Preface
SUBJECT This manual provides the information necessary to administer NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X. It is assumed that the reader will already have a good knowledge of UNIX and of the Bull DP/X series servers, and of the operation of LANs. The NBAdmin utility, used for many of the operations described in the manual, can be run either on a terminal connected to the server under UNIX (in either Command line mode or on an X terminal), or on a PC connected to the server via NetBIOS. The PC version runs under Windows. The other utilities run on a PC Workstation under Windows.
ABOUT THIS MANUAL Section 1 This section gives a brief overview of NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X Administration tools.. The installation both on the DPX/20 server and on the PC workstations is described in this section. The administration tool NBAdmin is described in this section.

11. Overview
1.1
INTRODUCTION NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X is the version of multi-protocol NetBIOS designed to run under the BOS/X operating system (Bull's version of UNIX) on a Bull DPX/20 server. A full introduction can be found in the manual NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X Installation and Setup where the architecture, the NetBIOS/X common interface, transport protocols and NetBIOS protocols are explained. NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X Administration contains a number of additional elements enabling you to administer you NetBIOS network(s) more efficiently. After installing the Administration tools both on the DPX/20 server and on any workstations, the following software modules will be available: OTSign (DOS and Windows versions) DADminWk NBAdmSet NBAdmCfg NBAdmin OTStatus OTInventory
The purpose of each of these is now described.

SOFTWARE MODULES
1.2.1
OTSign OTSign is used to enable the various machines connected via the network(s) to ensure that the information (hardware and software characteristics) on the servers about them is kept up to date. There are two versions, one which runs under DOS and the other under Windows.
1.2.1.1
DOS Version This should be called twice from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the PC (once at the beginning of the file using the option /C and then after the installation of all the networks) in order to identify the networks installed on the workstation.
1.2.1.2
Windows Version The Windows signature is run each time Windows is loaded. Since it is run as a background task the user may not even notice that it is being run (an icon is displayed). No messages are displayed except exceptionally if there is no active NetBIOS, if no DOS signature has already been run at the start of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file with the /C option, or if there is a network error. Unlike the DOS signature, the Windows signature requests information every 3 minutes until it has received a correct response. If not all the replies have been received after 10 attempts, the signature is terminated with the information that is available.

Overview
1.2.2
DAdminWk This daemon runs on the DPX/20 and manages the software and hardware characteristics of this type of machine (frame characteristics, etc.). This daemon replies to requests from OTStatus and OTInventory as well as to the NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X SNMP Agent. There is one such daemon for each NetBIOS protocol. Each daemon can be Directory, Backup or Agent.
1.2.3
NBAdmSet and NBAdmCfg NbAdmSet runs on the workstations (called by OTSoft or IPF after the NBAdmin item has been chosen) where the Administration tools are to be installed and performs the downloading of the administration tools from the server to the workstation. It also enables you to configure the workstation. NBAdmCfg can be used later to modify the configuration set by NBAdmSet.
1.2.4
NBAdmin This program enables you to administer NetBIOS on the server. There are three versions which run under Windows (on a workstation), under UNIX in character mode (on the server) or under XMotif (also on the server). It enables you to view the server's NetBIOS configuration, its NetBIOS statistics, its status in connected and connectionless modes, its NetBIOS audit, and you can use it to manage the internet addresses of machines using the TCP/IP transport protocol.

OTStatus OTStatus is a Windows application which can be run on PC workstations. It displays the status of the network(s) at any one time and allows you to see all active servers, a description of each server, a list of all workstations connected to each server,a description of each workstation and all NetBIOS applications which are active on each workstation.
1.2.6
OTInventory This is another Windows application running on PC workstations and giving the same type of information as OTStatus. However, it gives information on those servers and workstations which have been configured to use the network and which may or may not be using it at the precise moment in time.

DIRECTORY SERVERS
1.3.1
Introduction In order to enable you to view the characteristics of the network there are two utilities which are available under Windows: OTStatus and OTInventory. OTInventory is able to provide you with a list of all the machines (either active or not) on the network whereas OTStatus gives you details of the current state of the network. Both of these utilities use a server which has been designated the Directory Server during the installation phase of the network.
1.3.2
The Directory Server The Directory server is a server running on the network which keeps a record of the configuration of the network as well as continuously monitoring actions performed on the network. The rôle of the Directory server is: to record the hardware and software characteristics of all the servers and workstations (their signature). to keep an up-to-date list of all the active servers on a NetBIOS/X LAN. to provide information for the OTStatus and OTInventory applications.

NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X - Administration Guide There must be one and only one Directory server on the network for each NetBIOS protocol at any one time. Although NetBIOS/X, OpenTeam 1.1 and 1.0 servers can run together on the same network, only NetBIOS/X and OpenTeam 1.1 servers can operate as Directory servers. Since any particular server cannot be guarantied to be available on the network all the time (server or communications failure, shutdown to enable maintenance, etc...), it is necessary to have a mechanism to determine which server is the Directory at a particular moment in time. The "rules" which OpenTeam applies are the following: The first NetBIOS/X or OpenTeam V1.1 server to be run up on the network becomes the Directory. If the current Directory does not have the right "Directory" (server rights are assigned during the installation of a server see the section Installation and Configuration), the next server to be run up having this right becomes the Directory. If the current Directory becomes unavailable (disconnected, broken down or shutdown) then the current "Backup" server (see following) becomes the Directory server. In the event of there being no backup server, then an Agent server will eventually become the Directory. This can take a long time since it is necessary for the new Directory to wait until it has detected all the servers that are active on the LAN. Do not forget that only NetBIOS/X and OT 1.1 servers can become the Directory server. When two OpenTeam networks are joined there will be two Directory servers. The one that has been Directory for the longest time becomes Directory for the combined network. The other one becomes a backup server.

Overview
1.3.3
Back-up servers As stated above, it is clearly possible for the Directory server to develop a fault, or to be shut down for some reason or other. The Directory service is kept available by transferring the Directory function to another server. For this to operate smoothly the new server must have an up-to-date copy of the Directory. There must also be some mechanism to allow the new server to take up its new rôle. This is done by the declaration of a number of Back-up servers. Each server: performs all the tasks of the main Directory server. watches the Directory server and is able to take over if the current Directory server becomes unavailable for any reason. Backup servers are "created" by the current Directory server. Only NetBIOS/X and OT 1.1 servers can become backup servers and the Directory server will try to maintain a certain percentage of servers as backup (10% by default).
1.3.4
Agent Servers All those servers which are neither Directory or Backup servers are called Agent servers. Since OpenTeam 1.0 servers cannot become Directory or Backup servers they are all Agent servers.

1.3.5
General Operation The Directory server scans the OT 1.0 servers periodically to find out which ones are currently running. The NetBIOS/X and OT 1.1 servers send a message periodically to the directory server if they are running. All servers (except OT 1.0) create databases in which all the server and workstation signatures are stored. These are used for OTInventory and OTStatus. For these signatures to be complete: For servers: All the fields in the Installation procedure must have been filled in. or
For workstations: All the responses from NBAdmSet NBAdmCfg must have been filled in. NOTES:
1. If there is only one server on a LAN then it must be the Directory server. 2. When two separate LANs are joined, only one of the Directory servers remains Directory. It updates its Directory with the records of the other. 3. The Directory server records OpenTeam 1.0 workstation signatures and manages OpenTeam 1.0 servers as well as those for NetBIOS/X and OpenTeam 1.1. OTStatus and OTInventory can therefore display servers and workstations from all three versions.

1.3.6
Disable Option This option is set during the installation phase of the NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X Administration package on the UNIX server during the selection of options for server type (Directory, Backup, Agent or Disable). If you choose the Disable option, the administration daemon will be inhibited. This can be useful in the following cases: - there is a filtering bridge on the ethernet network and if this bridge passes ethernet frames in only one direction, all the daemons on either side of the bridge must be inhibited. - you want to make a machine on the network invisible to the administration tools.
1.3.7
Server filtering The filtering of servers is performed by the Directory server. In order for this filtering to be both efficient and real, it must also be done by all the servers which could become the Directory. This filtering serves to produce a list of UNIX machines which are to be made invisible. In order to apply the filters, you must add the following line as many times as necessary to the file: /usr/local/bin/dadmin.cnf HOST_FILTER
where: name is the name of the UNIX machine to be made invisible as defined in the file: /etc/hosts

