SUN-NRGey Bangladesh is involved in solar-based activities since 2000. We D esi gne d ,
Dev el ope d & M an u fact ure d : - Solar Home System, Community Solar System, Charge
Controller, 10W 220V FTL with AC ~ AC Inverter, Hybrid IPS, Wall-mounted LED Lights, LED Hurricane,
Mobile Phone Charger, Torchlight Charger, Cassette Player Charger, Lights for By-Cycle &
Rickshaw, etc. Initially it was our hobby now turned to profession. We started with mechanical,
electrical and electronics, spare-parts manufacturing. Then started assembling of Instant Power
Supply [IPS] for computer power back up and gradually started designing of charge controller, LED
Light and Lamps, on sub-contract basis, subsequently started total Home System, Community
System. At presently, we concentrated more on Community System, because we wanted to reach
the hardcore poor of my country as well as in other part of the world. We have already installed
an experimental installation near our capital city Dhaka and found enthusiasm to the people and
incorporated the finding in our system and perusing for a pilot for 10 of our system, if successful,
we’ll have more data from 430 users. And by accommodating those data, we shall be able to
develop a foolproof Community Solar System – CSS. Our brand name is: SUN’NRG
BU S I NE S S:
We are promoting the concept that our SUN’NRG brand CSS would be an Income
Generating Activity for Village People. Before selling any system, we shall impart appropriate
training for installation and maintenance. We incorporated system such a way that people could
take it as DIY. The CSS cost-effective, quiet, attractive, safe, and reliable, with only minimal
maintenance required over their long operational life. No extra space will be needed for CSS
installation. It could be placed in the living room of the station owner/operator. The System is
suitable for far-flung areas, char areas, off-grid areas, cluster village, market places, etc. which
have no plan for electrification in future or near future. CSS would be the right choice for the
community and the right choice for the environment.
Bangladesh is a country of 140 million people in an area of only 147,570 sq. km. About 75% of the
population lives in rural areas and only about 32% have access to electricity. Experts are predicting
an electricity requirement of 21,450 MW in the year 2010 against present 4920 MW. Data on current
electricity consumption show that 43% of our electricity is being used for domestic purpose. Also
80% of peak-hour load is due to illumination. CSS would provide lumen [light] to households and
thereby influence peak-hour load. It would be no wonder why so many operators are making the
move to SUN’NRG Brand CSS in near future.

DE V EL O PM E NT :
CSS is basically a maintenance-free operation and not laborious. Before delivery, we’ll impart
training to the Operators, help installation and provide call-on services. CSS will be suitable for
women entrepreneur, which will empower women, rationalize gender-equity. CSS will extend
working hours for the users, thus will directly contribute to national GDP of the user’s country and
influence on poverty and hunger.
CRITERION OF MGD:
Poverty & Hunger: CSS is one of the few business concept, where only an investment of around US$
1,200 will create an Employment Opportunity. CSS will contribute internal circulation of money, as
operator will spend the earned money on the society he lives, supplier will earn money by
supplying inputs, beneficiaries will also contributes in internal money circulation.
Gender Equity: CSS is most suitable for Women Entrepreneurs, which will have, direct influence on
gender equity and women empowerment.
Environmental Sustainability: Poverty is the greatest threat for environment. Thus any activity that
enhance income generation, influence environment. Traditional electricity generation contributes
to about 98% carbon emission to environment. But CSS is green energy, 1 CSS will reduce 4 MT of
Co2 emissions by replacing Kerosene burned Hurricanes, therefore will have direct positive
influence on the environment.

Though we propose that the piloting support would be utilized
through NGO[s]. In future, Answer VDP Bank, Karma
Sangsthan Bank, Basic Bank, etc. may also be explored,
because they are also players in rural micro-credit.
Ten Pilots will enable us to get data from 430 consumers, which is a
considerable sample size.

