An Active Community is one that promotes and supports, through a coordinated strategy, a way of life in which physical activity is valued and integrated into daily life. One major factor contributing to health is physical activity. By putting your body in motion for 30 - 60 minutes a day, you can reap health benefits, have fun and meet new people. Years ago, anything less than strenuous exercise was seen as a waste of time. But new research shows that you can get many benefits from regular, moderate physical activity - as little as 10 minutes, 3 times a day. Take Ten minutes out of your day to get active! Walking The Public Health Agency of Canada’s Physical Activity Guide supports walking as both an endurance and strength activity. People walk for many reasons - for exercise, for pleasure, to experience the outdoors, to lessen the effects of chronic health conditions and environmental concerns. Walking strengthens bones and muscles and is virtually injuryfree. Walking can be done almost anytime, anywhere, and it’s free! Williams Lake has some of the best trails to walk on. See page 34 for Nordic Walking and Trail Walking programs. Hiking Hiking is walking on a trail either in a neighborhood or along a river trail. The benefits of hiking are: weight loss, decrease in blood pressure, increase in bone density and a reduce risk of diabetes. Hiking is relatively inexpensive and can be done anywhere. Good hiking boots and socks are a necessity for a successful outing. Williams Lake has some of the best hiking trails within a close proximity to the downtown core. Sports Williams Lake has a large variety of sports and activities to get active. Play basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball or volleyball. Take a dance or Tai Chi class or just play outdoors with your child. See page 48 of this Guide for Community and Sports organizations. Benefits of incorporating Physical Activity into your daily life: • It decreases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, high blood pressure and osteoporosis • Active people have a lower risk of colon cancer and breast cancer than sedentary people • Physical Activity helps you to stay healthy, live longer and improve quality of life • Exercise slows the rate of bone loss and reduces the chance of acquiring osteoporosis The Opportunities for Active Living are Endless ….. Your carts will be delivered to the curb in front of your address with a detailed instruction package attached. Each household in the City will be supplied with two carts. One cart will be for solid waste and one cart, with a blue lid, is for recycling. The bins will be delivered to your curb with an instruction sheet on how the program works. The carts will be emptied once a week by an automated truck on your normal collection day. The carts are 240 litres each, or the size of 2 regular garbage cans. All carts set out at the curb must have the lid closed completely or the cart will not be picked up. Excess garbage that does not fit in the cart will be the responsibility of the home owner to bring to the transfer station on Frizzi Road. Each cart is the property of the address it was delivered to. An electronic identification system is embedded in the cart to ensure carts are at the proper address. If the cart is lost, stolen, or damaged by the resident, it will be the resident’s responsibility to purchase a new cart from the City. The homeowner will be responsible for finding a safe location to store the carts. They cannot be left at curbside. The carts are issued to that address and must remain there. They must be left for the next resident. Recycling WHAT GOES IN THE RECYCLING CART? √ WASHED TIN CANS √ ALL PLASTICS √ All types of cardboard including corrugated & cereal boxes. √ MIXED PAPER, including office paper, newspapers & inserts. X No plastic bags, styrofoam or glass. WHAT GOES IN THE GARBAGE CART? All other household waste that is not recyclable. No explosives or corrosive material, tires, batteries, drywall, animal carcasses, oil or filters, electronic equipment. RECYCLING STATIONS WILL BE RELOCATED Once the new solid waste cart system is implemented in the City, the recycling stations at the Cariboo Memorial Complex and Canadian Tire will be relocated to the Transfer Station on Frizzi Road. Other products that can be recycled, such as glass, tires, batteries, and appliances can be brought to the appropriate product stewardship businesses in Williams Lake. You can also donate your empty beverage containers at Amanda Enterprises and the proceeds will go to the charity of your choice. Be part of the solution by switching to “green” cleaning products Many cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that cause damage to our watershed… a watershed is an area of land that drains down slope and eventually arrives at the ocean. It is made up of surface water you can “see” such as the lake, and water you don’t see like the water deep underground in our aquifer. Everything we do on land affects our watershed and the people, plants and animals that live within it… including you. Reduce the chemicals leaving your home today by using green cleaning products. Settlers were attracted to the Cariboo’s grasslands and took up ranching. Some were on their way to the gold fields but the ‘green gold’ of the fertile countryside enticed them to stay and ranch. Ranching is still one of the mainstays of the area’s economy. Displays and photos tell the story of Williams Lake - from its beginnings as a Shuswap village - and the people and events throughout the years that helped shape today’s City. The museum is located at the corner of 4th Avenue and Borland Street. It is open year round. In June, July and August it is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm. The rest of the year it is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am - 4 pm. The building is totally wheelchair accessible with ramps and an elevator. Group tours are offered and special events and fundraisers are held throughout the year. Volunteers play a large part of running the museum, which is operated by a non profit society. This building is a “first of its kind” in the province and showcases the area’s industry, economy, history and culture. It also provides endless amounts of information to intrigue tourists from around the world and offers local residents a state of the art facility. An attraction in itself The magnificent log and timber structure is a 14,000 square foot mega structure built by world class log and construction contractors. Just a few of the features exclusive to the building are: a first in North America truss system; a 750 year old, 52 foot tall western red cedar centre post with root mass intact; log carvings; a log cabin inside the structure; pull through RV/bus service and parking, and interactive displays. The TDC is owned by the City of Williams Lake and managed by the Central Cariboo Economic Development Corporation. Housed in the TDC are: • A British Columbia approved Visitor Centre • The Chamber of Commerce office • The Bean Express and Gift Shoppe • The Central Cariboo Tourism office The interior exhibits include four interactive displays depicting tourism and lifestyle in the region. These displays incorporate many props that have been collected from near and far to make the exhibits distinctive.
