Instruction for NATE Online Testing Sessions
The intent of this document is to provide instruction on creating and executing an online testing session. Their are a number of advantages when using online testing: • No paper exams need to be ordered and kept secure. • No waiting for results as students receive their scores instantly. • Online exams are more cost effective than paper exams.

Instruction for NATE Online Testing Sessions
To begin, open a browser and direct it to: www.natetesting.com As you can see, this page is used for a variety of purposes. You first need to login as a proctor to create an online testing session.

This is where you tell NATE who you are by logging in with your Proctor ID and password. If you don't remember your password, call one of the numbers listed for help.

At this page you enter your Proctor ID number, including the dashes. Then enter your password

On this page you select Create test session to continue. You will return to this screen after the testing session is complete to close the session out.

At this point, you'll enter specific information about the session. Take note that fields with a red asterisk are required.

At this point you're given the Session ID number. Write this number down as you'll need it to begin the online test session. DO NOT give this number to anyone until the test session is about to begin.

You've successfully created an online session. Nothing more need be done until the testing session begins. However, now we can move on to part two: Conducting an online testing session.

To begin, have the candidates open a browser window and direct them to: www.natetesting.com Then have them click on the Candidates link to continue.

The candidate must now click on "Take a NATE Test Online" to continue

You now provide the candidate with your Proctor number and the session ID

After entering both sets of numbers, they click on the Continue to Next Page button.

Here the candidate will select the "Start a new test" link. If they had started a test and been logged off for any reason, such as a computer or power failure, they would select "Continue Interrupted test".

If the candidate has taken a previous exam (either paper or online), instruct them to enter their NATE ID and pin, then click login. If this is their first NATE exam, they can create both numbers here. If they've taken a previous exam but don't remember their ID number, click here. If they have an ID number but no pin, click here. For this demo, we'll assume this is their first exam and create both.

On this page, the candidate enters their personal information. And while only the fields with an asterisk are required, instruct them to enter as much information as possible in the event they need to be contacted by NATE. None of this information is provided to a third party. The pin they choose should be 4-6 numbers. At this point they have been assigned a unique NATE ID number. They MUST write down and REMEMBER both their ID number and their pin.

After entering all their information, the candidate must check this box to authorize NATE to release their scores to a third party, such as an employer. Now they'll click update to create their file and continue.

This page allows them to review the personal information they entered and update it if needed. They'll click on "Add Exam" to continue.

On this page, they can select from among the exams offered. Remember, they must pass a core and specialty exam to be NATE certified.

This page reviews both their personal information and displays the exam choice they've selected. If any errors exist, they click on Re-Register. If not, they click on the "Start Test" link.

If multiple candidates will be taking exams, insure they've all reached this page before continuing. Either read this out loud or allow them time to read it before instructing them to click on the "Start the Exam" link.

On this page, they begin the exam. They'll return to this page when the exam is complete. Whenever the “Completed Section?” field is displayed a "No", it means they have not selected an answer to one or more questions on the exam. Let's click on core service to begin an exam.

Here we see an example question. To view the formula page, they would click on the link. To return to the "My Testing Home Page", they would click on the link. The applicant should carefully read the entire question, click on the answer they feel is most correct, then click on the "Next Question" link. If they want to review this question later, they can check the box. If they dispute the accuracy of a question or want to leave a comment for NATE regarding this specific question, they can click on the link. Let's take a quick look at that page.

This page allows an applicant to provide comments back to NATE on specific questions. Such comments are welcome and are considered vital to the process of improving the exams. All comments are read by the NATE technical review committee.

After completing the exam, the applicant is returned to this page. If one or more questions remain unanswered, NO is displayed. If they want to review all the questions, click on this link. To see only the questions they checked for review click here. Let's look at the question review screen.

This page allows you to review a question. To change an answer, click on the one you consider most correct, then click on the "Change Answer" link. You can then look at previous questions, the next question or click on finished. REMEMBER: If they fail to click on the “Change Answer” link, the answer will not change or be updated.

When all questions have a selected answer, the completed section display changes to YES. You now must check the box indicating the answers are your own, check the box indicating that after clicking "Grade Exam" you cannot go back to review questions and finally click on the "Grade Exam" link.

After clicking grade exam, this page will display your results. A 70 or higher is needed for a passing grade. If you fail the exam, you may take additional exams that day, but must wait 30 days to retake the same exam. At this point, you are finished or you can select "Take Another Exam".

After all applicants have completed their exams, the proctor must again log on to the NATE Testing Site to close out the test session. REMEMBER: Closing the session prevents an applicant from taking additional exams once they've left the testing session.
