              SuperSeries Wheelchair Basketball Launch

Oh man, is Wheelchair Basketball alive and pumping! If you were not down at the Vodacom Mandeville
Indoor Sports Centre this 9th & 10th May 2009, then you missed out on all the action when the
powerhouse’s of the game fought for supremacy in a much contested launch of the 2009 SuperSeries

Herewith a shout out and formal welcome to the newest addition to the SuperSport wheelchair
fraternity, Brian Killian & Brian Farnham from ADCO who are the new sponsors of the Freestate based
franchised team – The ADCO Wildcats.

Producer Sean Everett and his SuperSport Crew set up early on Saturday morning for the TV Broadcast of the launch
of the 2009 SuperSeries as WBSA Marketing Consultant Andy Scott greeted the crowds and welcomed all to the 12th
consecutive year of this amazing SuperSport WBSA partnership, where we have seen the game evolve into a
magnificent spectacle of skilled performances by athletes with disabilities.

The rules of the competition allows an increase of players on the bench from 10 to 12 with certain conditions making
for tactical decisions in that all team members need to have court time. This controversial change forces the team to
have in their squad of 12, two U23 national athletes and realisation resulted in decisions from coaches on when &
how a substitution was crucial to finishing off the game.

Game 1: 09:00 Transnet Rail Engineering Saints vs ADCO Wildcats Level of the Game 7/10
The game tapped off with newcomers ADCO Wildcats challenging the Transnet Rail Engineering Saints and what a
game it turned out to be. Both teams evenly matched, went into the dying seconds of the game on even scores but
the rules of competition impacted on crucial substitution changes that let victory slip away from the Saints in the last
50 seconds of the final quarter.

Coach Burrows and his management need to think carefully of bringing up bench warmers and concentrate of a core
of players that will win the game for them.

Game 2: 11:00 Gestetner Pumas vs DHL Flyers Level of the Game 5/10
2008 National Vodacom Champions and the make up of the Eastern Cape franchised team did little to impress as
they were truly well beaten by a new look Gestetner Pumas. Yes sports fans, we have a team that has truly sent out a
message that they are Gold Cup finalists.

An awesome 1st quarter saw the Pumas take the lead 24 points to 7 and the Flyers could not come back into the
game to lose 79 – 33. Gestetner went all out with a huge supporter’s group yelling encouragement for their team
whilst the Chix with Stix gave the raucous crowd good entertainment value.

Again as seen in the previous game, the DHL Flyers fell into the trap and brought up a full bench and again got
caught up in having bench warmers attempt to play at an intensity that was way beyond their playing capability.
Speaking to the Flyers Coach Mfamana, it was obvious that they have no planning or set goal target per quarter and
were caught off guard with the All Play rule. This trend will be the down fall of a few teams this season.

Game 3: 13:00 AngloGold Ashanti Lions vs Discovery Eagles Level of the Game 8/10
Most convincingly, the Game of the Day! There has never been any love loss between these two former SuperSport
Champions and this encounter was aggressively contested with points scored with every turnover.

Down to the wire, the Eagles kept the Lions from reaching their bonus point by stopping them from scoring the
allusive 65 points but silly mistakes in the last seconds of the final quarter resulted in the Lions winning on turnover
ball to take the game 64 – 61 at the final buzzer.

Saints Coach Burrows clawed his way back to victory as the Flyers dominated in the 1 Quarter to look as though
they were clear winners but Saints veteran player Ralph Williams showed that he still had plenty to give and turned in
an impressive showing to give Flyers their successive loss in two days.

Need I comment that to carry bench warmers for the sake of bringing players to the competition was yet again the
downfall of the DHL Flyers.
