1: AIMS
The Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship curriculum is designed to assist in the full development
of each individual pupil at Bournemouth Collegiate School. It covers three areas: health education, social and personal
development and citizenship. Overall we aim to:

    • Encourage the development of thoughtful, well-rounded and sociable citizens, who will take their place in the
world aware of the role they can play
    • Develop in our pupils the power to question and argue rationally and the qualities needed for decision making
and leadership, thereby fostering their ability to resolve conflict within their own environment, among friends
        and within the classroom
    • Engender in pupils a sense of responsibility towards themselves, their peers and their surroundings
    • help pupils develop respect for the needs of others, particularly those of
    • different religions and cultures.
    • Provide necessary health education in a manner appropriate to the age and stage of development of the pupils
    • Equip pupils with the organisational and study skills which will enable them to succeed in their work.

2: PSHE SUBJECT AREAS
Health education [HE]
        Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco
Schools have to prepare young people to lead confident, healthy, safe and independent lives. Education about
drugs, alcohol and tobacco is therefore crucial

        Nutrition and Physical Activity
A healthy balance of foods provides the energy and nourishment everyone needs to survive and to enjoy life

        Sex Education
Effective Sex Education (SE) is crucial to developing and maintaining emotional and
physical health. Members from the NHS sexual health team are involved in giving talks to all years.

Personal and social education [PSE]
        Emotional Health and Wellbeing
All pupils should be made aware of the emotional health issues that we all face, and
should be encouraged to support their peers

        Relationship Education
Effective Relationship Education (RE) is crucial to developing and maintaining
        emotional and physical health

        Safety
Pupils should be able to keep themselves safe in the home, at school, while
travelling, at work, in play, in sport and in leisure. Safety education helps them to
        recognise potential risks.

Citizenship[C]
Pupils should learn about socially and morally responsible behaviour through classroom activities and discussion and
through experiences beyond the classroom

        Personal Finance
Both elements of PSHE and Citizenship reflect the fact that education is about helping pupils to develop the
knowledge, skills and understanding they need, including developing financial capability, to live confident,
        independent lives

        Global Awareness
        Multiculturalism and tolerance
Immigration – should this be tightened up?
Rights and responsibilities – the law
Campaigning – how has the internet changed the face of campaigning and pressure groups?
Introduction to basic politics – democracy, parties, elections, voting patterns, role of government, types of
        government, structure of government
        Conflict resolution
Are we all ‘global citizens’? – what does this mean?

        Careers
Pupils will learn predominately about careers in years 10 and 11 (see below work experience). In year 11 all
pupils will meet with the school careers advisor and will discuss personal plans of action and the direction they
wish to take in the following year. At key stage 3 pupils will look at reviewing their current progress within
        School.

Work Experience
All pupils in year 10 do a mandatory week of work experience in March. All pupils are given the opportunity to access
www.learnaboutwork.net/dorset. Pupils select a place of work of their choice from the data base (all placements meet
health and safety regulations). They are given the responsibility of contacting their chosen work place to arrange this
placement. Pupils learn about how to conduct themselves within the work place and what to do in given situations that
they may not have yet encountered.

Police/community input

The local community officer is invited in to give talks to predominately key stage 3 on current community issues,
respecting others and how to treat each other.

3: METHODOLOGY
During all Key Stages, pupils should be taught knowledge, skills and understanding through opportunities to:

    • take responsibility
    • feel positive about themselves
    • participate
    • make real choices and decisions
    • meet and work with people
    • develop relationships
    • consider social and moral dilemmas
    • find information and provide advice
    • prepare for change
All pupils have equal opportunities to learn without disruption or distraction. In some lessons, there is a need for a formal
approach. Where the class is being encouraged to work in groups and to develop organisational, team working and
leadership skills, the more routine rules of the classroom may be relaxed, e.g., one person talking at a time and overall
quietness in the classroom.

4: LINKS WITH OTHER KEY STAGES
There is integration between all the PSHE taught throughout the school. The entire work programme is designed as a
whole to offer a continuum of development, some topics being covered in more detail or with a different emphasis as the
pupils grow older e.g. sex education.

5: PSHE ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
Aspects of PSHE are delivered across the curriculum. A regular programme of visiting speakers is organised by SLT. A large
input will be from the outside community where possible and from the local police links will be organised.

6: POLICY STATEMENTS
Assessment and marking in PSHE

   • All pupils should take as active a part as possible in all PSHE lessons hence the emphasis on effort grading.
   • Target setting is not required in this area of the curriculum.

Differentiation: The level at which pupils choose to involve themselves, to some extent, offers self-imposed
differentiation. The teacher aims to ensure that pupils are encouraged to participate to the level of their ability. They seek
to develop pupils’ aptitudes by helping them to carry out new tasks or become involved in ways which they have not
previously adopted. This may require staff to ensure that some pupils learn to “back off” and observe, allowing others to
“have a go”. The possibilities for all pupils to shine in PSHE activities must be pursued.

Induction of new members of the department: Staff who are responsible for ensuring that any members of staff who are
new to teaching PSHE at Bournemouth Collegiate School, are taken through the Scheme of Work for the classes they are
teaching. This happens at the beginning of every new academic year.

Setting / grouping of pupils: Pupils are taught in Tutor Groups throughout the school and classes/year groups are
sometimes combined.

Equal Opportunities: Many of the topics covered in PSHE provide opportunities to emphasise the importance of equality
in all areas of life, e.g., teaching respect for others, whatever their background. Within the classroom, all teaching staff
ensure that opportunities to play certain roles within activities are shared fairly and equitably among the group.

7: HOMEWORK
Homework is not normally set for PSHE, although pupils are asked to think through issues and are encouraged to research
further by listening to / reading news articles and using other research sources.
8: RESOURCES AND THEIR LOCATION
Each teacher of PSHE has a bank of resources containing the scheme of work. The handbook file also contains lesson
outlines and sample materials for the year specifically for that teacher. All resources are kept in room 71 at the senior
school, fully labelled and available to all staff

Support Staff/Talkers

The school nurse is involved in supporting aspects of the delivery of PSHE throughout the school. In particular, she may be
involved with issues such as sexual development and health, safety first, first aid, addiction and health, but she does not
deliver the programme. Outside speakers are used from time to time, where their specific expertise is relevant. In all
cases, teaching staff presence in and organisation of the lessons remain essential.

9: PSHE AND CITIZENSHIP AT THE PREP SCHOOL
The Prep school follows the ‘Rainbow’ PSHCE and SEAL scheme produced by Dorset County Council, Bournemouth
Borough Council and the Borough of Poole.

Aware of the emotional literacy and social skills deficits many children carry, which potentially hinder educational
progress, the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools and Families)launched the Primary SEAL (Social, Emotional Aspects
of Learning) Strategy as part of the National Primary Strategy in 2005. The SEAL teaching materials are organised into 7
themes: New Beginnings, Getting On and Falling Out, Say No to Bullying, Going for Goals, Good to be Me, Relationships,
Changes.

These are sequenced, progressive and developmental, to be taught from the beginning of the academic year through to
the end of it. Each theme is intended to be introduced to the whole school through a SEAL assembly, then the lessons
taught to every year group from Foundation to Year 6 (Primary SEAL) simultaneously, thus engendering a whole school
approach. Detailed schemes of work are available on request.
