed? Time allocated, scaffolding, modelling, vocab lists, use of dictionary etc.)

4. PODCASTING FOR LOTE TEACHERS

The relevant use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in student learning facilitates
engagement and can enhance the LOTE program.

A Podcast is an ideal tool for teachers of LOTE as it allows students to be immersed in spoken
language that is both relevant to student interests and pitched at the right level. Podcasts are a
valuable vehicle in LOTE to enhance student engagement and learning. They are best produced by
teachers and/or students.

At the conclusion of this workshop participants will have the skills to make an educational Podcast.
They will have made the first episode of their Podcast, have it published on the internet, and listed in
the iTunes podcast directory, so that their students can subscribe to it and transfer it to their iPods
the next day!

The course will use the computer labs at the Parkmore centre. Participants will be provided with a
booklet and CD containing software they will need to reproduce the steps followed on their own
computers at home.
Presenter:
Andrew Douch from Wanganui Park SC will present this course. Andrew was awarded an Australian
Government Award for Quality Schooling and was named the Victorian Microsoft Innovative Teacher
of the Year 2007, for his work with Podcasting.
