1.    General description

The “COMPACT” AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR is a compact electronic control unit with
reduced dimensions created for running single-compressor heat pumps and chillers.
The “COMPACT” AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR can be connected by means of an optional
electronic circuit board to a computer for complete remote management, monitoring and
maintenance of the systems, through the unit’s supervision and teleservice functions.
The “COMPACT” AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR is equipped with memory for the SUMMER-
WINTER ON-OFF functions as well as all memorised parameters, which continues to operate
even without mains power. When the machine is switched on, this memory unit ensures that
conditions prior to switch-off are available.
The “COMPACT” AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR can be used in the following units:

2.    Preliminary guidelines

All of the functions in the “COMPACT” AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR are contained in a single
unit having the dimensions of a normal thermostat.

      2.1.          User interface

The interface gives user access to machine data. The three-figure display normally shows the
temperature measured by regulation probe B1 (that is, the water temperature at evaporator
inlet). Information regarding machine status is provided by the four LEDs on the display:

An optional remote control unit can be used for rapid programming of the conditioning unit.
An internal buzzer (which can be disabled using a microswitch or parameter setting) signals
any machine operating malfunctions.

3.         Keypad

The keypad is used to set machine operating parameters.

The following section explains the functions of each key.

         3.1.          Procedures for access to set point and to main machine operating
                       parameters (DIRECT parameters) .




Pressing SEL for more than 5 seconds permits display of the summer and winter set point, as
well as the main machine control parameters called DIRECT parameters; the display will show
the code of the first available DIRECT parameter, that is the summer set point.
Press   or    to scroll all DIRECT parameters.
Press SEL once again to display the setting of the selected DIRECT parameter, which can be
modified using the       and    keys.
Press PRG to save the changed parameter setting and exit from the procedure. Press SEL to
return to the DIRECT parameter selection menu.
During the parameter setting phase, if no keypad operation is attempted for several seconds,
the display will start flashing. If no key is pressed for 60 seconds, the procedure will return to
the normal operating mode without saving any of the parameters that may have been
changed.

       3.2.            Procedures for access to user parameters (USER parameters).




Pressing PRG for more than 5 seconds gives access to the menu of USER parameter settings,
that is the machine’s “working” parameters. This level is protected by a code (password) to
prevent access by non-authorised persons.
Entering the password: Display shows “0”; use keys      and      to enter the password, then
press SEL for access to the USER level.
During the password entry phase, if no key is pressed on the keypad for several seconds, the
display starts flashing.
Selecting USER parameters: The display shows the first available USER parameter. Press keys
   and        to scroll all the USER parameters. Press SEL to display the setting of the selected
USER parameter, which can be modified if desired using keys         and

Press PRG to save changes and exit from the procedure. Press SEL to return to the USER
parameter selection menu.
During the parameter setting phase, the display will start flashing if no key is pressed for
several seconds. If no key is pressed within 60 seconds of procedure activation, the normal
operating mode is restored without saving any of the parameter settings which may have
been changed.

      3.3.          Procedure for access to manufacturer parameters (FACTORY parameters)




Pressing PRG and SEL for more than 5 seconds gives access to the FACTORY parameter
setting menu; these are the machine set-up parameters. This level is protected by a code
(password) which is different than the USER password, to allow assigned personnel only to
have access to this data.
Entering the password: The display shows “0”; use keys     and     to enter the password,
then press SEL for access to the FACTORY level.
During the password entry phase, the display will begin flashing if no key is pressed for
several seconds.
Selecting FACTORY parameters: The code of the first parameter appears on display. Press
or    to scroll all parameters.
Press SEL to display the setting of the selected FACTORY parameter, which can be changed if
desired using keys     and .
Press PRG to save changes and exit from the procedure. Press SEL to return to the FACTORY
parameter selection menu.
During the parameter setting phase, the display will start flashing if no key is pressed for
several seconds.
If no key is pressed within 60 seconds of procedure activation, the normal operating mode is
restored without saving any of the changes made to parameters.

      3.4.          Switching off the BUZZER

Press the MUTE key to disable the buzzer, if previously activated.

       3.5.          Clearing ALARMS




Pressing both  and     keys simultaneously for five seconds will delete all existing alarms
from memory (manual reset), disactivating the alarm message on display as well as the alarm
relay.

       3.6.          Activating the forced defrost CYCLE




Pressing SEL and     for more than 5 seconds activates a forced defrost cycle (if temperature
values of the external heat exchanger are such to permit defrosting; that is, below the end-of-
defrosting threshold).

