Cooking White Rice Made Easy
Rice is a fantastic staple to go with lots of meals, but if not cooked right it can
completely ruin the delicious meal you have just prepared. So here are some top tips
to create the perfect fluffy white rice to accompany any meal.
1. Preparing the rice
The rice isn't dirty, but it still needs to be washed to remove the excess starch which
is on the surface of the grains. By removing this starch you won't get that stickiness
with the grains stuck together and this will help you achieve the light fluffy rice that
we want to serve.
To wash the rice simply put the amount you wish to cook in a mixing bowl and cover
with water. Using a wooden spoon simply swirl the rice round the bowl, you will see
that the water is turning opaque. When you see the water is white simply drain the
water away and repeat this process one more time to ensure the rice is starch free.
2. Cooking the rice
You need to ensure that there is plenty of water in the pan when cooking your rice,
so make sure that the rice is well covered with cold water before you begin. Add a
pinch of salt to the water as well to really bring out the flavour of the rice, as
although rice is an accompaniment to the meal it can still taste great on its own.
To cook the rice, simply bring it to a boil and then turn down to a low heat to simmer
for 15 minutes. Make sure that you check on the rice every couple of minutes and
stir with a wooden spoon to ensure that none is getting stuck to the bottom of the
pan. Once the rice is cooked, you simply need to drain off the excess water
thoroughly and serve!
