Introduction
When it comes to the world of Wide Area Network (WAN) optimization, there are two kinds of
primary users. First, there are the corporate enterprise users who sit at field or branch locations
and access information across the corporate enterprise WAN. Also, there are the mobile
employees, the road warriors, who travel outside the branch office and access information via a
Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection across the public Internet. Both types of users require
improved delivery of information.
Many Federal organizations, which employ both user types, are consolidating their distributed
enterprise field site infrastructure into their data centers to achieve a more manageable, cost-
effective, and efficient enterprise infrastructure. In addition, many Federal organizations are
grappling with the problem of how to improve the performance of applications accessed across
both their enterprise WAN and through their VPNs by their many remote end users. Application
acceleration and WAN optimization products are designed to provide Information Technology
(IT) organizations with the tools to meet these goals. Although many products on the market
perform their intended purpose, they can also negatively affect currently deployed corporate
enterprise network policies or prohibit the deployment of future corporate enterprise network-
oriented services. While it makes sense for remote VPN users to enter the enterprise network via
a non-transparent VPN, it is critical that enterprise users utilizing the corporate enterprise WAN
have visibility into the network services that are running on their corporate enterprise network.
That is where Cisco comes in. We offer the right kind of WAN optimization for the right kind of
user.
To provide the benefits of WAN optimization and application acceleration without
compromising the existing corporate enterprise network, an enterprise solution must be
transparent to the underlying network infrastructure. On the corporate WAN, visibility is
required to deliver network-based services. Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS)
offers an outstanding network-integrated, transparent application acceleration and WAN
optimization solution for the corporate enterprise network. By complying with existing network
configurations and features, Cisco WAAS allows <CUSTOMER_NAME> to safely achieve the
benefits of network consolidation without compromising the investment in existing network
features.
Complementary to the Cisco WAAS Enterprise solution, to meet the needs of today‘s road
warriors that require access to the enterprise WAN via a VPN, we offer the Cisco WAAS Mobile
solution. Unlike enterprise users, Network Transparency is not a requirement for mobile users
connecting from the Internet via VPN, which typically is the case for home-office users,
telecommuters, and road warriors. On the Internet where you have no control over the services
running on the network, having visibility provides no benefit. Rather, delivering the traffic via a
corporate VPN prevents any ―man-in-the-middle‖ attack on a connection — similar to the

remote access/VPN connectivity. The important fact is Cisco offers a complementary solution
that best meets the needs of each user type — the corporate enterprise user accessing across the
corporate WAN and the mobile road warrior who is accessing across the Internet through a VPN.

The Challenge
A number of Federal organizations today are struggling with improving the performance of
information delivered across the WAN. Whether you are involved in the myriad of Federal data
center consolidations, just trying to improve the delivery of information going across your
corporate WAN links, or trying to improve performance for your mobile users, moving data
across the WAN can cause huge performance delays that did not exist when that same data
traversed a Local Area Network (LAN) environment (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. Significant Delays Occur when Accessing Files across a WAN
                                     from a Centralized Server

As many Federal organizations strive to consolidate data center applications, maintain adequate
performance of these applications, reduce field-site-office infrastructure costs, and meet the
performance needs of their branch and remote users, they are facing a new set of challenges:
 Inefficient use of expensive WAN bandwidth means you are not getting what you pay for
(see Figure 2 and Figure 3).

 WAN bandwidth consumption is NOT aligned with business Quality of Service (QoS)
         policy
 Adding expensive bandwidth and more servers doesn‘t solve the whole problem
 Slow application response time hurts end user productivity
 Most WAN acceleration solutions won‘t protect existing investments in QoS, security,
         monitoring, and management.
 How to improve application performance for their mobile road warriors when the quality
of the network connection is typically lower than the corporate WAN and the footprint on
Personal Computer (PC)/Laptop is smaller and shared with other applications (unlike the
dedicated device in a branch location).

