SUMMER CONNECTIONS by Ty-Kea Witten What a terrific summer for Kinship Families at Fairhill! Grandparents asked for programming for teens that “connects” one end of the summer to the other. These older adults raising children for the second (and third for some) time, show us every day how to be effective partners in raising the next generation of our community’s leaders. And the team at Fairhill listens. Teen leadership week in May, ropes courses in June, two successful weeks of summer camp, a photography documentary course, and a mini business marketing opportunity in August - teens in continued on page 6 SMILES ALL AROUND by Karen McKeehan
They came, they saw, they painted, weeded, planted, and even redesigned the website. Thanks to volunteers from Forest City and Lubrizol, Fairhill Center has many new looks. About 100 volunteers from Forest City braved threatening weather on June 3 to upgrade and maintain Fairhill Center as part of the company ‘s 2008 Community Day. Volunteers arrived in buses around 10 a.m., and were met by team leaders from continued on page 8

Certified Master Trainers Stacey Rokoff and Lillian Levine are looking for people who want to help others regain quality of life by working on balance issues. They will train you on being a MATTER OF BALANCE COACH. Stacey and Lillian also are looking for people who have experienced chronic disease, either personally or through caring for a loved one, to train to be a CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT COACH. If you’re organized, outgoing, dependable and think either of these positions are right for you, please contact Stacey at 216421-1350 for more information. For general information on the classes see page 5.
After a career in international marketing and sales for Lubrizol, managing a summer camp for decades, and doing a stint as a Huntington Learning Center owner, Jim Wallace was looking for new challenges. In 1994, he began his adventure with Fairhill. From scraping paint in the townhouses to reengineering the organization as Chairman of the Board, Jim Wallace advances and demonstrates successful aging every day. In 1998, Jim and CEO Stephanie FallCreek wrote a grant to the Cleveland Foundation to establish Fairhill’s Senior Computer Learning Center (CLC). It began with four computers, one basic course, a few volunteer instructors – and 200 people on the waiting list. Today, with a part-time paid staff person and 40+ unpaid staff, the CLC annually serves 400+ older adults. Continuing his lifelong learning habit, Jim is teaching himself to use Fairhill’s accounting software, so he can develop user-friendly management tools to support Fairhill’s Director of Successful Aging Programs, Stacey Rokoff. “Jim has been a partner, conscience, and inspiration – since the day he arrived. I am honored that he has chosen to be an integral part of our team for so many years, “ says Dr. Stephanie FallCreek. Jim will be recognized with the first Fairhill Lifelong Learner award at the “It’s a Learning Affair” benefit on Sept. 20, 2008.
Adults 60 and better can enjoy discounts, food, and conversation on Wednesdays at various businesses around Shaker Square. Dave’s Supermarket, Shaker Square Supermarket, Balaton, Sasa, Dodd Camera, and Dewey’s Coffee are the current participants. Fairhill Center has a table at Senior Wednesdays. SUMMER CONNECTIONS continued from page 1 kinship families were very involved at Fairhill Center this summer. A week of leadership training had them experiencing and practicing teamwork, enthusiasm, focus, accountability, and taking action. Then they put these skills to the test and applied for paid positions as teen camp counselors here at Fairhill. The Kin Kids Camp on the Hill gave teens a chance to interact with younger children in kinship families and utilize their leadership skills. During the summer, teens also volunteered at a Wheel Art event presented by The Arts Studio (one of the organizations that makes a home on the Fairhill campus) and designed totebags and t-
6.
shirts imprinted with wheelchair wheels to be sold to support the national American Art Therapy Conference happening in Cleveland in November. Finally, in August, teens designed the marketing effort for the Fairhill rummage sale - helping with the organizing and retailing of the rummage sale. In a class at the Computer Learning Center they designed and printed flyers to advertise the event to the community. No matter where these teens were this summer, they had cameras too. The “What’s A Family” exhibit at Tower City from September 13 20 tells the story of teens growing up in families led by grandparents. For more on Kinship Services at Fairhill, see page 9.

Ty-Kea Witten Ties it Together
In 1990 Ty-Kea Witten was 9 months old when she moved in with her grandparents. They remember her first words, first steps and taking her to Fairhill for Kinship Support sessions. Ty-Kea is now the full-time Successful Aging Associate. Working on outreach projects or the Campaign for Kinship Village (see page 9), she often thinks “that could be my
grandfather or grandmother” and acts with care and respect. She says: “It’s an honor to go from everybody helping me to showing everybody that I can help others.” To read more about Kinship services available at Fairhill for older adults, children and teens see page 9. Fairhill. This was the fourth year for Forest City; they have previously renovated the stables and created an outdoor theatre among other tasks; this year they repainted interior and exterior sites, hauled away heaps of scrap and created a basketball court. On June 18, a group of volunteers from Lubrizol arrived at Fairhill as part of the company’s “Building Bonds” program. The program brings employees from Lubrizol’s five different locations together to build ties with each other and with the community. Volunteers completed several outdoor and indoor refurbishing tasks, as well as getting out several bulk mailings. Lubrizol volunteers from the communications area sat with the marketing staff at Fairhill and programmed a new look for the website.
A Forest City volunteer in her third year at Fairhill led an exterior paint crew and made all the curbs visible. “I thought the yellow paint would be too bright, but it’s not,” she said. “We can get a lot done in a day. I love to come back here.” A second year Forest City volunteer said, “It’s always good to be here. There’s a lot to do.” Volunteers from Lubrizol handled mundane tasks (window washing, vacuuming and dusting!) with good humor and a can-do attitude. As one said, “Just give me a rope and I’m good to go!” Fairhill Center president Stephanie FallCreek said, “Sometimes the transformation isn’t evident until people leave. It seems chaotic while they’re working. But when these two teams left – everyone on the Fairhill campus was smiling.”

The Cleveland Foundation and The Treumart Fund (a supporting organization of the Cleveland Foundation and The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland) and contracts with both the Shaker Area Development Corporation and the Buckeye Development Corporation. Support also provided by The Older Americans Act Caregiver Support Program Grant from the Ohio Dept. of Aging through Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging.
The Campaign for Kinship Village is working to create 29 residences at Fairhill for kinship care families (grandparents raising grandchildren), older adult volunteers and campus employees. This “live/serve/work” model makes creative use of historic un-renovated buildings, utilizes existing value-added programming, and preserves the green space of the campus.
