									STUDENT GUIDE TO COMPLETING ONLINE UCAS
         APPLICATION 2008 -2009

Information you will need to complete the form
      Details of your GCSE results (subject/grade/date/board)
      Details of your sixth form courses (subject/board)
      Details of your current or past employment (company name/dates)
      The universities and courses you wish to apply to. You can only make 5
       choices. These can be amended at anytime before the form is sent. NOTE:
       Remember to choose one or two courses requiring lower grades (as an
       insurance)

Registering with UCAS/Logging on
      Log on to ucas.ac.uk
      Click on the APPLY link
      Click on STUDENT LOGIN, 2009 ENTRY
      Click on the REGISTER button. NOTE: When you log in after registration
       you will use the password and username at the bottom of this page
      Follow the online instructions. You will require the school buzzword which
       is:

                          Buzzword: whickham2009
      You will be asked to choose a password. USE YOUR SCHOOL PASSWORD.
      You should now have a USERNAME and PASSWORD.

RECORD YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD AND KEEP THEM IN A SAFE PLACE

Completing the Application Form

To access your application form you must follow the logging on steps again, but
instead of clicking the register button, enter your PASSWORD and USERNAME.

It is vital that you know record your PERSONAL ID NUMBER, which is in the
middle of the page. UCAS will require this number when dealing with any
queries. Record this and ask your tutor to keep a copy of this number as well.

You are required to complete the following sections:

      Personal Details
      Choices
      Education
      Employment
      Statement

Notice that the status of each section is recorded; informing you of how much of
each section is completed. Staff can also see how much you have completed.
The sections can be completed in any order but it is worth completing t he
PERSONAL DETAILS section first. Your PERSONAL STATEMENT will also require a
great deal of drafting and amending so it is worth doing this in Word before
copying and pasting it into the STATEMENT section. The STATEMENT section
does not have facilities such as spell checking, so you must prepare your
personal statement in Word.

Before we look at each section of the form, remember that when finished you
must print the form and submit to your form tutor for checking. When checked
the form is signed by both your tutor and yourself and handed to the sixth form
office. Ensure you put your ID number on top of the front page.

YOU MUST ALSO SEND THE FORM ONLINE TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. Note: no
changes can be made to the form once it has been sent to the ADMINISTARTOR,
so make sure it has been checked.

When completed forms are received by the ADMINISTRATOR a reference is
added. When the £17 fee is paid the form is sent electronically to UCAS.

Sections to complete
SAVE YOUR WORK REGULARLY USING THE ON SCREEN BUTTON, AS
  INTERNET CRASHES MAY MEAN YOU LOSING ALL YOUR WORK

Personal Details
      Follow the online instructions in completing this section.
      All sections must be complete.
      If you have any CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS please see the sixth form office.
       Only relevant convictions need to be declared and this is a complicated
       process.
      Most students will enter the ‘02’ fee code and select Gateshead as the
       LEA responsible for student support arrangements.
      The same area must be stated for the Area of permanent residence and
       Study support arrangements e.g. Gateshead.
      You must fill in the DISABILITY/SPECIAL NEEDS section, even if it is to
       state none.
      When complete please SAVE and click FINISHED.

Employment

      Follow the online instructions in completing this section.
      Add jobs as the instructions indicate.
      When complete please SAVE and click FINISHED.
Choices

When you access this part of the form you will be presented with the following
page.




      Use the ? to find institution and course codes for your choices.
      Some universities have various campuses. Click on the ? to choose which
       campus a course is based at. If there is only one campus, ‘Main Site – ‘
       should be selected.
      The Start date is the date that your course starts. Click on the ? for
       information.
      The Further details section allows you to add any relevant information
       that has not been identified.
      The Live at home tab is for students who will live at home whilst at a
       particular university. The Point of entry box is only for people who do not
       intend to do the first year of a course e.g. a mature student. No students
       should require to complete this box.
      When complete please SAVE and click FINISHED.
Education

      Follow the online instructions in completing this section.
      The Centre Number for Whickham School is 39145.
      Select the dates you attended secondary school. Note: the start month is
       September and the finish month July. Any students who have attended
       more than one secondary school must indicate this.
      You must enter all GCSE, GNVQ, BTEC, GCE and APPLIED qualifications
       that you have. Start with you GCSE qualifications and work up.
      You must know the grade, date and examination board.
      When entering GCE subjects any subjects you are taking through to A2
       level must have ‘Pending’ selected as the grade. AS subjects that have
       been dropped should also have ‘Pending’ selected as the grade.
      Keep returning to the list of subjects until all qualifications are entered.
      When complete please SAVE and click FINISHED.

Statement

This is the section where you will add your personal statement. It is important
that this is written and edited in Word before being copied and pasted into this
part of the form.

Points to remember:

      You have a maximum of 47 lines in which to write your personal
       statement.
      It is not possible to save words with foreign characters such as accents in
       the personal statement.
      Use the examples, helpsheet and advice of your tutors to help you write
       your personal statement. This is your chance to sell yourself to the
       universities.

Getting your personal statement complete by September is vital to your success.
  Ensure it is checked before you leave for the summer so that you can act on
                                     advice.

Finally!

When you have completed all sections:
   Ensure it is saved
   Print and have it checked by your tutor
   Sign and put ID number on and pass a hard copy to the sixth form office
   When checked by your tutor, send online to the ADMINISTRATOR
   Either pay online by credit or debit card or pass a cheque to the sixth form
      office.
   A reference will be completed and your application is ready to go.
