Society for Technical Communication Job Description Job Title: Department: Reports to: Supervises: FLSA Status: Staff: Date: SUMMARY The Editor is the chief person responsible for the evaluation and editing of to-be-published content submitted by staff and outside writers for STC’s monthly magazine. S/he is responsible for generating and gathering editorial copy for each issue of Intercom by researching topics, establishing and maintaining contacts in the field, and soliciting articles that will contribute to the success of the magazine. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Editor develops each issue of the magazine in a timely manner by: 1. Developing clear, concise, and factually accurate copy 2. Adhering to prescribed deadlines 3. Developing editorial calendar for Intercom with the assistance of the Editorial Advisory Panel 4. Soliciting articles on a variety of issues central to readers’ professional development 5. Working with authors to refine ideas, outlines, and submissions 6. Editing and evaluating submissions 7. Assigning accepted articles to appropriate issues 8. Creating and revising layout for each issue 9. Routing selected copy for review by appropriate staff 10. Approving proposed illustrations and layouts from designer 11. Developing and maintaining contacts in the target industries 12. Maintaining constant contacts with leadership and members to understand the important issues in technical communication 13. Overseeing editorial aspects of magazine production 14. Overseeing other publications such as e-newsletters News and Notes and Tieline 15. Adhering to budget limits and editorial standards 16. Maintaining a database on articles submitted, used, and copy rejected. Editor Communication Director of Communication and Marketing Assistant Editor Exempt 10 July 2008 Other duties: 1. Ensures all mass communication messages are proofread prior to distribution 2. Supervises Assistant Editor in performance of his/her duties 3. Participates in the writing, editing, or reviewing of Society correspondence, web content, or publications 4.
