Published by the Municipality of Nicosia, this monthly newsletter is a visitor’s guide to prominent sights and cultural highlights. W First-time visitors are bound to enjoy what our regular guests have long discovered: the harmonious coexistence of the past and the present in a city that features European lifestyle intertwined with local customs and traditions. Within the impressive Venetian walls lies one of the world’s oldest capitals, home to remarkable medieval and neo-classical buildings, numerous museums and art galleries, as well as impressive Byzantine churches veiled in timeless devotion. Narrow streets lead you to traditional craftsmen and local tavernas. And after nightfall, a string of hot spots invite you to enjoy a full spectrum of musical entertainment from jazz, to rock, pop and traditional Greek music and dance. The new city outside the walls with its growing commercial and business centre features upmarket shopping opportunities and trendy street cafes with a cosmopolitan air. Sadly, our capital is still divided, and its reunification will always be our highest priority. In the meantime, it remains as hospitable as ever, welcoming visitors from around the world, offering a special blend of business and pleasure. Enjoy it! Eleni Mavrou Mayor of Nicosia 2 Nicosia ¡ icosia, the Latin equivalent of the Greek name Lefcosia, carries a history spanning 6,000 years. Originally known as Ledra, the first traces of its current name appeared in the 3rd century BC, when Leucus, the son of Ptolemy rebuilt Ledra, renaming it Leucotheon. In the last eight hundred years it had served as the capital of Cyprus. For the last three decades, since the Turkish invasion of 1974, it has been a divided capital, its infamous Green Line also known as the Buffer Zone patrolled by UN troops. Built as a fortress, the only town on the island located inland, it has weathered a long list of conquerors. Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Arabs, the Frankish Lusignan dynasty, Venetians and Ottoman Turks all held sway over Cyprus before British colonial rule in the 19th century. All, and to varying degrees, have left their mark on the city. The most significant influences on modern Nicosia date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Under the Lusignans, the capital saw the construction of a number of palaces, mansions, churches and monasteries. Only a few survive, since the Lusignans' successors, the Venetians, proceeded to destroy most of the buildings to make use of the stone for a new more compact fortification. Faced with the threat of Ottoman Turk invasion, the Venetians' military planners decided to withdraw from the Lusignan military fortifications and created a defensive line around the city. The buildings standing outside of this line, including most of the inheritance from the Lusignan period, were torn down and used to underpin the vast earthwork of a new defensive wall, what is known today as the old walled city. Impressive as Nicosia's defenses were, however, they were unable to keep out the Ottomans. After seven weeks of desperate resistance, Nicosia fell in 1570 and a period of Ottoman rule followed lasting until the arrival of the British in 1878. Since independence in 1960 Nicosia has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan European city yet it remains compact enough to be explored on foot. 3 Town Hall Laiki Yitonia The Cyprus Museum Where to Go The Old City of Nicosia is surrounded by a complete star shape walls (referred to as ‘The Walls’) built by the Venetians in 1567 in their effort to fortify the city against a threatened Ottoman invasion. The Walls have eleven heart shaped bastions and three gates. Famagusta Gate or Porta Julia, the biggest and most elaborate of the 3 is since 1982 the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Nicosia. The other two gates are The Paphos Gate at west situated by the Green Line and Kerynia Gate to the North, today in the occupied area of the city. The Nicosia Town Hall (15, K. Papaeologou Avenue, Tel 22797000) is built on one of them, the Bastion Davila, overlooking Eleftheria Square. Recent excavations on the bastion of Podocataro have revealed the remains of the siege of the city by the Turks in 1570. Mud brick embrasures, parts of armoury and weapons as well as two skeletons, decapitated by the Ottomans, verify the descriptions of contemporary writers describing the fall of Nicosia. The Old City is fascinating to stroll through for shopping or for dining with its narrow streets, small shops, carved balconies, inner yards, churches, mosques, and Byzantine arches. CHRYSANILIOTISSA AREA Near the Famagusta Gate (see page 9), the quarter takes its name from the oldest Byzantine church in Nicosia, dedicated to "Our Lady of the Golden Flax". Built in 1463 by the greek origine Lusignan Queen Eleni Paleologina. Following the signs near the church you will find the Chrysaliniotissa Crafts Centre (see page 9). Numerous taverns and bars are also to be found near this area. ARCHIEPISKOPOS KYPRIANOS SQUARE The square in front of the Archbishopric Palace, where monuments and buildings of historical and religious interest abound, including the Ethnographic Museum of Cyprus, the National Struggle Museum and Agios Ioannis Cathedral (see page 9) as well as The Pancyprian Gymnasium Museum.. The play is about different classes, prejudice, obsession and the fight between dark and light. When Maria meets John, her whole life changes, she suddenly loses a prestigious job and her relationship that she had for two years ends. John is an artist who draws in the streets to make a living, at first, Maria looks down on him when she first meets him, but then her curiosity finally brings them both together. Just when things are going smooth with John, he vanishes. Once again feeling another failure, she cuts herself off from the outside, creating a world in her living room to soothe her. John becomes the statue in her room that she talks to everyday, where they develop a special relationship. There are time when the statue plays with her emotions and times he fulfills her wishes. Without her knowing, an angel visits to help sort out her life. There is a conflict between the statue and the angel, the statue wants to live and it will do it's best to get rid of the angel. NICOSIA RACE CLUB Horseracing was revived in Cyprus from the end of the 19th century. However, the tradition of the sport in