INTRODUCTION

Welcome to this, the first Aid CPR / AED course presented for SASHA Portugal at the training school here in
Caldas Das Rainha in Portugal, it is taken from the Fifth edition manual and is co-ordinated by SASHA
Instructors on behalf of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Thanks must be offered to our numerous Medical Colleagues around the World, whose enthusiasm and
commitment for ATLS training over many years has now been extended to the First Aid CPR / AED training
programme. Special mention must be made to Paulo Perez and Alvaro Ribeiro whose determination and
commitment to SASHA Portugal has enabled this course to take place thus commencing a new bond and
working relationship between SASHA Portugal and the SASHA faculty.

The programme will be very intensive and certainly time constrained. You are therefore asked to ensure
punctuality, especially at the commencement of each day and for all the sessions, as delays will result in an
extension of an already long working day.

It is hoped that you will enjoy the course and will find the arrangements and facilities satisfactory. Either myself
or a member of the course faculty will be available at all times should you have any difficulties or requirements.
The standard of dress is working dress (non-uniform) to allow participation in skill stations from a functional
point of view. Please do not hesitate to ask if you require assistance.

On behalf of the Medical Director and Course Faculty, may I wish you well with your forthcoming training?

Our patients did not choose us, we chose them. We could have chosen another profession, but we didn’t. We
have accepted the responsibility for patient care during some of the worst situations imaginable: When we are
tired and cold, when it’s wet and dark or even when we can’t predict the situations we shall encounter. We
must either accept this responsibility or surrender it. We must give to our patients the best care possible. Not
while we are day dreaming, not with faulty or unchecked equipment, not with inadequate supplies and most
importantly, not with yesterday's knowledge.

We must know what medical information is current, we cannot profess to be fully prepared to care for patients
if we do not continue to update and take onboard new teachings each day. The CPR / AED course provides a
part of that knowledge to the Pre-Hospital Provider but, more importantly, it ultimately benefits the person who
needs our all - The Patient.

At the end of each journey, we should feel that OUR patient had received nothing but the very best.

                               ----------------------------------------------

Thank you for attending this Course in your own time, this displays your belief and commitment to both your
patients and the First Responder Ethos, and as such you are to be highly commended, we hope that you have
enjoyed the Course. Your Certificates will follow in about
4 / 6 weeks and will be passed on to you by the faculty.
