PO Box 127, Rondebosch, 7701 Tel : 021 6742972 Fax : 0866166988 www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za SELECTION CRITERIA 2011 SA JUNIOR TEAM 1. 2011 JUNIOR TEAM MEMBERS As the 2010 SA Champions in their respective divisions, MICHAEL FEBRUARY (U18B), SARAH BAUM (U18G) and DYLAN LIGHTFOOT (U16B) have qualified for the 2011 SAJT. These surfers, who are also the top seeds in their respective divisions of the 2011 SAJT, are not required to surf trials but will be required to attend ALL team camps. 2. 2011 JUNIOR TRIALISTS 2.1. The following surfers have been seeded directly into the FINAL selection trial, based on their 2009 and 2010 results both locally and internationally. The following surfers have been invited to compete in the first selection trial. (TRIAL ONE) U18 BOYS - JEANDRE BLIGNAUT - JEAN DU PLESSIS - LEON DU PREEZ - DANIEL JEGGELS - PAPI MAKANYANE - RIGARD SMIT - ANDREW SMITH - JARRED VELDHUIS - MIKEY VENTER (Top FIVE qualify for the FINAL TRIAL) U18 GIRLS - AMY BOSWORTH - ROXY GILES - NIKITA KEKANA - HEATHER KLUG - CARA MAC DONALD - SABRINA SCOTT - EMMA SMITH - GINA SMITH - JESSICA WILSON (Top SEVEN qualify for the FINAL TRIAL) U16 BOYS - MAX ARMSTRONG - BRANDON BENJAMIN - DANIEL BUITENDAG - JASON (JJ) HARRIS - LINCOLN LOGIE - MARCHALL REANS - WADE SIMKISS - JOSH SMIT - DANE VAN GREUNEN (Top SIX qualify for the FINAL TRIAL) • Trialists are listed in alphabetical order. 2. 3. 2011 JUNIOR TRIALS RULES 3.1. In order to compete in the trials surfers must be 15 years old during the 2011 World Junior Championships. 3.2. Surfers MUST participate in the trials to be considered for selection into the 2011 SA Junior Team. 3.3. TRIAL ONE will be held at a venue in the Cape St Francis area on 4 & 5 December 2010. 3.4. The FINAL TRIAL will be held in the Cape St Francis area on 5 & 6 February 2011. NOTE: Trialists must make their own travel arrangements to Cape St Francis. SSA will assist with transport during the event ( and from PE airport and back) and will arrange accommodation on Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4. Meals are to trialists own account. 3.5. Private coaching of surfers during the trials is not allowed. (Personal coaches may not assist trialists) 3.6. Surfing South Africa’s transformation process will be taken into account when selecting the 2011 SA Junior Team. 3.7. All trialists must hold a South African passport or must show proof that they have applied for a South African passport in order to be selected for the SA Junior Team. (This is an ISA and SASCOC directive). 3.8. The selectors have been given the authority to finalise the fourth surfer in each division. 3.9. The fourth position in each division MAY be allocated to the surfer who comes fourth in the trial or to a transformation surfer who finishes either fifth or sixth who the selectors believe warrants inclusion. 3.10. The selectors have further discretion to include a sick or injured top ranked surfer into the team if they believe the surfer’s inclusion is in the best interests of surfing for SA. 3.11. Trialists who become sick or who suffer an injury immediately prior to the start of either of the trials and who, on medical advice, are not able to participate, may be considered for inclusion into the team under point 18 (above). 3.12. These trialists must produce the relevant medical documentation to the selectors prior to the start of the trial to enable the selectors to make an informed decision. 4. 2011 JUNIOR TRIALS FORMAT 4.1. The format of the trials will be a Round Robin, as this format is regarded as: 4.1.1. Fair to all (all surfers compete against each other in each round). 4.1.2. The trials are a contest between all the invited surfers. 4.1.3. The trials are an objective process where seeding is irrelevant. 4.2. The percentage system will be allocated to heat positions. 4.3. Trialists will be allowed a discard of their lowest percentage. 4.4. If there is a tie for the final place in any of the three divisions, the tied surfers will compete in sudden death surf off. 4.5. The selectors will name a non travelling official team reserve, who may not necessarily be the fifth placed surfer in each division. 3. 5. 2011 JUNIOR TEAM SELECTION 5.1. The 2011 SA Junior Team will be forwarded to the Board by the convener within 5 days of the FINAL trial. 5.2. The Board will ratify and announce the 2011 SA Junior Team within 14 days of the completion of the FINAL trial. 5.3. Once the 2011 SA Junior Team is selected and announced they will be required to sign a commitment document and the SSA Code of Conduct. 5.4. If, prior to the Team departing for WJSC 11, a selected surfer becomes ill or is injured, the convener of selectors will seek an independent medical opinion from an SSA appointed specialist to determine whether the surfer will be able to compete in WJSC 11. 5.5. If, in the opinion of the independent medical specialist, the surfer has not recovered nor be fully fit 30 days prior to the team’s departure, he/she will be replaced by the official reserve. 5.6.