       3.7.          Enabling/disabling COOLING / ON-OFF unit (Summer mode)

Pressing     for more than five seconds enables or disables the Summer operation mode. It is
not possible to go directly from the Winter mode to the Summer mode. If the machine is on
the Winter mode, pressing this key will have no effect.

      3.8.           Enabling/disabling COOLING / ON-OFF unit (Winter mode)




Pressing    for more than five seconds will enable or disable the winter operation mode. It is
not possible to go directly from the Summer mode to the Winter mode. If the machine is on
the Summer mode, pressing this key will have no effect; the Summer mode must be disabled
first.

      3.9            Switching off the machine (stand by mode)

The machine is switched off when both the Summer and the Winter modes have been
disabled.

      3.10.          Resetting counters

When the compressor function hour-counter (parameter c9) is displayed, pressing                    and
allows immediate resetting. The compressor maintenance count is thus interrupted.

      3.11.          Summary of key functions

4.    List of parameters

The “COMPACT AIRBLUE MICROPROCESSOR parameters have been classified into three
groups:

DIRECT (D):
directly accessible without a password
USER (U):
accessible using password
FACTORY (F):
accessible using factory-level password

WARNING: to modify the USER and FACTORY parameters, the password must be requested
from AIRBLUE. Only qualified personnel can make such modifications without risking
malfunctioning or breakage.
The warranty is immediately invalidated if these parameters are modified arbitrarily without
manufacturer authorisation.

The following list reports the parameter settings of the machine as it is supplied by the
factory, divided into its various units.
These parameters are memorised by means of a personalised hardware key, and are checked
during the machine testing phases.

        5.0.         Passwords

USER:
For access to the USER type parameters, press the PRG key for 5 seconds, enter the password
USER and press the SEL key.
FACTORY:
For access to the Factory type parameters, press the PRG and SEL keys together for 5 seconds,
enter the password FACTORY and press the SEL key.

        5.1.         Probe presetting (“/” parameters)

/3:    Type of condensation probe B3
Indicates the operating mode of the analog input relative to the condenser probe which
controls defrosting and the fans. These probes may not be included at all, or they may be
NTC type probes. The software setting must correspond to adequate hardware. If the

signalled. The 0 setting disables this function.

cC: Pump hour counter
Displays the number of hours the service water circulation pump has been running. Pressing
keys    and     simultaneously when the counter value is on display will reset the counter.

       5.4.            Fan activity (“F” parameters)

F1: Fan output

This selection requires installation of the optional fan control boards (On/Off or speed

board, it is best to set this parameter to zero (FC = 0).

F4: Maximum voltage threshold for Triac
In order to regulate fan speed, an optional phase-cutting board (equipped with triac) must be
installed. In this case, it is necessary to specify the voltage delivered by the triac to the electric
fan motor corresponding to maximum speed. The set value does not correspond to the

Sets the temperature above which the fans continue running at maximum speed. In the case

The fans are switched on 1°C above the switch-off setting, if NTC temperature probes for
condensation control (B3) are being used.

FA: Winter-mode fan switch-off temperature (heating)
If a fan speed regulator is being used, this setting represents the temperature above which
the fans remain off.
The fans are switched on 1°C below the switch-off setting, if NTC temperature probes for
condensation control (B3) are being used.

Fb: Fan acceleration time
Sets the length of time at which the fans must be kept running at maximum speed in order to
overcome the mechanical inertia of the motor. If set at 0, this function is disabled, that is, the
fans are activated at minimum speed and then regulated on the basis of condensation
temperature. The same timing is applied when the compressor is switched on as well (regardless
of condenser temperature), if NTC condensation-control probes have been selected and if speed
regulation has been enabled (F2=3). This serves to safeguard against the effects of a sudden
increase in pressure (which may not necessarily correspond to an equal rise in temperature in the
area where the probe is located) as well as to improve regulation.

Fc:    Triac pulse length
Sets the duration in milliseconds of the pulse applied to the triac. For inductive motors, set
the parameter to 2 (default), for capacitive motors, set the parameter to 0.

