                    WELCOME SWIMMERS AND PARENTS

The Redding Swim Team invites you to join our swimming family. The Redding Swim
Team is one of 53 teams in Northern California, and is a member of United States
Swimming, a national organization with over 750,000 athletes across the country.

Serving Shasta County since 1952, our swim team provides four programs: Redding
Aqua Ducks (RAD), Swim America, Redding Summer Ducks, and Redding Adult
Swimming. These programs are instructional and educational for people of all ages.
Swimmers learn proper swimming techniques, importance of physical fitness, and the
rewards of commitment.

The objective of the Redding Swim Team is to provide physical, emotional and social
growth of swimmers through training and competition. Swimmers learn the value of hard
work and the importance of good sportsmanship. The RAD coaching staff provides an
atmosphere where each individual swimmer has the opportunity to reach their full
potential by instilling a sense of confidence and self-esteem.

ABOVE ALL, RAD SWIMMERS LEARN THAT COMPETITIVE SWIMMING IS FUN!

                                    RAD’S TEAM STRUCTURE
The focus of the Redding Swim Team is the long-term development of each athlete. Our program covers
swimmers from the very beginning levels of learning to swim to the elite athlete competing at the National
level. Our groups overlap in age and ability to accommodate each swimmer‟s need.
Swimmers are placed into groups based upon their desire, ability and age (maturity) as determined by
the coach and the athlete.

The goal of the Redding Swim Team is to meet the needs of all swimmers and to ensure each participant
receives the attention they deserve. The criteria for each level are as follows:

GREEN GROUP

This is our Swim America Program (learn to swim). Our goal is to develop confidence in the water so
that your child can learn to swim quickly. It is a development school for participants. Swimmers in this
group are 3 years of age and older. Coach to student ratio is typically 1 to 5.
BRONZE GROUP

This is an introductory group with an emphasis on stroke mechanics, turns and start techniques. At
this level, concentration will be on the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes, and the enjoyment
of swimming while improving swimming skills.
SILVER GROUP
This level‟s emphasis is stroke skills, turns and start techniques. This group is an introduction to
competitive swimming. The emphasis of this group is learning all four of the competitive strokes and
turn techniques. Although competing in swim meets is not required, practices are designed to help the
swimmers meet their competitive goals
GOLD TEAM
Swimmers should be proficient in all four competitive strokes, turns, and techniques. This group is for
swimmers interested in preparing for competition, and who are willing and capable of handling
progressive workouts. Stroke skills and interval training will be stressed for these swimmers. Swim
meet participation is highly encouraged.
PLATINUM GROUP
This group is a stepping-stone for the National Team. Swimmers in this group focus on improving their
competitive proficiency and performance. The emphasis is stroke skills and interval swim training.
Swim meets are encouraged for these participants. This group focuses primarily on proper technique of
the four competitive strokes, starts and turns, and improving skills and conditioning for the sport of
swimming.
NATIONAL TEAM
This level requires a serious commitment to the sport of swimming. The emphasis will be on extensive
training for a high level of competition. It is offered to swimmers who are willing and capable of handling
progressive workouts. This group will participate in morning workouts and weekly weight room
sessions.
MASTERS
This is a group of adults who are interested in swimming as part of their physical fitness program. We can meet
the needs of the Tri Athlete or someone looking for low impact physical fitness. The staff will provide workouts for
swimmers, or they can lap swim on their own. This group‟s emphasis is on meeting the needs of its participants.
            RAD’S GROUP PRE-REQUISITES AND GUIDELINES

The following guidelines are used by the RAD Coaching Staff when assigning a swimmer to a
specific group. In order to provide a well-rounded program for all the participants we offer five swim
levels. Bronze swimmers are considered an introductory group; Silver swimmers are in a transitional
group preparing them for the Gold Team. Gold swimmers are working on advanced training. The
Platinum Group is a group for kids that play other sports and/or a transitional group for the National
Team. The National Team swimmers are the top group of the Redding Swim Team. Swimmers are
placed into groups based upon their desire, ability and age (maturity). Each child will be placed into the
group that best suits their ability as determined by the coach and the athlete.