this country, as evidenced by archaeological findings existing in the Cyprus Museum, is lost in the depth of the Hellenistic period, where we come across horseracing descriptions by Homer and other ancient authors. Horseracing in those days was actually a "sport of kings" who participated in them. When Kings of ancient Salamis of Cyprus died, their horses were buried with them. Horse racing is for the first time entered in the Olympic Games in the 7th century b.c. Makarios Avenue, parallel to it Stasikratous Street, and Ledra Street with its narrow streets around the old city, including the well know Laiki Yitonia (Folk Neighbourhood). In addition to shopping for handicrafts, embroidery, pottery and other local made items, visitors to Nicosia might like to take advantage of the capital's modern commercial centres to buy such items as the latest design fashions, prescription eye wear, perfumes and liqueurs, many of which are less costly here than in Europe. Spend a day window shopping at Marks & Spencer, Ermes, D. Tsaousis 1.000.000 Items or visit one of the local shopping centres such as Galaxias, City Plaza and Capital. Also take the time to visit Stasikratous Street, a haven for fashion, shoes and accessories known for its attractive and exclusive boutiques. If you follow Makarios Avenue until the end and then turn right, you will get to Eleftheria Square which leads to the old town centre. Most of the shopping area in the old part of Nicosia is now pedestrianised so it is easy to ramble through its zigzag streets, especially in Laiki Yitonia which is of particular interest to travelers who want a taste of Cypriot culture. Laiki Yitonia is a renovated eighteenth century enclave where local artisans and craftsmen display their wares along cobblestone lanes. Here too bougainvillea laced restaurants beckon with the aroma of roast lamb and Greek coffee. If you go back to Eleftheria Square and follow the walls past the Town Hall and Post Office you will arrive at Eleftherios Venizelos Square, otherwise known as "OHI" square. It is particularly colourful and worth a visit. It is a good idea to shop around before buying and once you begin you will realise just how much there is to see. Take your time and relax while shopping. From shoes to spectacles to clothes, you are bound to find something to suit your taste and pocket and at the same time you will discover a little of the daily life in the capital. Walking tours of Nicosia Get to know the capital by walking Within the framework of wider efforts to get foreign visitors better acquainted with the old city within the walls, the Lefkosia (Nicosia) Municipality from 1987 established a series of thematic walking tours. These tours have been reorganized to present various new aspects of the old city as well as the city outside the walls. A city like Lefkosia (Nicosia) with its 5000 year-long history has much to offer. By walking, one gets a better feel for the place and its atmosphere, then and now, and a better understanding of its continual cultural development. This is the philosophy upon which these walking tours of Nicosia are based. CHRYSALINIOTISSA AND KAIMAKLI: THE PAST RESTORED THE TOUR IS CONDUCTED ON AN OLD WOODEN BUS ... AND IT’S WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE! Visitors are taken to two of the most peaceful areas in Nicosia. First to the most historic neighbourhood of the walled city Chrysaliniotissa and then to Kaimakli, a “village” within the Municipality of Lefkosia. Visitors witness the ongoing efforts to revitalize Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood under the Nicosia Master Plan. The renovation of old and construction of new buildings; young families moving in, breathing new life into an area that had lain derelict after the Turkish invasion of 1974. At Kaimakli its old nucleus still boasts some of the most distinctive examples of late 19th and early 20th century domestic architecture, built by the renowned master craftsmen of Kaimakli. WALKING TOUR NICOSIA (within the walls) The Nicosia Walking Tour aims to provide an overall picture of the city within the walls and how it has evolved with the passing of time and historical events especially its development from the Medieval times to the present through architecture and some of its churches. Visitors also have the chance to visit workshops and shops, where craftsmen still make things the traditional way: shoemakers, candle makers, blacksmiths, chair makers, cobblers, coppersmiths and tailors, are just a few of the many endangered trades covered by the tour. 34 Kaimakli Linear Park Nicosia Walls NICOSIA - LEFKOSIA: OUTSIDE THE WALLS It was during British rule (1878-1960) that the city outside the walls began to develop, as it was the British who first built government offices outside the walls. Since then new residential areas have spread around the walls, joining near by village/municipalities to create a large urban area. The tour aims to show the development of the city outside the walls from the end of the 19th century to the present; however emphasis is also given to the prehistoric past of the city which developed along the Pedieos River and to the excavations revealing Nicosia’s unbroken cultural continuity. The bus drives outside the walls, through the western gate of the walls Paphos Gate. Participants then walk along the Pedieos River to the Government offices, the archaeological excavation at Agios Georgios Hill and then are driven to the Presidential Palace and the English School. After a short walk in the neighbourhood of Ayioi Omologites, the bus returns back to the old city. These guided tours are offered free of charge by the Municipality of Nicosia and are organised in association with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Cyprus Tourist Guides Association. The starting and ending point of the walks is the: Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Information Office, Aristokyprou 11, Laiki Yitonia, (East of Elefhteria Square), tel.: 22674264. Each walking tour lasts not more than two hours and 45 minutes, including a half-hour break for refreshments. Participants are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and light clothes for all walking tours. A hat is also recommended during summer months. Athalassa - National Park Seven nature trails covering a total of 20 kms exist in this park situated in the southeastern edge of the capital, near Latsia.