CSS will be an IGA – income generating activity for rural peoples, where there is no grid electricity.
Consumer will pay fee on weekly or monthly basis. Having 100% own investment, Operator will earn
Tk. 4,200.00. Those who will take micro-credit will earn less: e.g. @ 5% Interest Loan Operators will
earn 2,334.00 and @ 9% Interest Loan will earn Tk. 2,051.00 per month respectively, besides free-of-
cost illumination of their residence.
WH A T I S CS S :
SUN’NRG Brand CSS is a fee-for-service system for community consumers. It is a PV Solar
Charging Bank with consumer lighting. CSS will give operators the ability to generate their own
electricity from the inexhaustible energy of the sun - with no harmful emissions. CSS is powered with
an 80 Wp PV Panel. PV systems consist of wafers made of silicon, when sunlight hits the wafers, a
chemical reaction occurs, resulting in the release of electricity. Using this solar-electricity, our
custom designed Charge Controller, will Charge / re-Charge Batteries. Each Battery will power
One LED Lamp for One Week. Batteries are of 12V, 7Ah, Gel-Type, Sealed and Maintenance Free,
having de-touchable charging and coupling facility. Lamps are wall-mounted, spot-type with on-
off switch, cover, reflector, LED lighting element and de-touchable coupling facility [with Battery].
One CSS will have 42 Consumer Battery, 1 Battery for Station and 5 Reserve Battery, Total: 48 and
there will be 43 Lamps. No extra space will be needed for CSS installation; it could be placed in the
living room of the station operators. An experimental CSS was installed in Mawna – Gazipur. The
system was found safe, as we used Gel-Type Battery [instead of Lead Acid]. Other findings from the
experiment were also incorporated with the present version of CSS.
SUN-NRGey Bangladesh solicits support for few more piloting of the CSS in rural areas and with rural
marginal people, which will enable us to check people’s acceptance, to examine technical &
economical sustainability, to identify their defects, if any, etc. And then we shall be able to
manufacture a foolproof CSS for Rural Bangladesh or else.
CSS as an IGA is viable even at 9% service charge. But modus operandi for the piloting would be
different. If fund available as donation, then an operator may be chosen from the poorest
segment of the society [socially/physically susceptible], so that this could work as a rehabilitation
project as pilot for us. Alternatively if fund comes under re-imbursement system, then we would
propose to negotiate with the partner[s] a service charge @ 3% with an initial grace period of 6

Our Community Solar System gives operators the ability to generate their own electricity from the

Station for Community Use. This will be functional as fee-for-service basis. They're cost-effective,
quiet, attractive, safe, and reliable, with only minimal maintenance required over their long

room of the station owner/operator. The System is suitable for far-flung areas, char areas, off-grid