                                          PARENT’S ROLE
The parent role is an extremely important one. Ongoing support and encouragement of your child, as
well as the following guidelines will play a key role in your child‟s success in his/her personal goals as a
swimmer, and as a member of the Redding Swim Team.
1. Parents are to make every effort to have their child(ren) at all practices. Swimmers should be at
the pool and ready to begin practice at their scheduled workout time.

2. Parents are to keep their child(ren) off the pool deck until their designated swim time.

3. Parents are to pick up their child(ren) within fifteen minutes of the end of practice or swim event.

4. Parents are not to interrupt the Coach during the scheduled practice time. Conversations with the
coaches can be scheduled before or after scheduled practice times.

5. Any problems, concerns and/or issues should be directed to your child‟s immediate coach. If
unable to address the issue with the coach, or if the coach is unable to address/resolve, you may
contact the Head Coach and/or the President of the Board of Directors.

6. Parental support of the coaching staff is necessary for a positive and successful working
relationship. Parents are discouraged from offering technical and critical advice regarding stroke
technique, race strategy, training, and pre-race/post-race with their child(ren). Related questions
should be addressed directly with the Coach.

7. Medical conditions relating to your child(ren) should be addressed with his/her Coach. Every
effort will be made to accommodate any medical conditions.

8. Parents are expected to attend swim team meetings, as scheduled.

9. Parents are encouraged to monitor the safety/behavior in the locker rooms and on the pool deck
and act appropriately; addressing any issues with a Coach.

10. Parents are required to participate and assist with swim meets, fundraising and social activities.
Each family is required to complete a minimum of 35 hours of volunteer service at Team
functions. A list of volunteer opportunities can be found in the Team Registration Packet.

                                OUR COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Our Coaching philosophy views swimming as a planned progression of the sport.
We do not scribe to a quick fix approach; it is a disservice to the children in the long term.
1. The RAD Coaching Staff is professionally trained. They attend clinics regularly to keep
abreast of the latest techniques for training young swimmers.

2. During practice, swimmers are expected to devote their entire attention to the Coaches‟
       instruction.

3. At designated times, swimmers will be expected to work independently. Part of the
learning process is the ability to follow directions and complete a task.

4. Coaches on the pool deck are responsible for instruction as well as the safety of the
       swimmers.
                              CONCERNING COMPETITION
1. Swimmers shall conform to the rules and regulations of Sierra Nevada Swimming and United
      States Swimming.
2. The Meet Schedule is included in this Handbook. The RAD staff has selected meets that best suit
the needs of our Team and swimmers. Swimmers should only attend meets that are on the Team
Meet Schedule. If a swimmer wishes to attend a meet that is not on the meet schedule, they
should discuss it with their coach.
3. Meets that are not in the schedule. Swimmers must confer with their Coach prior to the event.
Coach will arrange coaching supervision as directed by United States Swimming rules
4. Swimmers are required to wear the team uniform at all swim meets. The team uniform
consists of a solid navy blue suit with the swim team logo printed on it, and a swim team
cap. Caps may be purchased from a designated parent or coach, suits and other team
apparel may be ordered through the Team Store (order forms at pool).
5. Swimmers shall always show up at the assigned time as given by their Coach. Being on
time ensures a proper warm-up and is best for the overall good of the team.
6. Swimmers can consult with their Coach when entering events for a swim meet. If a
swimmer wants to scratch an event, they must talk to their coach first.
7. Swimmers should always be a positive influence. They should conduct themselves in a
manner of good sportsmanship, and present a positive image of themselves and our
      TEAM at all times.
8. When traveling, swimmers will act in a well-mannered and self-disciplined way. Swimmers
need to remember that they also represent their team.
9. Regarding relays, swimmers should always check with their Coach prior to leaving the
meet. This is particularly true of larger, more important meets.
10. When in doubt, check with a coach.