Figure 3. Latency Can Significantly Degrade Throughput Investments

As a result of these performance issues, Federal organizations are investigating WAN
optimization technologies to improve the delivery of information across the corporate enterprise
network and across the public Internet via the VPN. WAN optimization technologies are
designed to provide IT organizations with the performance they need to centralize their
infrastructure and/or simply improve the delivery of information over the WAN. Many corporate
enterprise WAN optimization solutions on the market require expensive, inefficient network
overlays that can negatively affect other network features that <CUSTOMER_NAME> has
implemented. To gain the benefits of enterprise WAN optimization and application acceleration
while preserving your existing (or future) production environment, <CUSTOMER_NAME>
must implement an enterprise WAN optimization solution that is transparent to your underlying
network infrastructure and scalable enough to grow to whatever your enterprise WAN
optimization requirements become. To provide the corporate road warrior with improved
application delivery performance, <CUSTOMER_NAME> must provide improved performance
through their corporate VPN.

The Cisco Solution
Cisco has a WAAS end-to-end solution designed to meet the needs of both types of users: the
corporate enterprise users who sit at field or branch locations and access information across the
corporate enterprise WAN, and the mobile road warriors who access information via a VPN
connection across the public Internet. Cisco WAAS allows enterprises to meet their corporate
data consolidation needs and improve the delivery of information while maintaining total

transparency to the underlying corporate network infrastructure. It is the most scalable WAN
optimization solution available. Whether <CUSTOMER_NAME> is consolidating their field site
server, storage, and backup infrastructure into data centers, or simply trying to improve the
delivery of information that has to traverse the WAN, Cisco WAAS eliminates the need for
costly network overlays, providing true network feature compliance, transparency, and
integration. Cisco WAAS allows <CUSTOMER_NAME> to achieve LAN-like performance for
field-site-based access of enterprise applications. With Cisco WAAS, you can consolidate data
servers without affecting workflow and employee productivity, and reduce Total Cost of
Ownership (TCO) through simple network integration. Independent tests show that Cisco WAAS
reduces traffic crossing the WAN by as much as 85 percent (see link to Veritest 2006 Report in
the References section of this document), while providing performance, integration and
transparency that is market leading (see link to Miercom Report in the References section of this
document).
Cisco WAAS also offers the best scalable solution. With Web Cache Communications Protocol
(WCCP) developed by Cisco Systems, <CUSTOMER_NAME> can cluster up to 32 devices at
any one location. Using a Cisco Application Control Engine (ACE) load balancer, Cisco WAAS
can scale up to 16,000 devices or 4 million optimized Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
connections at any one location. With Cisco WAAS, regardless of the interception mechanism
<CUSTOMER_NAME> uses to integrate into the network fabric, Cisco WAAS provides high
availability, load balancing, and failover. With a Cisco WAAS solution,
<CUSTOMER_NAME> will have the confidence of knowing that they invested in a WAN
optimization solution that comes packaged with award-winning global technical support.
Regarding the mobile road warriors, Cisco WAAS Mobile offers industry-leading performance
under the most challenging network connectivity conditions. It requires the smallest PC
footprint, and requires the lowest TCO normally associated with installation of client software on
mass-user PCs. Cisco WAAS Mobile uniquely addresses the challenges associated with mobile
users.
Cisco‘s approach to providing application layer acceleration is to provide these adapters in
partnership with the application vendor and not do any reverse engineering of the applications.
To that end, Cisco and Microsoft have been in partnership to provide Common Internet File
System (CIFS), Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI), and video application
adapters. More recently, however, Cisco and Microsoft announced a new and very exciting joint
partnership, known as Windows on WAAS or WoW. The WoW partnership includes the
development of joint architectures that integrate Windows Server 2008 with Cisco WAN
optimization for branch-office environments. Cisco will leverage a new virtualization component
within the Cisco WAAS family of appliances that will enable customers to deploy Windows
Server 2008 within their network infrastructures for branch offices.
The two companies intend for Cisco to offer Windows Server 2008 pre-installed on its new
virtualized Cisco WAAS appliances that will be available in late 2008. To optimize the value of

this solution for customers, the two companies plan to test and validate the resulting architectures
for remote IT infrastructure in the branch office and to offer integrated customer support. While
the Cisco WAAS appliance (the Cisco WAE-674) is already available, this joint solution will be
available summer 2008.