       5.5.          Defrosting (“d” parameters)

d1: Defrost check
For units FREEZY HP / MU LC HP / MU ST LC HP / MU PF LC HP establishes whether a
defrosting check should be done on the external heat exchanger (evaporator in winter mode).
For units MU HP / MU ST HP / MU PF HP enables defrost checking of the chilling water in the
external heat exchanger (evaporator in winter mode).

d2: Time or temperature defrost
Establishes whether defrosting should be done on the basis of time (fixed defrosting interval)
or of temperature (defrosting ends as soon as the condensation probe reaches the end
threshold, or if it detects the end-defrost contact open if P8 or P9 are set to 4).

d3: Defrost start temperature
For units FREEZY HP / MU LC HP / MU ST LC HP / MU PF LC HP, sets the temperature below
which a defrosting cycle will be begun. To start up the defrost cycle, the condition must
persist for d5 time. For units MU HP / MU ST HP / MU PF HP this setting defines the point of
intervention for the antifreeze alarm for the external heat exchanger chilling water
(evaporator in winter mode, on probe B3).
d4: Defrost end temperature
Sets the temperature above which the defrost cycle will end.
In units FREEZY HP / MU LC HP / MU ST LC HP / MU PF LC HP this parameter is not used.

d5: Minimum start-defrost interval
Sets the amount of time that temperature can remain below the d3 start-defrost cycle
threshold, as long as the compressor is switched on as well, before a defrost cycle is

d8: Interval between two defrost start-ups
This setting represents the minimum lag between two consecutive defrosting cycles.

db: Antifreeze resistances in defrost cycle
This parameter establishes whether, during defrosting, the antifreeze/back-up resistances
must be activated to limit the flow of cold water in the environment. The significance of the
parameter is as follows:

dc: Time lag before defrosting
When conditions are such that defrosting is enabled, before the cycle is actually activated, the
machine stops the compressor for a given amount of time: dc (set from 0 to 3 minutes).
Shutdown of the compressor enables rotation of the 4-way valves, after an amount of time
defined as dc/2; this lag permits the pressure to be equalised before the defrosting cycle
begins. Using this procedure, the protective compressor timing sequence is not applied,
leading to immediate shut-down of the compressor, as well as relative restarting. If dc=0, the
compressor is not shut down and the cycle inversion valve is rotated immediately.

dd: Time lag after defrosting
At the end of the defrosting cycle, the machine stops the compressor for a given amount of
time: dd (set from 0 to 3 minutes). Shut down of the compressor enables rotation of the 4-
way valves, after an amount of time defined as dd/2; this lag permits pressure to be equalised
and allows any water to drip off the external coil. Using this procedure, the protective
compressor timing sequence is not applied, leading to immediate shut-down of the
compressor, as well as relative restarting. If dd = 0, the compressor is not shut down and the

       5.6.           Antifreeze (“A” parameters)

A1: Antifreeze alarm set point
This setting represents the water temperature at evaporator outlet below which the
machine’s antifreeze alarm is set off. The alarm condition shuts down the compressor while
the pump remains active. Resetting is manual, and can only take place when the water
temperature rises within the operating limits (that is, when it exceeds value A1+A2).

A2: Antifreeze alarm differential
Sets the antifreeze alarm differential; the alarm condition cannot be cancelled until the
temperature rises above the set point value + differential (A1+A2).

A3: Antifreeze alarm by-pass time for machine switch-on in winter mode
If the machine is in an antifreeze alarm condition, this setting allows the machine to be
switched on again for the set time (only when running on the winter mode, since the
machine will heat the water). If the alarm persists after this time has expired, the machine
shuts down again.

A4: Antifreeze resistance activation set point
Sets the threshold below which the antifreeze resistances are switched on. The antifreeze
resistance switch-on function is active even when the machine is on stand-by.

A5: Antifreeze resistance differential
Differential for activating and disactivating the antifreeze resistances.

A6: Back-up resistance probe
Determines which probe is to be used (B1 or B2) to check the back-up resistances. If A6=0,
the selected probe is B1, while of A6=1, the selected probe is B2.

A7: Antifreeze alarm setting limit
Determines the minimum limit which can be used for setting the antifreeze alarm (A1).

A8: Back-up resistance heating setting
Sets the threshold below which the back-up resistances are switched on. This function is
active for the HP versions only.

A9: Back-up resistance heating differential
Differential for activating and disactivating the back-up resistances (see A8).

       5.7.          Alarms (“P” parameters)

P1: Flowswitch alarm delay at pump start-up
Sets delay in tripping flow switch alarm when the pump is started up (this allows flow rate to
rise to correct level; P9 must be = 5).

P2: Flowswitch setting alarm lag
Sets delay in tripping flowswitch alarm while running, in order to filter any variations in flow
rate or air bubbles in the water circuit.

P3: Low-pressure alarm lag at compressor start-up
Sets delay in tripping a low-pressure alarm when the compressor starts up, to allow the
compressor to reach a steady state of operation. This delay is also applied when the 4-way
valve is inverted in the gas circuit.

