Welcome to Spain where the weather is pleasant most of the year round and the culture is rich with tradition. I am John C. Gurchik, Site Manager for Rota, Spain. Early in my stay I learned that the majority of Spaniards have a different perspective than many Americans in regards to work. Spanish work to live, not live to work. With that thought in mind, Spain is a place to relax and enjoy life to the fullest. I am sure that being located on the Atlantic and near the Mediterranean will provide the motivation to do both. The weather here is very pleasant. On most winter days the temperature ranges between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other hand, the spring and summer seasons can be very humid and hot. During your visit, a trip to the beach would be warranted especially while grading papers, reading a good book, or having lunch. The Spaniards have great food including fresh seafood and their famous paella dish. While you are here, be sure to visit some of the local Spanish restaurants and enjoy one of the most important aspects of their culture…the food. The HR program has been a great success since its inception in 1998. The students bring their diverse backgrounds, positive attitudes, and many experiences, which is a great combination for the dynamic structure and quality of the Masters of Human Relations program. I am confident your stay here in Spain will be full of adventure and excitement. Please let me know if I may be of any assistance. I will try my best to ensure your stay in Rota is a pleasant one. Sincerely, John Charles Gurchik, MHR Site Manager, Rota 3 Welcome to Rota Addresses Civilian Address University of Oklahoma Navy Campus Apartado 33 Base Naval Rota, Cadiz 11000 The University of Oklahoma PSC 819, Box 54 FPO AE 09645 011-34-956-82-2799 00-34- 956-82-2799 956-82-2799 956-82-2799 727-2799 APO Address (US Domestic Mail) Office Phone Numbers From a commercial/ civilian phone From United States From other European countries In Spain outside Rota In Rota Throughout Europe aprota@ou.edu Receive/ Send CIV (from the U.S.) DSN 727-2994 John Charles Gurchik – home phone From a military/DSN phone E-mail FAX 011-34-956-82-2994 From USA: (see pre-travel document) From Europe: (see pre-travel document) In Spain outside Rota: (see pre-travel document) Absolute Emergency Only: (see pre-travel document) US Federal Holidays Closed Civ 956-82-2711 DSN 727-2711 Phone 405-325-0504 Fax 405-325-5709 Contacts: Dr. Peggy Lerner, Director Ms. Mary Keller Ms. Rosemary Petrunyak Tel: (from US) 011-49-6221-768118 FAX: (49) 6221-768945 Email : apeudirector@ou.edu apeuprograms@ou.edu apeuadmin@ou.edu Home : (see pre-travel document), Lerner Site Manager OU Office Hours Education Services Officer (ESO) Advanced Programs Site Coordinator European Contract Support Office Monday-Friday 1100-1700 M,T, Th, F 0900-1500 W Lee “Pete” Peters Barbara McCall Mailing Address: The University of Oklahoma Attn: (enter name) CMR 419, Box 1634 APO AE 09102 Street Address: The University of Oklahoma Sickingenstrasse 1A 69126 Heidelberg, Germany 4 Arrival at Jerez Airport DISEMBARKATION All patrons must walk to the terminal when the plane taxis on the runway. Departure from Jerez Airport ARRIVAL AT AIRPORT Most professors leave on 705 am flight for Jerez (XRY) to Madrid Barajas (MAD). If this is the case, the professor will take a taxi from the Gateway Inn. Taxi should be called at about 0515, the number is 956 82 2929 to x2929 from the base phone. Taxi stand is located within 5 minutes of the lodging facility. Taxi costs approximately 50 Euros and the drive is approximately one half hour. The Jerez airport does not open its doors until 0600 so there is no reason to get there too early. CHECK IN Information boards posted in the Departure Hall indicate the counter numbers for each airline. US carriers conduct a security interview with each passenger before taking luggage and issuing a boarding card. Have your ticket and passport ready. The most common airline is Iberia for international travel/ Please be advised of the new regulations for carry on luggage and liquids in Europe. Check the Department of State website http://travel.state.gov for up to date regulations and restrictions. PASSPORT CONTROL Follow the signs to the Departure Gate noted on your boarding card. If you check in before a gate is assigned, refer to the departure boards in the Departure Hall. Unless you are traveling to another destination in Spain, you will go through passport control. SECURITY You will go through a security control area. Place all of your belongings on the conveyor belt for the Xray. A security agent will use a metal detector and hand search. Notify the agent if you have a heart pace maker. BOARDING Arrive at the gate 1 hour or more before your flight’s departure time. Have your boarding card ready. For some flights, you will board directly onto the plane; for others, you will take a bus to the plane. 13 Rota and Spain on the World Wide Web https://www.rota.navy.mil/navsta/ - Rota military site http://www.andalucia.com/cities/jerez.htm - Jerez tourist site http://www.andalucia.com/province/cadiz/home.htm - Province of Cadiz http://www.andalucia.com/travel/airports/jerez.htm - Jerez airport http://www.travelinginspain.com/ - tourist sites, Spain travel http://www.in-spain.info/ http://www.oanda.com/convert/fxhistory - currency exchange info 14