Product Overview
Cisco WAAS Functionality
Cisco WAAS has three main pillars of functionality to help achieve your field site objectives:
 Application Acceleration — Allows you to centralize existing field site applications and
deploy new applications centrally from the data center while meeting response time and
      user experience requirements.
 WAN Optimization — Allows you to improve performance by overcoming challenges
presented by the WAN such as latency, bandwidth, and packet loss.
 Wide Area File Services (WAFS) and Print Services — Helps you overcome
performance limitations such as latency, data transfer, and bandwidth consumption,
allowing field office users to receive LAN-like access to centralized file-server data.
Cisco WAAS also provides disconnected mode of operation to ensure productivity even
during periods of network disconnection, and print services that support ―point-and-
print,‖ centralized driver distribution, and active directory publishing.
When integrated with Cisco IOS software, Cisco WAAS maximizes network performance
through QoS and monitoring services. Unlike traditional WAN optimization technology, Cisco
WAAS integrates transparently within a customer‘s existing network, preserving IP information
to maintain policies that are already in place, such as security, QoS, visibility, and monitoring.
When Cisco WAAS ties in with IOS software, it provides a complete solution for WAN
optimization. If you are already using Cisco IOS software operating on a Cisco ISR, Cisco
WAAS preserves the configurations of all of its functions.

The Cisco WAN optimization delivery solution, including Cisco ISRs, Cisco IOS Software, and
WAEs operating Cisco WAAS software, complements our data center application delivery
capabilities. Cisco WAAS is deployed on a device on each side of the WAN — a Cisco WAE
(see Figure 7).
At the field site, Cisco WAAS software operating on WAE appliances or network modules
delivers services for compression, caching, software distribution, and local file and application
protocol proxying. In addition, Cisco IOS Software in field site Cisco ISRs delivers services for
performance monitoring, application recognition, and traffic prioritization.

software for end users and software deployed on servers near existing VPN concentrators.

Cisco WAAS Architecture
Cisco employs a modular, multilayer architecture (see Figure 8) for WAN optimization and
application acceleration. Cisco WAAS achieves superior results over alternative offerings by
applying optimization at three separate layers:
 Layers 3 and 4: Integration Optimization — Protects investment through transparent
network integration and eliminates the need for complex network overlays.
 Layer 4: WAN Optimization — Overcomes performance challenges associated with
WAN bandwidth, packet loss, and transport protocols, and optimizes all TCP traffic.
 Layer 7: Application Optimization — Reduces latency and minimizes bandwidth
consumption for specific application protocols to improve performance.

                                    Figure 8. Modular, Multilayer Architecture

Layers 3 and 4: Integration Optimization
Logical and Physical Integration
Cisco WAAS is the only application-delivery platform today that offers true packet network
transparency and holistic integration. At the foundation of this optimization architecture is the
logical and physical integration of the Cisco WAAS solution with your existing packet network
infrastructure. From a physical standpoint, Cisco WAAS integrates cleanly and directly into
existing network components, such as Cisco ISRs, allowing the network to provide the
framework for accelerating application delivery over the WAN. From a logical perspective,
Cisco WAAS preserves the application data the network needs to see to be able to provide the
services that are already configured such as NetFlow for monitoring and reporting; QoS for
classification, queuing, and policing; and security policies.
Network transparency also uniquely allows for automatic discovery, the ability for accelerators
deployed on the network to identify each accelerator in the network path so they can
automatically determine the optimal path for application traffic flow. Through automatic
discovery, IT staff can more easily deploy services to improve application performance over the
WAN because they do not need to implement overlay networks.
Application Traffic Policy Engine
At the lowest layer of Cisco WAAS is the application traffic policy engine layer. Cisco WAAS
makes high-speed low-level decisions on how to optimize traffic that has been received, based

on the configured policy within the application policy engine. The WAE will then route those
traffic flows through the appropriate layers of optimization or acceleration to provide the optimal
levels of performance for the application.

