Mike Ashman
Head Coach
12th year
Widely regarded as one of the top players in Cal Poly Pomona history, Mike Ashman has also made his mark as a Bronco coach. Ashman enters his 12th year as the Cal Poly Pomona head coach and has carried on the fine tradition of the Bronco baseball program. Ashman played for Hall of Fame coach John Scolinos in the 1980 and ’81 seasons and was a key member of the 1980 NCAA Division II championship squad. Ashman led the Broncos to a California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division championship in 2005 and an appearance in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time since 2001. The Broncos were 25-14 in conference play, which was their best winning percentage in CCAA play since 1985. Cal Poly Pomona also excelled defensively last season and had the best fielding percentage in the NCAA Division II (.972). The Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 30-23. This past season, the Broncos struggled through an injury-plagued campaign and finished with a 20-31 record. That was just the second non-winning season since 1998. Ashman has guided the Broncos to 30 or more victories in four of the past seven seasons and led the team to winning records in six of the past eight years. Cal Poly Pomona had never recorded three straight 30-win seasons and hadn’t posted four consecutive winning seasons since 1970 before the recent runs under Ashman. Ashman remains dedicated to maintaining the Broncos’ standing as one of the conference’s top teams and to returning Cal Poly Pomona to national prominence. He is committed to the philosophies and ideals taught to him by Scolinos and strives to give the university, alumni and community a program to rally around. The Broncos bounced back from an uncharacteristic 15-39 season in 2003 and were one of the nation’s most improved teams in 2004. Cal Poly Pomona won 11 more games in 2004 and recorded a winning record with a 26-25-2 mark. In 2002, the Broncos recorded a 31-22-1 record and just missed qualifying for the CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight season. Ashman led the Broncos to a 31-24 record in 2001, including a 23-17 conference mark that qualified Cal Poly Pomona for the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament. Five players from that squad were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Cal Poly Pomona also qualified for the conference tournament in 2000 with a 24-15 conference mark. Fifteen Broncos have been drafted since Ashman became the head coach in 1996 and several others have signed with professional baseball teams. Ashman was also a batting practice pitcher for the 2002 World Series champion Anaheim Angels and was on hand when the Angels won the first championship in the franchise’s history. That spring, the Broncos faced the Angels in an exhibition game at the Angels’ spring training complex in Tempe, Ariz. Before becoming Cal Poly Pomona’s head coach, Ashman spent the 1995 season with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, where his primary responsibility was as the team’s hitting coach. In his one season in Lincoln, the Cornhuskers raised their team batting average from .265 to .323. He also helped develop Darin Erstad into the No. 1 pick in the 1995 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Erstad has remained close with Ashman and is a frequent visitor to Cal Poly Pomona. Erstad has participated in a youth clinic at the university for the past five years. Prior to going to Nebraska, Ashman served for five seasons as an assistant coach at Riverside Community College under former Bronco assistant coach and standout player Dennis Rogers. During his time at RCC, the Tigers compiled a 160-74 record and advanced to the California State Junior College Regionals every season. RCC had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the state in 1990 and 1991. As a player at Cal Poly Pomona, Ashman led the 1980 squad to the national championship and earned All-America honors in the process. He batted .365 that season with 95 hits and 56 RBI. He went on to play six seasons of professional baseball in the Oakland Athletics’ and Pittsburgh Pirates’ organizations. Ashman also played for the U.S. Olympic Team in World Cup games in Japan. Ashman is a product of the Inland Empire and competed for Bloomington High School and San Bernardino Valley College. At Bloomington, he was an all-San Andreas League first-team selection for two years. His team was the 1975 CIF runner-up. Ashman graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and obtained his Master’s Degree in management from National University in San Diego. He resides in Rancho Cucamonga with his wife, Jill, and has three children, daughters Delaney and Kylie and son Zachary.