P4: Buzzer activation
Indicates the length of buzzer sounding in case of an alarm:
• if set to 0, the buzzer is always disabled;
• with a setting from 1 to 14, the buzzer is automatically switched off after this amount of
   time, in minutes
• if set to 15, the buzzer continues to sound for as long as the alarm which generated it
   persists.

PA: Low pressure alarm selection
Enables selection of whether a low pressure condition should be detected even when the
compressor is off (PA=1) or only when the compressor is active (PA=0 default).
In any case, when the compressor starts up, the alarm remains disactivated for time P3.

Pb:      High temperature alarm setting
This setting represents the high temperature alarm threshold (detected by probe B1); the differential is
fixed at 2°, and resetting is automatic (the indicator-only alarm relay is activated and “Ht” appears on
display). When the regulator is switched on, this alarm is inhibited for time “PC”.
PC:      High temperature at start-up alarm delay
This sets the lag in the high temperature alarm both when the power is switched on as well as when a
remote ON/OFF keypad command is given.

H5: Pump mode
Sets the operating mode of the water circulation pump. The pump may be disabled (H5=0),
always on (H5=1) or switched on at regulator command (H5=2) when heating or cooling is
required; the pump starts up first, followed by the compressor.
When the pump is disabled, the flowswitch alarm is disabled as well.
H7: Digital input ON/OFF
Enables or disables On/off selection from a digital input. If the setting is enabled (H7=1)
“open” status forces the machine to switch off, while with “closed” status the machine can
be switched on or off from the keypad.

H8: Number of terminals
Establishes the number of terminals connected to the machine. If H8=0, there is no remote
terminal, while if H8=1, the remote terminal is connected.

H9: Direct parameter modification lock
Allows modification of DIRECT and USER parameters from the keypad or remote control unit
to be disabled. The parameter settings can be called up on display in any case. The
enable/disable summer mode, enable/disable winter mode, forced defrosting and counter
reset functions are all disabled as well.
The enabled/disabled status setting option is as follows:

HA: Serial address
Establishes the address for serial connection, by means of an optional circuit board, to a

positioned within the radius of action of the remote control unit, it is possible to send the
parameter modifications simultaneously to all the instruments or to only one in particular. If
the password setting is 00, connection is immediate; any number other than zero means that
the customer must type in this number after the START key on the remote control keypad as
an access code whenever he is using the remote control unit.

HC: Second set of parameters
If Hc=1, this enables activation of a second set of DIRECT, USER and FACTORY parameters; in this
situation, the following parameters shift from level U (as indicated in the parameter chart in the
following manual) to level F; in other words, the level accessible with the manufacturer password:

6.     Alarms and indicators

        6.1.         Alarms

The following procedure results from an alarm tripping off:
• the buzzer sounds (if enabled, see parameter P4, and if the machine is not on stand-by);
• the alarm relay is activated;
• the temperature display starts flashing;
• the alarm code is shown on display, alternated with the temperature reading.

When the alarm is acknowledged by means of a manual reset or by simultaneously pressing
keys     and    for 5 seconds to clear (for manual-reset alarms), the following occurs:
• the buzzer turns off;
• the alarm relay is disactivated;
• the temperature display stops flashing;
• the alarm code is no longer shown on display.
If alarm conditions persist, the alarm procedure described above will repeat itself.

The alarm may be detected with the compressor on or off (depending on PA), regardless of
pump status. Results in immediate shutdown (without following the protection timing
procedure) of the compressor, or failure to start up the compressor if not already on.

t1:    Compressor thermal switch
Not system controlled.

FL:    Flowswitch
The alarm state is detected only if the pump is on, regardless of the compressor status. All
outlets are disabled: pump, compressor (without following the protection timing procedure),
condensation fan.
The water chiller control (H1≠0, 1) and the service water pump (H5≠0) must be enabled.

LO: Antifreeze
The alarm state is detected in the water chillers only (H1=2, 3, 4, 5 or 6) by means of the
evaporator outlet water-temperature probe (B2). The compressor and the condensation fan
are immediately shut down.
If the microprocessor is on standby, the alarm condition is not detected; the system only
controls the resistances.

Detected even when the machine is on standby.
A probe alarm leads to disactivation of the compressor, the condensation fan and the pump.

EE
EP: Eeprom error alarm
Indicates a problem in parameter memorisation by the machine’s non volatile memory
(EEPROM); the microprocessor continues to make adjustments with the data present in the
volatile memory (RAM) which contains a physical copy of all data. As soon as there is a
power failure of any sort, the system set up will be lost. The buzzer and alarm relay are not
activated.