Layer 4: WAN Optimization
Cisco WAAS provides a series of WAN optimization capabilities that are application-agnostic
and can be applied to any TCP-based application.

Data Redundancy Elimination
Data Redundancy Elimination (DRE) is a form of advanced compression that helps optimize the
use of available network capacity by fingerprinting incoming and outgoing traffic so that it only
needs to traverse a link once. DRE inspects incoming TCP traffic and identifies data patterns. As
patterns are identified and added to the DRE database, they can be used in the future as a
compression history. Repeated patterns are replaced with very small signatures that instruct the
remote device how to rebuild the application flow. Patterns that have been learned from one
application flow can be used when another flow is seen. DRE can provide from 2:1 to 100:1
compression.

Transport Flow Optimization
Transport Flow Optimization (TFO) helps Cisco WAAS improve TCP behavior in problematic
WAN conditions to allow clients and servers to experience better stability, higher performance,
and more efficient use of available WAN resources. Cisco TFO implements window scaling,
advanced congestion management, and other optimizations to increase overall throughput,
reduce latency, and improve efficiency and performance of TCP connections.

Content Distribution
Content Distribution reduces WAN latency and congestion by enabling network administrators
to push software or data, such as a software patch, application update, or video-on-demand, out
to remote office caches before users begin making requests for the content. Instead of making
each user download high-demand content over the WAN, administrators can pre-populate remote
office Cisco WAAS caches with the content ahead of time. Users, in effect, pull content from
local sources and experience LAN-like access response rates.

Layer 7: Application Optimization
Application-specific acceleration is employed for applications that cannot be optimized
sufficiently by WAN optimization alone. For example with ―chatty‖ protocols (protocols that
create an excessive number of messages between users and servers), simply compressing flows is
not enough to improve performance. Application-specific acceleration is able to provide the right

level of application acceleration for those protocols to help improve the performance over the
WAN.

Integrated Local Services
In addition to the WAN optimization capabilities, Cisco WAAS provides integrated local
services, such as print services. By keeping print services in the remote office close to the remote
user, you keep massive print jobs from having to traverse the WAN back and forth to go from a
remote user in a field site to a printer in a field site.
Cisco WAAS Mobile achieves industry-leading performance by extending Cisco WAAS
acceleration technologies to mobile users and includes the following.

Advanced Data Transfer Compression
Cisco WAAS Mobile maintains a persistent and bidirectional history of data on both the mobile
PC and the Cisco WAAS Mobile server. This history can be used in current and future transfers,
across different VPN sessions or even after a reboot, to minimize bandwidth consumption and
improve performance. In addition, instead of using a single algorithm for all file types, Cisco
WAAS Mobile uses a file-format-specific compression technique to provide better compression
than generic compression for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files; Adobe Shockwave
Flash (SWF) files; Zip files; and Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), Graphics
Interchange Format (GIF), and Portable Network Graphics (PNG) files.

Application-Specific Acceleration
Cisco WAAS Mobile reduces application-specific latency for a broad range of applications
including:
 Microsoft Exchange: Microsoft Outlook Messaging Application Program Interface
         (MAPI) Protocol acceleration
     IBM Lotus Notes
 Windows File servers or Network Attached Servers Common Internet File System
         (CIFS) Acceleration
 Web-based applications: Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) acceleration, supporting
         enterprise Intranet and Internet Applications
 Secured Web-based applications: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)
acceleration, supporting secure Intranet applications without compromising security.

