In the Malls, Not at the Polls
                                   (by Gideon Alon)

1. On March 28, 2006 there is Election Day in Israel. On the day of the Knesset
elections all government offices, factories and schools are closed. Election Day is a
national holiday in Israel since the first Knesset elections on January 24, 1949.
Israel is the only country in the world where Election Day is declared a holiday.
Why? In other countries elections are held on a Sunday which is a day-off there. In
Israel, for obvious reasons, to hold elections on Fridays and Shabbat is impossible.

2. If Election Day were not declared a holiday it is doubtful whether people who
work until the late evening hours would take part in the elections. It is also hard to
believe that their bosses would allow them to go and vote in the middle of the day.

3. But elections cost a lot of money to the Israeli economy. The losses due to the
holiday are about one billion shekels. Many politicians want the holiday to be
cancelled. They say that despite the day off work a lot of people do not use their
right to vote. They go instead to shopping malls, cinemas, theatres and museums. If
the weather is good, Israelis visit the beaches and parks. In recent decades, less and
less people find time to vote.

4. It may be that the number of people who use their right to vote would be
similar even if the elections were held on a regular day. Is it worth wasting
hundred of millions of shekels in order to enable voters to go to the polls, a process
that takes only a few minutes, or an hour at most?