01. CHARGE BANK:
The Charge Bank is equipped with: - 80 Wp Photovoltaic Solar Panel, Specially Designed Charge
Controller, 6 Battery 12V, 7Ah [Gel-Type, Sealed, Maintenance Free], Distribution Panel, One LED Lamp
[Spot-Light] along with all necessary attachments and peripherals. PV systems consist of wafers
made of silicon. When sunlight hits the wafers, a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in the release
of electricity. By using this solar electricity, our custom designed Charge Controller, will Charge / re-
Charge, 48 Battery of 12V, 7Ah every-week. One battery will power, one Wall-mounted LED Lamp
[Spot-Light] for One Whole Week [avv. 4 hours per day]. Out of the 48 Batteries, 42 will be distributed
to consumers, 1 will be for the system and rest 5 will remain as stand-by or back-up support. Back-
up support is kept, if there is a rainy day or consumer failed to take charge on the stipulated day.
So the bank will charge 48 Battery, which will supply power to 43 Wall-mounted Spot-Type LED
Lamp [42 consumer + 1 for station]. 5 batteries will remain as reserve. Besides Battery charging, there
will be CellPhone and Torchlight charging facility.
► Solar Panel Warranty : 20 years (manufacturer’s).
► Battery warranty : 06 months (manufacturer’s).
Life expectancy more than 3 - years.
► 12V Charge Controller : 03 years (supplier’s).
► Mounting pole shall be arranged by the Operator at his own cost.
02. CONSUMER LIGHTING:
Under one Central Changing Bank, there will be 42 consumer Lamps [Wall-mounted LED Spot-Light]
with cover, reflector, one Gel-Type Sealed, maintenance free Battery 12V 7Ah, Wire, Switch, etc. All
lamps will be coupled with Batteries [de-touchable for charging]. One 12V 7Ah Battery will power
each Light for One Week [average 4 hours lighting everyday]. One LED Lamp will deliver lumen [light]
equivalent to 6 Nos. of Kerosene burned traditional Hurricane [more lumen data on separate sheet].
Under the lamp the user will be able to perform their household activities like reading, domestic
work and other commercial activities, etc.
Community / Consumer will charge their Battery, once a week. Community / Consumer will pay
weekly. The Cost will content: Rent for Lamp and Fee for Charging or Down Payment for Lamp,
Rent for Lamp and Fee for Charging, depending on the types of financing.
► Battery Warranty : 06 (Six) months. Life expectancy more than 3 - years.
► Lamp Warranty : Conditional
in future we’ll work on two types of light: lamp [spot-light] and moveable hand lantern.
BENEFITS OF CSS :
► The community / consumer [mass rural marginal people] will pay less money then
Kerosene. But will get better lumen.
► Direct influence on education of children.
► Extension of working hours, and more extra earnings for consumers.
► Own financed operator will earn Net Tk. 3,700 per Month after keeping a
compulsory deposit of Tk. 500 per month, besides free-of-cost illumination of her/his
► Operators, those who will take micro-credit will earn less. Here @ 5% interest they will
earn Net Tk. 2,000.00 after a compulsory reserve/savings of Tk. 334.00 per month
and @ 9% interest Operator will earn Net Tk. 1,800.00 per month after a compulsory
reserve/savings of Tk. 251.00. All Operators will enjoy free-of-cost illumination of their
► CSS could be an additional IGA, because, less time attention is required. Female
members of the community will be encouraged to take the IGA, which will have
direct influence on women empowerment, gender equity and ability to serve.
► Operators need to keep a mandatory reserve. Though investment back-up, but
operator will have leverage to use this money / savings, to mitigate any
emergency, if arises or investment in any other IGA. It will work as a security shield.
► Operator will get free lighting for own house-hold.
► There will be less Co2 emission in the environment.
► With the increase in the price of petroleum in international market, the price of
Kerosene has been increasing continuously and G-o-B is paying subsidy. CSS will
provide illumination at reduce price. After recovery of investment, operator will
even be able to reduce more prices.
► When CSS will illuminate households, the access of costly electricity could be
diverted to industry, irrigation, commercial uses, etc. means more productive use.
► CSS has facility for CellPhone charging. This will facilitate, rural people enjoy the
benefit of CelPhone and the operator will have extra earning, if s/he runs own
CellPhone business or only by providing charging facility of CellPhone Batteries.
► CSS will have torchlight charging facility, this will ensure personal security.
POTENTIAL USERS :
Basically Solar Home System - SHS is the option for individuals. Another is fee-for-service
basis for community consumers or called the Community Solar System - CSS. There are
many rural market places, cluster village in Bangladesh, relying on in-efficient and
expensive fossil fuel based lighting [generator]. For this sort of multiple user clusters,
photovoltaic- PV based electricity [micro-utility] is a motivating option to extend quality
energy and better service. Here the users will use the facility on fee-for-service basis and
pay tariff on daily / weekly or monthly basis. REB - rural electrification board through their 70
PBS - palli biddut samities reached 44,224 Villages and gave 5,175,322 domestic connections
up to 2005 [ref. REB Website]. According to Statistical Year Book - 2001 there are 25,362,321
Household in Bangladesh with average population of 4.8 persons. So the gap is huge.

While selecting area, we shall take into consideration of these points. Initially we’ll have
target to reach Solar Power to those households, who are not presently enjoying grid
electricity. On our second phase, we shall consider to convince REB Domestic Users to
switched-on to Solar Power and the saved grid-electricity could be diverted to other
productive sector like: irrigation, industry, commercial, etc. The final selection of location
will be done after consultation with Fund Provider.
PROSHIKA, BIKAS Bangladesh, Prokaushali Sangshad Limited - PSL, BRIDGE, TMSS, Grameen
Sakti, DEEP, Waste Concern, PowerCell, Padokkep, BASRC, etc. All of them showed
interest, to work with us. Our earlier experiment was done in-collaboration with PROSHIKA.
PSL is buying our Lamps. For DEEP we shall install another experimental CSS soon in
northern Bangladesh. The final selection of NGO will be done after consultation with Fund
As an example, we like to mention that presently PROSHIKA is active in 30,000 Villages in
Bangladesh. Out of these 30,000 there are 10,000 Villages, where there is no grid-
electricity. PROSHIKA has a vision to install at least 10 Nos. of CSS in each Village means
100,000 CSS under which there will be 42,000,000 Consumer Lightings. If SUN-NRGey could
prove CSS as a full-proof system it will and a huge population to cater to.