Transport Optimization
Cisco WAAS Mobile extends Cisco WAAS technologies to handle the timing variations found
in packet switched wireless networks, the significant bandwidth latency problems of broadband

satellite links, and noisy Wi-Fi and DSL connections. The result is significantly higher link
resiliency.

Smallest PC Footprint
Unlike other alternatives that are ported from Linux-based branch office WAN optimization
devices requiring significant Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory, and disk resources, Cisco
WAAS Mobile is purpose-built from the start for Windows-based PCs. As a result, it is highly
efficient and requires a 40 percent smaller footprint and fewer computing resources. This lean
architecture helps ensure the best possible performance while minimizing resource consumption.

Solution Components
Cisco WAAS requires a minimum of three devices:
    1. The Cisco WAAS Central Manager (CM) is a secure management Graphical User Interface
(GUI) that runs on a dedicated Cisco WAE device. The CM can be clustered in an
active/standby configuration for high availability. Interaction with the CM is done using
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) (https), and interaction
between the CM and managed WAEs is done over HTTP over SSL. The CM provides
powerful functions for simplifying manageability by allowing for the definition of device
groups (configurations can be applied to groups of devices) and Role-Based Access Control
(RBAC) which allows for provisioning of management capabilities by user.
    2. The Core Cisco WAAS is situated at a central location, usually the data center. It also
runs on a dedicated Cisco WAE device. Which Cisco WAE device and how many are
needed are largely due to a sizing exercise and whether high availability and failover are
desired. Cisco will work with <CUSTOMER_NAME> to determine the appropriate Core
       appliance(s).
    3. The field site Cisco WAAS devices can be either a WAE appliance or a network module
inserted in a Cisco 2800 or 3800 ISR router. Which device is appropriate is again

Deployment Scenarios
Cisco offers multiple ways to deploy Cisco WAAS, supporting both in-line and out-of-band
deployments. Cisco WAAS relies on network interception to be integrated into the network as
well as to receive packets from flows that should be optimized. Cisco WAAS supports the
following out-of-path deployment mechanisms, which are all able to place the WAE logically in-
path but physically off-path: WCCPv2, PBR, and ACE. Each of them plus in-line is discussed
below.
     Web Cache Communication Protocol, Version 2 (WCCPv2) — WCCPv2 allows
WAE devices to register against up to 32 routers in a pair of service groups. Up to 32
WAEs can be in a single service group, thereby providing performance and scalability
increases as additional devices are added (assumes multiple flows are present). WCCP
provides automatic load-balancing, fail-over, and fail-through operation. Given that
devices can be inserted on-the-fly and removed nearly non-disruptively, WCCP is the
interception mechanism of choice for performance, scalability, and availability. WCCPv2
with Cisco WAAS is currently supported on a variety of routing platforms, including the
Cisco Integrated Services Router (ISR models 1800, 2800, and 3800), Cisco 3700 series
Access Routers, Cisco 7200 series routers (with NPE-400, NPE-G1, NPE-G2 only), and
Cisco 7600 routers. WCCP is also supported on a variety of switching products,
including the Cisco Catalyst 3560/3750, Cisco Catalyst 4500/4948, and Cisco Catalyst
      6500.
 Policy-Based Routing (PBR) — PBR can be used as an interception mechanism for
Cisco WAAS. With PBR, the WAE is treated as a ‗next-hop‘ router, and the policy route
is used when traffic matching a specific access list is encountered. PBR can be coupled
with IP SLA or CDP neighbor tracking (L2-adjacency required for CDP neighbor
tracking) to render the route unavailable should a WAE device go offline. PBR supports
active/passive failover only and no load-balancing.
 Cisco Application Control Engine (ACE) — The Cisco ACE module and ACE
appliance provide industry-leading performance and scalability metrics for integrating
Cisco WAAS into a data center or campus network. With the Cisco ACE appliance or
module for the Cisco Catalyst 6500, Cisco WAEs are added to a serverfarm and placed in

