EXTRA CARE HOUSING

Please note: this section refers to extra care housing in the social housing
sector only, i.e. that provided by the local authority or housing
associations in Essex for rent or sale. This section does not refer to the
many extra care housing schemes in the private housing sector.

What is extra care housing?

Extra care housing is aimed at older people over the age of 55years with a
support need who are finding it difficult to remain in their current home because
of life changes or health and/or mobility problems or are just finding their current
home difficult to manage. It is intended to give people a good quality of life,
allowing them to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible but
with the peace of mind that support is on hand 24 hours a day if required. It is
often a preferable alternative to residential care.

Extra care housing offers a new way of supporting you to live
independently for as long as you possibly can. It gives you the security and
privacy of your own home, as well as offering you a range of facilities and social
activities on the premises, which often improve your health and well-being. Most
importantly there is a 24 hour on-site care service available to respond to care
emergencies and offer planned support. It mainly consists of a one or two bed-
roomed apartment in a purpose built block that is wheelchair accessible with a
level access shower instead of a bath. Communal facilities may consist of a
lounge, restaurant, laundry, treatment room, hairdressing room and/or shop.

Why choose extra care housing?

 You live in your own home – not in a home
 You have your own front door – you decide who comes in
 You have control over your finances – you choose what you
            spend your money on
 You can join in with social activities – or you can be private
 24 hour care services are on site – if you need them
           Couples can stay together
 There is a mix of able and less able older people
 You have security – the aim is a home for life

How much will it cost?

Predominantly the current extra care housing available is for rent under an
Assured Tenancy (although there will be some apartments for sale available in
the Basildon area early next year). Rent is payable either on a weekly or monthly
basis and this will also include a service charge for the upkeep of the communal
facilities and other services provided by the landlord. You may be entitled to
housing benefit to help you pay your rent, depending on your financial

There may also be a charge for housing related support – this is advice
and assistance provided to help you settle into your new home and ongoing low
level support to maintain your independence at home. You may be entitled to
Supporting People funding for all or part of this charge, again depending on your
financial circumstances.

There will also be a charge for the care you receive. An assessment of
your care needs will be undertaken by Essex Social Services prior to you moving
into the extra care scheme and you will agree your support plan with your care
provider once you have moved in. A fairer charging assessment may also be
carried out to determine how much you will actually pay towards the care you