ON A WORKSTATION In order to install NetBIOS Administration Tools on a PC workstation, IPF must first have been installed. See NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X - IPF User Guide. During the installation you will have to decide between making the workstation Administrable or Supervisor. As an Administrable workstation, your PC will be able to sign on to the network (using OTSign or/and OTSignW) and then to modify the workstation parameters using NBAdmCfg. If you opt to make your workstation a supervisor, you will additionally be able to use the administration tools NBAdmin, OTStatus and OTInventory. This option is intended to be used only by the network administrator and you will probably only want to install it on one or two workstations. 1. If you are not running LAN Manager, verify that the redirector is running. See NetBIOS 2.0 for BOS/X IPF User Guide for more information. From the Windows Program Manager, double-click on the OTSoft program icon. Select the server on which you have installed the Administration tools and click on OK. Select NBAdmin. The title screen window appears, followed by the Welcome screen. 5. Choose Continue (unless you want to cancel the installation (Exit) or to view the help screen (Help)).

STARTING OTSTATUS You can start OTStatus either by starting Windows (type WIN) and then clicking twice on the OTStatus icon in the OpenTeam Program group or by typing WIN OTSTATUS from the DOS prompt. The main OTStatus screen is displayed.
5.3
SELECTING A SERVER When you start OTStatus, servers currently on the workstation's active NetBIOS protocol(s) are displayed in a window. There are two ways in which they can be displayed: either as icons (by default) or in the form of a list. You can change from one display to the other by selecting View from the main menu bar and then either by Icon or by List. If you choose by Icon the window contains an icon (a picture of a server with its name underneath) for each server. If you choose by List the window contains a list of the servers with the name, type (eg DPX/20 620), internet address and board address of each server. To select a server click on the icon or item in the list corresponding to the server required. If you have a large number of servers on the network, it is sometimes easier to select the server by using the Go to command. Select View from the main menu bar. Then select Go to server. The dialog box which appears asks you to type the initial letter(s) of the name of the server that you wish to select. Enter as many letters as you like and click on OK. The server corresponding to those letters will be selected.

66. OTInventory
6.1
INTRODUCTION OTInventory is a Windows application which runs on OpenTeam DOS workstations. It displays a list of machines installed and signed on the OpenTeam network. The list may be a full list, or it may be a partial list using criteria specified either for a particular immediate need, or for regular use, using a pre-defined model. Each network element is defined as follows: Name within network (locally defined) Type (Hardware) Physical location or Organizational unit (such as division or department) The information displayed by OTInventory comes from a server called "directory". It is therefore a static view of the network and gives details of the elements that have been defined to be able to use the network rather than showing the current status of the network. For a dynamic view of the network you should use OTStatus (see the section "OTStatus"). To display the Organizational unit, select the View command and then Organizational display. In this way, the Location information which is displayed by default is replaced by the Organizational information. To return to the Location information, select View followed by Location display.3

STARTING OTINVENTORY You can start OTInventory either by starting Windows (type WIN) and then clicking twice on the OTInventory icon in the OpenTeam Program group or by typing WIN OTINV from the DOS prompt. If you have more than one NetBIOS protocol installed on your PC, you will be asked to select for which one you want the inventory to be drawn up. You will be able to change this later if you then want to draw up an inventory for another NetBIOS protocol. You may, however, only choose one protocol at a time. The main OTInventory screen is now displayed.
6.3
VIEWING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SERVER There are a number of different screens that you can consult giving information on the applications installed, the boards, the processors, the streamers/tapes, the diskette drives, the hard disks and the printers installed on the server as well as a screen giving a summary of all the above.. 1. Select a server by clicking once on the corresponding name from the list. Select View from the main menu bar. Select Characteristics server from the pull-down menu which appears. The menu which then appears allows you to choose the screen that you wish to consult. Select the one which corresponds to your choice.

COPYING INFORMATION TO A FILE You can use the Copy To File command if you want to copy information from the inventory into a file for use with another application (a word processor, for example), so that you can then add information or enhance the presentation. Specify the target file name by typing it in directly or by selecting it from file and directory lists. OTInventory will add the extension .INF. If the file is to be used with a non-Windows application, you should select the option Use With Non-Windows Applications box. The information copied can be partial (without characteristics) or long (with all characteristics for each computer). If you are using a profile, only those machines contained in the profile will be recorded. Both partial and long files are preceded by a short header giving the date, the number of machines, the number of servers and the number of workstations, as well as the name of the profile if one has been used.