A former centerfielder for Cal Poly Pomona, Ramos begins the fourth year of his third stint as a member of the Bronco coaching staff. He will begin his 24th year overall coaching the Broncos. He will be coaching the outfielders and also baserunning. Ramos played for the Broncos in 1970-71 and then began a coaching career that has included time at Mt. San Antonio College, Fullerton Junior College and Esperanza High School. Ramos coached for Cal Poly Pomona from 1972-76 and then went to Mt. SAC for one season. He became the head coach at Esperanza for three seasons from 1978-80 before returning to Cal Poly Pomona, where he stayed for the next 15 years. He was then an assistant coach at Mt. SAC again from 1996-2000 and went to Fullerton Junior College from 2000-03. Ramos has also been a Major League Baseball envoy coach for eight years and has gone to Australia, New Zealand, Mongolia, China, Singapore, Malasia and the Phillipines putting on clinics and helping develop the game of baseball. He has been married to wife Liza for 31 years and the couple has a son, Jason and a daughter, Gina.
Bill Thomas
Assistant Coach 3rd Year
A former player at Pepperdine University, Thomas begins his third season with the Cal Poly Pomona coaching staff. Thomas will be working with the Bronco infielders and hitters. Thomas received the Major League Baseball Envoy “Coach of the Year award in 2006 for his work in Cambodia and Thailand. Thomas has been a member of the program for the past six summers and has helped develop baseball in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Cambodia and Thailand. He is expecting to travel again next summer to Vietnam and, for the first time, China. Thomas came to Cal Poly Pomona from Fullerton Community College, where he was an assistant coach for six years. His background in baseball includes a successful playing career. He earned all-conference honors two years in a row at Los Angeles City College, where he helped the team win the conference. He then went on to Pepperdine, where he played second base and shortstop for two years. Thomas was an independent insurance agent and was in the business for 20 years. He decided to change careers and has been a special education teacher at Loara High School for the past 12 years. Thomas is the father of two children, Cassie, 27 and Zach, 24. With a construction background, he enjoys buying and remodeling houses. He also likes to fish in his spare time.
Jarrod Allen
Assistant Coach 2nd Year
After an impressive two-year playing career at Cal Poly Pomona, Allen returns for his second year with the Bronco coaching staff. Allen earned All-CCAA honorable mention in 2005 after hitting .329 with a team-high five home runs and 33 runs batted in. Allen shared the team lead in home runs and runs batted in and also led the team in runs scored (39) and stolen bases (12). He also made only one error in the outfield in 60 chances. Allen is also a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and will be leaving during the season to continue training to be a pilot. He says his main reason for choosing this career path is that his father flew in the Navy for 26 years and has inspired him to follow in his footsteps. Allen completed his bachelor’s degree in business at Cal Poly Pomona.

Brian Swanson
Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson joined Cal Poly Pomona as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on May 31, 2005 and became the Broncos’ seventh director since 1974 when intercollegiate athletics became an official department of the university. His first year on the job saw many firsts. Under Swanson’s leadership, the department was awarded its largest private grant ever from the US Soccer Foundation for construction of an all-weather field, secured its largest corporate partnership, netted the largest profit from the Bronco Golf Classic, achieved the highest cumulative student-athlete grade point average and created the Bronco Buddies, an athletics/community outreach program. Cal Poly Pomona also hosted the NCAA West Regional and NCAA National Championships for men’s and women’s cross country in November of 2005 and Swanson served as President of the CCAA. Additionally, Swanson split the soccer coaching position and hired a new women’s soccer coach, revised the athletic endowment program, increased the number and size of athletic endowment, oversaw on-line media guides, roster links and student-athlete handbook, devised new internal reporting systems, increased scholarship and operational budgets and added assistant coaches. The Bronco athletic teams were extremely successful as six of 12 programs competed in the NCAA postseason. Volleyball had its most successful season in the program’s history and claimed a share of its first California Collegiate Athletic Association championship since 1990. Facility improvements were made at all venues. The Kellogg Tennis Complex had all 10 courts completely resurfaced and a new tennis office was constructed. In Kellogg Gym, the floor was refinished and the locker rooms were upgraded. Scolinos Field saw improvements in the playing surface, new screens and netting and painted dugouts. Prior to Cal Poly Pomona, Swanson was the Associate Athletics Director at Cal State L.A., where he was directly responsible for the supervision, direction and evaluation of sports programs. He was also in charge of developing and maintaining the department’s corporate sponsorships and fund-raising efforts as well as supervising special projects and events, game management and game-day operations. While at Cal State L.A., Swanson increased the division’s overall external support 112 percent over five years and helped start and administer the first five athletic endowments in school history. He also handled marketing and promotions and served on the executive committee of the Billie Jean King and Friends, Honoring Joe Shapiro event, which has raised more than $1,000,000 for athletic scholarships at Cal State L.A. Before working at Cal State L.A., Swanson spent six years at Cal State Northridge. During his time with the Matadors, Swanson was the Assistant Director for External Affairs. He developed the Matador Business Associates, which increased corporate and individual partnerships by 380 percent and also coordinated the passage of the successful athletics fee referendum, which generated $1.6 million for 20 sports programs at Cal State Northridge. He was also the tournament director for the 1997 Big Sky Women’s Volleyball Championships and the 1996 American West Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Swanson created the season ticket campaign and priority seating program in football and basketball at Cal State Northridge. In addition, he oversaw ticket operations and football scheduling and served as the finance chair for the Fourth of July San Fernando Valley Fireworks Spectacular. Swanson earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Western Illinois University and his bachelor’s degree in business administration-finance from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University). Swanson and his wife, Julie, reside in Irvine.

Cal Poly floats have won many major awards and become internationally known for universal humor, complicated animation, a high degree of ingenuity and clever construction. Another feature unique to the Cal Poly Pomona campus is the Arabian Horse Center. The horse center is the site for monthly horse shows, originated by W.K. Kellogg, and now in the 80th year of presentation. Shows are open to the public on the first Sunday afternoon of each month, beginning in October and ending in June.