                                     PRACTICE RULES
1. Enter water feet first, unless otherwise directed by the Coach.
2. Do not stop during the warm-up portion.
3. Utilize race turns at all times, after swimmer has mastered the turn.
4. Do not interfere with another swimmer‟s practice.
5. Return all pool gear to its proper place.
6. Be mindful of how your actions affect the morale and/or safety of others.
7. Listen and be attentive during practice; do not disrupt the class.
8. Follow the “rules of the road” to ensure your safety and the safety of others in your lane.
9. Treat your teammates, coaches, parents, officials, and members of other swim teams with the
greatest respect, and conduct yourself appropriately.
10. Swimmers at all times should maintain a buddy system once practice is over, traveling to and
from dry land areas, utilizing the locker rooms, and/or participating at swim meets. Swimmers
under the age of 13 must also maintain a buddy system when leaving the pool deck area for any
reason during practice. If a swimmer under the age of 13 must leave prior to the conclusion of
practice for family reasons the child‟s parent, grand parent, and or adult family member must
check in with the child‟s coach before the swimmer will be dismissed from practice.
                                          GOAL SETTING
Goal setting can be one of the greatest tools for personal motivation; however, goals must be S.M.A.R.T.:
Specific, Meaningful, Affirmed, Realistic, and Traceable.

SPECIFIC means just that. Goals should be stated with a concrete time to be achieved as well as when
you plan on attaining that time. For example, I want to swim a 1:06 in the 100 Fly by January 1. Then
focus at practice on your desired goal times.

MEANINGFUL means setting goals that are personal and purposeful to you. The goals you set must be
your own, not your mom‟s or your dad‟s or your coach‟s, but yours.

AFFIRMED means confirming your goals by firmly planting them in your heart and soul. Write your goals
out and place them on the refrigerator, in your locker, on the ceiling at home or anywhere else you will
see them daily. Convince yourself that you can achieve them.

REALISTIC means setting goals that are achievable by you within the time frame you or your coach have
established. It is great to have high expectations, but goals must be attainable or you will not experience
success, and swimming may not be fun anymore. Your coach can help you set challenging, but realistic
goals.

TRACEABLE means being able to chart your progress on the way to a season or yearly goal. Setting
short-term goals helps establish a means of monitoring your achievement along the way. This feeling of
accomplishment will help motivate you in obtaining your ultimate goal. BELIEVE IT! VISUALIZE IT!
DO IT!

                                             DIET GUIDE

CARBOHYDRATES: Needed to fuel the body for proper growth and development (60% of daily diet).
Squash, veggies, pasta, potatoes, rice, breads (whole wheat), and beans are good sources of
carbohydrates.

PROTEINS: Necessary for muscular and structural development (25% of daily diet). Foods such as
chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, milk, and cottage cheese are great proteins.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS: Continues the proper chemical balance within the body (15% of daily diet).
Bananas, oranges, apples, green vegetables, and yellow vegetables contain numerous vitamins and
minerals.

FATS: Necessary for proper enzymatic processes. Limited amounts are suggested. Most commonly
found in butter, cheese, jellies, etc.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PRE-MEET COMPETITION MEAL: Four days prior to competition, increase your
carbohydrate intake, decrease your fats, and increase fluid intake.

DAY OF THE MEET: Include carbohydrates, fluids, and fruits.

FOODS THAT CONTAIN HIGH LEVELS OF PROCESSED SUGARS SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
(EX: SODA, CANDY, CAKES, and ICE CREAM).
HOW TO SEND YOUR CHILD TO A SWIM MEET

The following information may be useful to parents and swimmers when entering a U.S.A. swim meet.
Follow each step carefully in order to assure your swimmer‟s admittance into the swim meet. For those
who have never been involved with U.S.A., this meet entry procedure may be quite different from anything
you have seen before, so please pay close attention to the following.

1. By signing your swimmer up with our Team, you have also registered with United States of America
Swimming. This organization provides your swimmer with their insurance - a necessary item.

2. Meet sheets are available from your swimmers coach. The Meet Sheet explains everything you
need to know about that particular swim meet. For example: date, time and location of meet,
events offered, number of events a swimmer can enter, surcharges, event fees, etc.