service either at the Datacenter Entry (DCE) point or in the server distribution layer
(server load balanced, or SLB, configuration).See Figure 6 for Cisco WAAS-ACE
      diagram.
 In-Line Interception — Cisco WAAS supports a physical in-path option, which allows
the WAE to be inserted physically between two network devices such as the branch
office LAN switch and branch office WAN router. The Cisco WAAS inline card has four
10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet ports in two port groups. Each port group provides a fail-to-
wire bypass service with mechanical relays to ensure that network connectivity is not
interrupted should a device fail or a software crash be encountered on the WAE. The
Cisco WAAS in-path card is supported in any Cisco WAAS appliance model.

Cisco WAAS Mobile Deployment
The client-side software is transparent and requires no user maintenance or local configuration
changes:
 Remote client configuration and installation: The Cisco WAAS Mobile client
configuration is established by the system administrator and the client software image can
be loaded directly to remote devices using standard software distribution products
including Microsoft, LANDesk, Altiris, and BigFix system management programs. The
software client can also become part of the standard enterprise desktop image.
 Self end-user installation: Although the Cisco WAAS Mobile client software can be
installed and configured by the end user, standard enterprise configurations can be used
to ensure that the client software is operational without any user interaction.
 No reconfiguration of applications: Cisco WAAS Mobile redirects data transparently to
help ensure that no configuration changes are required to any application.
 No requirement to open incoming ports on client firewall or other local security software:
full preservation of existing desktop security
 Auto-detection of high-speed networks to automatically transition to an office network.
Cisco WAAS Mobile server software can be deployed easily:
 No changes are required to the application or file servers.
 No changes are required in network resources such as routers, switches, and WAN
      accelerators.
 No changes to IP network topologies are needed because the traffic is directed to the
Cisco WAAS Mobile server through the client software.
 In the event of a server failure, the only effect is loss of optimization, not loss of
      connectivity.

occur.
When considering WAN optimization products to centralize costly distributed infrastructure and
improve application delivery for remote users, <CUSTOMER_NAME> must consider the total
effects of these products on their existing network. Many products require network
administrators to design complex overlay networks to control the direction of accelerated traffic.
This is not the case with Cisco WAAS, which offers an ideal solution because it provides
comprehensive optimization architecture, while integrating transparently with your existing
enterprise network and security infrastructure. By implementing a network-integrated and
transparent solution like Cisco WAAS, <CUSTOMER_NAME> can significantly reduce TCO,
improve application delivery and performance, and increase employee productivity.
The superior architectural design of Cisco WAAS allows users in field sites to experience
response times and productivity levels that match those of headquarters-based users — without
deploying significant infrastructure at each remote site. The Cisco WAAS solution provides
numerous services for minimizing WAN bandwidth consumption, optimizing the efficiency of
WAN bandwidth usage, maximizing throughput when there is congestion on the links,
minimizing distance- and protocol-imposed latency, and controlling WAN behavior based on
application type and organizational policies.
When we include Cisco WAAS Mobile in the solution , <CUSTOMER_NAME> gets an end-to-
end solution that improves performance for all traffic for all users independent of whether they
sit in a branch or field location or whether they are accessing the network through the VPN.
In summary, Cisco offers <CUSTOMER_NAME> the best overall solution for the best return on
your investment in each of the following areas:
 Cisco WAAS offers the lowest TCO for branch locations and data-center
 Replaces more devices in the branch than other Wan Optimization technologies

                   software distribution servers like SMS
 Other technologies‘ support costs are often two to three times that of Cisco WAAS
              — With Cisco WAAS, 3 to 4 year support savings alone can almost pay for the
                   product
 The Cisco WAAS ISR integration lowers operating expenses (support, space, and
management) by up to 70 percent
 Reduces centralized file-server load by up to 90 percent
              — This results in fewer servers needed in the data-center and significantly improves
                   power, cooling, and space savings
              — Other technologies usually increase data center server load
