PART-TIME OPTION, REGISTER NOW!

You can now obtain this industry relevant qualification by completing a range of Metro Screen
accredited short courses at your own pace. If you have pre-existing knowledge or industry
experience, you may also be eligible to fast track through Recognition of Prior Learning [RPL].

This practical and convenient option is ideal for those who aren’t able to commit to full time study
due to time or work commitments, and can be achieved by following the steps below.

  1. Register as a part-time Cert IV student by completing an enrolment form and including a
     one-off payment of $450. We will arrange an informal meeting with you to provide important
     information about the Certificate IV in Screen and Media qualification, assist you in selecting
     the best short courses according to your desired skill set, outline the assessment work
     required for each course, and explore the option of RPL. We’ll then combine all of your
     desired courses into a training schedule that you can use as a guide including dates the
     courses are due to run.

  2. Enrol and pay upfront for each short course at your own pace. As you complete each
     course, we add your assessment work to your existing portfolio of assessment. We’ll be
     there to guide you through your training where you can take advantage of Metro Screen’s
     extensive resources and networking opportunities.

  3. Final assessment will take place once you have accumulated the required number of units,
     and you have completed all necessary assignments. Once you have been found competent,
     you will receive your Certificate IV in Screen and Media. You’ll also be our invited to attend
     an official graduation ceremony along with graduates from the full time course.


DATES
You can register as a part-time Certificate IV student at
any time, with meetings arranged by appointment once
registration payment has been received. Registrations
are valid for 18 months. Short course descriptions and

COST
Part-time Certificate IV registration fee is $450, plus the
cost of the Short Courses you choose to complete.

2011 ACCREDITED SHORT COURSES TO CHOOSE FROM
You are required to complete a minimum of 10 units, with an additional three core units to be obtained
through a self paced learning handbook. Skip to the end of this document to see some examples of what
your part-time Certificate IV training schedule could look like.

ANIMATION AND VISUAL EFFECTS

FUNDAMENTALS OF VFX
[Two units: CUFANM301A Create 2D digital animations, CUFANM402A Create digital visual effects]
This comprehensive special effects course is a complete package for the aspiring animator and/or
designer. Students use After Effects, Motion and Photoshop to create stunning 2D and 3D graphics,
experiment with filters, multiple layers, animation and compositing techniques. Completion of the course
will see students with a core understanding of visual effects techniques and practices.

Prerequisites: A basic understanding of Final Cut Pro and use of Mac operating systems is an advantage.

INTRODUCTION TO CLAY ANIMATION
[Two units: BSBDES402A Interpret and respond to a design brief, CUFPPM404A Create storyboards]
This course is the perfect introduction to stop motion and clay animation. Participants learn how to design a
character, create a short animation storyboard, build a wire armature and how to sculpt their character out of
clay. Students also gain experience with setting up a digital still camera, computer and lights to shoot stop-
motion animation. Using After Effects software students assemble their frames into a short animated
sequence and finally export their animations to DVD.

3D MODELLING WITH MAYA
[Two units: CUFANM302A Create 3D digital animations, CUFANM303A Create 3D digital models]
Autodesk Maya is one of the most widely used programs in the 3D Animation, visual effects and broadcast
industries. Beginners, or those moving to Maya from a traditional animation background, will explore Maya's
3D modelling, texturing, lighting and animation tools and cover essential CG techniques in this production-
focused course.

CAMERA & SOUND

CAMERA ESSENTIALS
[One unit: CUFCAM201A Assist with a basic camera shoot ]
Camera Essentials is the perfect introduction to camera operating and cinematography techniques. In this
hands-on practical course, participants learn High Definition camera operating and lighting skills. Topics
covered include framing, exposure, white balance as well as handling techniques, lighting set up and lay
out and an overview of shooting formats. In order to maximize hands-on experience the course is limited to
12 places.

CAMERA & LIGHTING TECHNIQUES

This course covers intermediate camera operation and techniques of cinematography. Participants will
perform a number of practical exercises during this hands-on course learning skills relating to studio and
location lighting, scene coverage, framing and camera movement. Delve into the role of a cinematographer,
and gain a comprehensive knowledge in all areas of camera functionality, advanced lighting techniques,
special effects and creating a style that’s right for your production.

SOUND DESIGN AND EDITING

This program explores the art of screen sound design and introduces the practical skills required to record
sound. Participants design a complete soundscape for an existing film excerpt and complete practical
exercises recording sound in a variety of locations, whilst troubleshooting common problems.

DIRECTING

THE CRAFT OF DIRECTING
[One unit: BSBCRT402A Collaborate in a creative process]
Craft of Directing focuses on the visual aspects of directing drama, exploring script interpretation,
visualisation, shot choices, pacing, and point of view. Participants discover how camera angles, aspect
ratio, shot sequence and staging all effect the power of a story. The course covers the analysis of a wide
range of scripts and films to discover how best to use the language of film to tell a powerful story. Learn
how to think visually and enrich your mise-en-scène.

THE 1ST AD AND CONTINUITY
[One unit: BSBWOR402A Promote team effectiveness]
Develop effective skills in breaking down scripts, scheduling and on set communication and protocols.
Understand how to monitor continuity and fill out continuity documentation and scripts. Participants complete
a range of practical exercises and take part in simulated shoots rotating through key roles. This course
prepares participants to fulfil the crucial roles of 1st AD and Continuity.

DOCUMENTARY MAKING INTENSIVE

A comprehensive hands on experience giving you an insightful overview of the documentary making
process. Participants learn technical and creative skills as they work together to produce a documentary,
starting with the initial concept, script development, to shooting, lighting and finally editing using Final Cut
Pro. The Documentary Making Intensive course enables students to take an idea from concept through to
production gaining a solid knowledge of the processes involved.

This course allows students to acquire a range of specialised skills required to shoot, edit and display video

Apple Certified trainer and covers the first half of Apple’s Final Cut Pro 101 training syllabus.

and is designed for those with a good basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro 7 or higher. Participant’s cover
advanced editing functions, including titles and graphics, audio mixing, motion tools, multi-camera editing,
filters, colour correction, grading, and outputting formats.

Students are expected to have a copy of an Apple FCP 7 textbook, available through Metro Screen.

ANIMATION AND VISUAL EFFECTS

INTRODUCTION TO AFTER EFFECTS
A valuable introduction to Adobe’s After Effects program for those who wish to enhance existing footage with
visual effects. Explore the fundamentals of compositing, key framing, rotoscoping, blending, masks and
animation. The course also covers text, graphics, filters, working with Photoshop and Illustrator, colour
correction, camera movement, adjusting key frames, complex compositions, transitioning from 2D to 3D
imaging and animating to music.

CINEMA PROJECTION

CINEMA PROJECTION

This course offers participants a rare opportunity to gain comprehensive training in cinema projection. Learn
how to receive, assemble, test and screen film. Acquire an excellent understanding of cinema projection and
be prepared to seek employment in the industry. Participants will have access to the Chauvel Cinema and to
a number of different projectors for hands-on experience with a range of formats including 16mm, 35mm and
digital. Gain the essential skills of making up and breaking down film, equipment maintenance and
troubleshooting. By the end of the course they will be trained to prepare and screen films that form part of a
working cinema’s program.