EU
EO: High or low voltage power supply error
If power supply voltage is too low, the message “EU” appears on display; if voltage is too
high “EO” will appear. In these cases, correct microprocessor operation is no longer
guaranteed.

EL: Line “interference” error
This alarm is tripped if there is strong interference (loud noise) on the line. In this case, if the
fans are running on a regulator module, they will operate on an ON/OFF basis as long as the
interference continues.

Ht: High ambient temperature
This alarm is activated if the threshold reported in parameter “Pb” (detected by B1) is
exceeded. It is delayed at switch-on by parameter “PC” and leads to activation of the alarm
relay without disabling outlets. Resetting is automatic as soon as the situation which
provoked the alarm is normalised.

        6.2.          Indicators

n1: Compressor maintenance.
When the number of compressor running hours exceeds the maintenance call threshold
(factory set at zero; this alarm is normally disabled), the maintenance indicator is activated.
The buzzer and alarm relay are not activated.

d1: Defrosting status
During defrosting, the machine displays message d1 alternating with the temperature
reading; since this is merely an operating message, the standard alarm procedure is not
tripped off (buzzer, alarm relay).

r1:    Defrosting error.
If the defrosting procedure continues to its maximum time limit, while temperature or
external-contact defrost-end control had been selected, the message r1 will appear on
display. The message can be cleared using the alarm cancellation procedure or by running
another correct defrosting cycle.
The buzzer and alarm relay are not activated.

Cn: Communication error with remote terminal
If there should be a communication error between the “Compact” microchiller and the
remote terminal, message Cn appears on display; check the cable and parameter H8.
The buzzer and alarm relay are not activated. The display continues to show Cn.

NOTE:
If the microprocessor is set to standby while at least one alarm is present, all indicators remain
activated except for the buzzer, which switches off. Keep in mind, in any case, that when the
machine is already on standby no non-system alarms are detected (that is, only the eeprom
and probe alarms continue to be monitored, while none of the digital input alarms are
monitored).

7.     Extra microchiller circuit boards

       7.1.          Fan ON/OFF control board

This module enabled conversion of a PWM regulation signal in an ON/OFF outlet by means of
a relay, to allow control of the condensation fans. The control relay can be switched from 10
A to 250 Vac in AC1 (1/3 inductive HP).
This board is included as standard equipment in units FREEZY HP / MU LC HP / MU ST LC HP /
MU LC PF HP.

       7.2.          Fan speed control board

The phase-cutting circuit board allows control of the axial condensation fan rotation speed.

IMPORTANT: Power supply to the microchiller (G and GO) and the speed control board
must be in phase.

Calculating minimum and maximum fan speed
Given the range of motors available on the market, it has become necessary to foresee the
possibility of setting the voltage provided by the electronic circuit board corresponding to the
temperature of minimum and maximum speed.
If factory set parameters are not applicable, proceed as follows:
• set parameter F2=0 (fans always on) and reset F3 and F4.
• increase F4 until the fan is running at sufficient speed (remember to check, after having
     stopped the fan, that it will start up again if left alone).
• "copy” this setting onto parameter F3; the minimum speed voltage is set.
• connect a voltmeter (positioned in ac, 250V) between terminals “L” (in other words, the
     two external contacts).

•  increase F4 until the voltage stabilises at approximately 2 Vac (inductive motors) or 1.6-1.7
   Vac (capacitive motors). Once the setting has been identified, you will note that even by
   increasing F4, the voltage will not drop any further. Avoid increasing F4 past this point to
   prevent damage to the motor (which could occur at 30/40 units over the identified limit).
• Set F2=3

The procedure is completed.
The fan speed control circuit board is supplied as optional equipment in units FREEZY and
FREEZY HP, MU LC HP, MU ST LC HP, MU PF LC HP.

       7.3.          Serial converter

The serial converter is an electronic device that allows interfacing of the Compact Air Blue
microchiller to a standard RS485 (asynchronous) supervision network and/or to a remote
terminal.
For correct operation of the remote terminal and supervisor, remember to set parameters H8
(H8=1) and HA (HA=serial address of supervisor RS485 network). The supervisor serial line
must terminate with the 120 Ohm 1/4W converter resistance found at the end of the
network.
Take care to comply with the following instructions:
1. Do not simultaneously earth the transformer secondary which powers the board and the
remote terminal cable braid; this would damage the board irreparably.
2. If using the supervisor, do not power up the converter before having connected it to the
microprocessor, or keep the microprocessor switched off while doing so: otherwise the
communication between the supervisor and any other peripherals connected to the RS485
bus could be disturbed.