3. Read the fact sheet, paying close attention to the ENTRY DEADLINE. Memorize this deadline and
make sure you send your entries in before this date. Most meet directors will not accept any entries
after this date. If the Meet Sheet indicates a limited number of swimmers, be sure to get your entry
in quickly to ensure a spot in the meet.

4. Choose events. Involving the swimmer in this entry process is very beneficial. It provides the
swimmer with a very important sense of “being in charge” of his/her own athletic performance.
Parents: please do not push your swimmer into events they definitely do not want to swim. This
can make your swimmer lose interest in the sport, and, at worst, the swimmer can begin to resent
you for interfering. Leave this kind of coaxing up to your coach.

5. Fill out the Consolidated Entry Card (usually attached to the meet sheet). On this form, you will be
required to fill in the swimmer‟s name, address, phone, age, and USA registration number. (If you
have not received your USA registration number, please write in “applied” or “pending”), club name
(Redding Swim Team), and the Club Code (RAD). Do not exceed the limit of events per day. You
must also acknowledge which events your swimmer wishes to enter by coding the event numbers
with submitted best times for those events. If the swimmer does not have a time in a certain event,
then they must enter a “NT” (no time) in the space provided.

6. Check to see if your swimmer‟s times qualify for the event chosen. Some swim meets put time
limits on the events offered. If your swimmer‟s times are faster than the limit, they can enter that
event. If the time is slower than the limit, they cannot enter that event.

7. Make a check payable to the correct person, club or association for the amount of the pool
surcharge and the entry fees combined.

8. Mail the entry card and the check to the designated address on the meet sheet. Make sure to mail
        the entries by the deadline.

9. If you want confirmation that your entry was received, send a self-addressed post card along with
        the entry.

10. Relays will be scheduled by the coaches the day of the meet. Swimmers will be informed of any
        relay events at the meet.

to swim.
Age Group Open Meets: These are large area swim meets in which any swimmer may participate unless there are
stated limitations.
Junior Olympics Championships: This meet is held twice a year. During the spring this meet is 14 &under with a
„BB‟ time standard or to qualify. The summer meet is open to all swimmers that have met the time standard set
earlier in the year.
Spring is swam yards and summer is meters.
Dual Meets: Dual meets are designed to provide competition between Redding Swim Team and one other
swim team. Dual meets usually last 2-3 hours.
“Q” Meets: These meets are held at key times in the year to give kids an opportunity to qualify for higher-
level competition.
Far Westerns: This meet is the top age group meet in Northern California. Specific time standards must be
met in order to qualify for this meet.
Western Zones: This meet is a Western States Regional meet for age group swimmers. Swimmers must
have met the minimum time standards and qualified for the Sierra All Star Team.
Sectional Championships: This meet is the first meet at the National level. Specific time standards must be
achieved and swimmers represent the top five percent in the Nation.
                             COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

We have a number of communication systems in place to ensure that everyone is up-to-date on
important Team information such as schedules, deadlines, and activities. The following sources are used
to promote effective communication between the parent, coach and swimmer.

Team Newsletter
The Team Newsletter called “The Ducky Digest”, contains updates on each group, schedules, general
announcements, as well as, swimmer/parent educational items.

E-Mail Database
We use an e-mail database to maintain communication with our members. Some information is handed
to the swimmers and we try to follow-up with an e-mail of the handouts to the parents. Please fill out the
portion below and return it to the RAD Mailbox as soon as possible so we may maintain accurate
information.

                                   BECOMING AN OFFICIAL
Parents are needed to volunteer as USA officials for the Team. It is easy to become an
official and the team will even pay for the volunteer‟s first USA certification once you
become certified. The volunteer needs to attend one four-hour clinic, and participate in
on-the-deck training at meets. If you are interested in becoming an official, please notify
your child‟s coach or the team office.

