Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain. Picasso learned to draw before he could talk. In his mid-teens he could draw with photographic accuracy. An innovator of many artistic styles, Picasso was also a prolific artist. He produced an estimated 50,000 works during his lifetime. Many of his paintings were portraits of people. When his best friend died in 1901, Picasso began to paint people who looked lonely and sad. This period was called his Blue Period because he used a lot of blues. From then on, his paintings often illustrated his own life--just like a diary. Picasso fell in love and a happier color started showing up in his painting. This was the beginning of his Rose Period. Cubism was the next style of painting that Picasso developed and made famous. When Picasso first began painting in this style, people and objects looked as though they had been broken up into little cubes. As Picasso continued to develop Cubism, the shapes became more colorful and flatter looking. Mother and Child, a painting in our text book, is in the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland. The subject of Mother and Child was a recurrent theme for Picasso. In this painting, Picasso used the paintbrush and black oil paint to draw a variety of lines and shapes. In 1937 during a civil war in Spain, the small town of Guernica was destroyed by bombs. Picasso was very angry because thousands of innocent people were killed and injured. Picasso painted a picture to express his feelings. He named the picture Guernica. Name _____________________________________________ Room # ____________ Pablo Picasso 1.
