Dunn Bros. Coffee Shop will remain open through April. The library will be closed for one month as the collection is moved to a temporary location at 2680 Arthur Street, near Fairview Ave and County Road C. The temporary site will open May 2 and will maintain the current schedule of hours. The County Board's decision to open a temporary library will keep 80 percent of the collection open to the public and will allow the Library to continue offering storytimes, computer classes and Internet workstations. Procedures for the month-long closure are being put into place by Library management. Watch the Library's Web site, www.rclreads.org, for details on how to handle your returns and requests. During the closure, Library-goers are encouraged to visit the other six Ramsey County branches or the St. Paul Public Library system. Since opening in 1993, Roseville's business has increased 70 percent. In 2007, the library had 728,000 visitors; that's 234 people every hour the library was open. In addition, the library in Roseville circulated nearly 1.7 million items, making it the busiest public library in the state. There was a big party because 764 kindergartners registered for cards this year. More than 500 people came to the party. I got to sing the alphabet backwards at storytime (that was hard!) and watch a pirate do cool tricks. Ladies from the Junior League of Saint Paul and the Friends of the Libraries gave me treats and even a pirate eye patch! I checked out two dinosaur books and a dinosaur movie with my new card. Children’s Programs Parent Resources The Cybernetic Culture Research Unit at Warwick University has found that gaming, texting Monica Stratton, Children’s Librarian and instant messaging have become so prevalent in our society that we have actually caused a physical mutation in the human hand. The thumb is now the human hand's most muscled and dexterous digit, overtaking the index finger, in the under-25 population. While many parents may tolerate gaming in their household, there is frustration in trying to tear your child away from the television, computer or hand-held device. Why not try to tie their gaming interests to printed materials? The Library offers a variety of resources that would be of interest to the avid gamer: books offering codes and cheats, magazines that will keep gamers at the top of their skill level, books on role-playing, fantasy, social and sports games. If you want to go beyond books about gaming, try fiction with a similar theme — fantasy, historical simulation or future worlds. Ramsey County Library's reference staff would be more than willing to work with you and your avid gamer to find print outlets to feed their desire for all things gaming. Just ask! Family Read Family Read is a project developed by MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency) libraries. In participation, Ramsey County Library presents the following family literacy events to give parents tools that they can use to be their child's primary source for reader’s advisory. Monday, March 16; 6:30 p.m. RCL - Mounds View Come and meet Lauren Stringer, local author of Fold Me a Poem. Stringer will be on hand to read her books to families. Recommended for children and their parents or caregivers. Meet the Illustrator: Lauren Stringer Parent Workshop: Finding Books Your Kids Want to Read Monday, March 23; 6:30 p.m. RCL - Mounds View Do you have an elementary-aged reader who has trouble finding something they like to read? Does your reader read above their grade level? Are they a reluctant reader? Here is your chance to learn the tricks of the trade! Children's Librarian Monica Stratton will present a workshop on how you can be your child's first-stop for that ever important "what do I read next?" question. Minnesota Zoomobile Saturday, March 21; 10:30 a.m. RCL - Maplewood Zoomobile naturalists use live animals along with biological artifacts and audience participation to make each program dynamic, personable, memorable and fun. Some of the animals you might meet include a great horned owl, boa constrictor, opossum, tarantula and bugs from the rainforest! This program is sponsored by MELSA, highlighting the Museum Adventure Pass program. Vote Here: Maud Hart Lovelace The Maud Hart Lovelace Award is a children’s choice award given to nominated book titles in two different divisions. After reading books from this year’s nominee list, children in grades 3-5 and 6-8 can vote for their favorite at any Ramsey County Library through March 22. The nominee list can be found on the Maud Hart Lovelace Web site, www.maudhartlovelace.org. The award is announced every year on April 25, the birthday of this Minnesota author who was born and raised in Mankato at the turn of the 20th century. The Friends of Ramsey County Libraries sponsor these FREE programs. 7 ~Monica Notes from the President It's 2009 - Happy New Year! This is our 30-year anniversary as a volunteer group. During that time, the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries has grown and changed as any organization does, filing articles of incorporation with the state in 1988 and officially qualifying as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group. This means donations and gifts made to the Library through us are tax deductible. Nancy Guerino, President Calling All Coffee Drinkers! Dunn Bros Coffee is donating 10 percent of bean and beverage sales to the Friends when customers use a Community Giving Roastmasters Reward Card. You can help by using this card at any participating Dunn Bros coffee shop in the Twin Cities. To get your card(s), call the Friends office at 651-4862213 (or e-mail sgehrz@rclreads.org) and leave your name and address. 2009 brings a new Friend's Board roster that is missing four long-serving board members whose terms have expired. Fortunately for us, they all remain active on Friends' committees. Metta Fridley: First President, four-time President, member of the Program, Bookstore and Nominating Committees, and scheduler of computer class volunteers Mary Anne Lindberg: Three-time President, member of Communication, Advocacy and Bookstore Committees Mary Smith: Member of Program and Bookstore Committees and Annual Luncheon organizer Pat Carruth: Member of Membership and Bookstore Committees and former secretary to the Executive Committee. The Friends offers each of you heartfelt thanks. We are humbled by your example and strengthened by your continued friendship, participation and advice. Over the past 30 years the Friends have contributed more than $600,000 to the library to sponsor numerous programs for all ages. We also initiated the Kindergarten Library Card Sign-up Program in 1990, resulting in over 11,800 children signing up for library cards (thank you to Bette Ripke, Dorothea Chelgren and Phyllis Bentley). Borders Book Fair Thanks to 21 volunteers who manned the gift wrapping table and 146 people who used a Friends voucher at the Rosedale Borders. Your support is essential. ~ Nancy Guerino Old Cell Phones Wanted Ring in the new year by dropping off old cell phones in collection boxes found at all Ramsey County Library branches except Mounds View. Friends’ volunteers ship these phones to GRC Recycling in Florida where they are processed and any unusable parts are disposed of ecologically – they do NOT end up in landfills. GRC pays us for the phones they can use and we use this money to fill requests for equipment, books or programs that the library needs. Since we started this program in 2007, we have raised $2,735 for the library, with $1,836 coming in during 2008 alone. Please donate phones only, we cannot take chargers, manuals or packaging. Thanks for helping the library and the environment! A Charitable Bequest Looking for a way to help your libraries keep thriving for future generations? Consider including a gift to the Friends in your will. We are a nonprofit organization that welcomes bequests. Our Federal Tax ID number is 41-1597085.