                                        CREDIT VOUCHER
As an incentive, RAD will give a $10.00 credit voucher to any family that refers a “new member”
to the team. A “new member” is not a returning member or someone who is already
participating with one of our associated programs. The “new member” must pay for their first
month before a credit voucher will be issued.
                               SWIMMER’S RECOGNITION

Swimmer of the Month
Each month a swimmer is chosen from each training group as the Swimmer-of-the-
Month. The award is based upon attitude, attendance and effort at practice and meets.
Each swimmer receives a specialized swim cap in recognition of their achievement. Each
Swimmer-of-the-month will have their name printed in the Team Newsletter.

“A” Medals
When a swimmer achieves an “A” time in an event for the first time, they receive an “A”
Medal. The coaches check the results after each meet and hand out awards afterwards.
At some swim meets, “A” Medals are given directly to the swimmers.

Team Awards Banquet
The Awards Banquet is held at the end of the Summer Season. Every swimmer is
awarded for their participation (three to six month award, nine month award, and twelve
month award). Each swimmer receives an award as well as recognition in the newsletter
for their participation.

National Swimmer Award
Swimmers who achieve a National Reportable Time in one or more events receive a
Team Award and a certificate from United States Swimming and Sierra Nevada
Swimming. The swimmer is honored in the Newsletter and in the local paper for this
outstanding accomplishment.

Team Records
Team records are updated every September, in conjunction with the National and LSC
records. Swimmers who break a Team Record will be rewarded. Official records are
kept for all nationally recognized events, and 8-under events recognized by the LSC.

Lap-A-Thon
The Lap-A-Thon is a fund-raising event held each spring. Swimmers earn money for the
Team by swimming as many laps as they can in a specific time period. Rewards are
given to the Swimmers who are the top four money raisers at this event.

Golden Duck Award
The Golden Duck Award is an award that any swimmer can win on our team. It‟s an effort
based award. This is a special award based on points earned throughout the year (Sept
2010 – July 2011).

The object is to achieve points. The point structure is based on meet participation; if a
swimmer achieves the points needed for their particular group they win a Golden Duck.
The coaches will determine the maximum points possible for the year, (Sept 2010 – July
2011). In addition, a swimmer can receive bonus points for extra accomplishments.

Only Team swim meets identified for specific groups will be awarded points. If you attend
a non-designated swim meet points will not be awarded
Swimmers may keep tally of points through the year, please be aware that the individual
that is tracking this award has final say in point totals. Point totals will be available for
review by swimmers twice this year, January 30 and May 2, 2011.

                                     VOLUNTEER SERVICE
A staple of the Redding Swim Team is the active participation of parents in their child‟s
team activities. With this in mind, and in an attempt to keep our dues as low as possible, each
family is required to complete 35 hours of volunteer service at Team functions. A listing of the
various volunteer service opportunities are listed in the Registration Packet. For every 5 hours
over the required 35 hours you will receive a ticket for a drawing to be held at the Gala Dinner.
The winner of this drawing will receive three (3) months of free dues. To ensure proper credit,
use the job sign up feature on the Redding Swim Team website prior to the event.

                                       TEAM TRAVEL
Team Travel is a “win-win” situation for parents and swimmers. Team Travel was
developed as an option to help swimmers (13 years and older) get to out-of-town swim
meets at a reasonable cost.

The cost of lodging and transportation is shared equally among the swimmers. Once you
commit to Team Travel you are responsible for the total cost. In some cases we will ask
for a deposit. The average cost is $85-$95 for a two day meet.

How does Team Travel help my child?
Team Travel helps develop camaraderie among the swimmers. A weekend with fellow
swimmers brings them closer together. It also gives the coaches an opportunity to bond
with the swimmers in a different environment.

Are their guidelines for Team Travel?
Yes. Each swimmer and their parent(s) must read and sign the Team Travel Policy prior
to attending. The coaches and chaperones take their responsibility seriously and we
expect our swimmers to do the same.

To attend Team Travel you must inform your child‟s coach prior to the deadline. To keep
the trip affordable, a minimum of eight swimmers is required; the more swimmers that
utilize Team Travel, the lower the cost.
