The recommender’s signature must be on both the letter of reference and across the sealed flap. Unsigned reference letters will not be accepted. Letters of recommendation are used for admission and scholarship review in the applicant’s intended field of study only. All letters of recommendation are destroyed after the review process. Personal Statement The personal statement is an important part of the application review process. Applicants should present a carefully planned and written statement of approximately two to three pages in length describing their background, past work in the intended field of study, plans for graduate study and a professional career, or any other information they feel is relevant. Applicants who are currently registered in a graduate program at another university should explain why they wish to leave. The personal statement can be submitted online as part of the online application. Official Transcript(s) First-time applicants to the College must submit one official transcript from each college or university in which they were enrolled for any period of time, showing all courses, grades and degrees received, if any. 05 Résumé Applicants must submit a current résumé or chronological listing of employment and other significant activities. The résumé can be submitted online as part of the online application. • Applicants to the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESOL) or Applied Linguistics programs must submit an English proficiency exam score if their native language is not English, regardless of where their undergraduate and/or graduate work was obtained. In addition, these programs have minimum score requirements that differ from all other programs. Refer to the individual program listings for more information. Supplemental Application Requirements Some programs require application materials such as standardized test scores or writing samples (separate from the Personal Statement). Please refer to the individual program information sections of the catalog or this guide for more information. Supplemental Application Requirements (with the exception of additional letters of recommendation) cannot be submitted online and must be mailed directly to the Office of Admission. Notification of Decision The Office of Admission will notify the applicant once the application is complete. The length of the application review process varies from program to program. The official notification of the decision is the letter bearing the signature of the Director of Admission. It is our goal to notify all applicants who submit a complete application by the published early application deadlines by March 15. Decisions will not be given over the telephone. In order to ensure a place in a program, a $300.00 U.S. nonrefundable tuition deposit must be received by Teachers College. Instructions and deposit deadlines will be included in your letter of admission. Upon enrollment, this deposit will be credited to the student’s account. Standardized Tests Applicants are expected to take any required standardized tests well before the application deadline(s). Official scores of any required standardized test, such as the TOEFL, GRE, or MAT must be directly reported to Teachers College Office of Admission by the Testing Centers. Results of the GRE should not be more than five years old and results of the TOEFL should not be more than two years old. Expired scores will not be accepted. For the TOEFL, GRE, or other tests administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the assigned institution code for Teachers College is 2905. Please leave the department code blank. For all applicants whose native language is not English and who have received a baccalaureate degree from an institution where English is not the official language of instruction, an English proficiency exam must be taken. Deferral of Admission Students may defer their admission to a Master of Arts, Master of Education, or Master of Science degree program for one year, unless otherwise specified by the program. Those students admitted to doctoral programs must have the permission of the program to which they were admitted to defer an offer of admission. Requests for deferral of admission must be made in writing to the Office of Admission. Students wishing to defer are required to submit the $300.00 U.S. non-refundable tuition deposit. Please note: • Applicants who attended a graduate institution where the language of instruction is English are not exempt from the English proficiency exam. • The minimum TOEFL exam score required by Teachers College is 100 on the internet based test (IBT), 250 on the computer based test, and 600 on the paper based test. The TOEFL is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Applicants may obtain further information on TOEFL from their local overseas educational advising center (www. educationusa.state.gov/centers) or at www.toefl.org. • The minimum IELTS exam score required by Teachers College is an overall band score of 7.0. The minimum CPE exam score required by Teachers College is a B. The IELTS and CPE are both administered by the University of Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages (Cambridge ESOL). Applicants may obtain further information on these tests from www.cambridgeesol.org. • The minimum Columbia University English Placement (EPT) score is level 10 on both sections of the examination. The EPT is administered by the Columbia University American Language Program. • Applicants may obtain further information on EPT from www. ce.columbia.edu/alp. Students who require non-standard administration of the tests should consult with the Office of Access and Services for Students with Disabilities at (212) 678-2989 V/TDD or oasid@tc.edu for information about such accommodations. Transfer Credit Students may apply for transfer credit upon registering at TC. No transfer credit is awarded for Master of Arts students. This includes Teachers College credits that have already been applied towards a conferred Master of Arts degree. For the Master of Education and the Doctor of Philosophy, a maximum of 30 points completed outside of Teachers College may be transferred. For the Doctor of Education and Doctor of Education in the College Teaching of an Academic Subject, a maximum of 45 points may be transferred; moreover, for the Doctor of Philosophy, up to 45 points completed in another faculty of Columbia University may be transferred. Only graduate courses which have been (1) completed with grades of B or higher, (2) submitted on an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution, and (3) granted/assigned credit on the transcript of that institution, may be considered for transfer credit. Transfer credit is awarded at the discretion of the faculty advisor. For more information, please refer to the “Degree Requirements” section of the Teachers College Catalog (www.tc.columbia.edu/catalog). GUIDE TO ADMISSION Teachers College, Columbia University 06 International Students International students must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree in order to be reviewed for admission to Teachers College. Applicants who do not meet this requirement will not be considered for admission. International applicants must submit detailed school records of all subjects taken and examinations attempted for all university or post secondary work completed plus proof of graduation and degree conferral, where available. All records should indicate complete dates of attendance, subjects studied, grades (marks or final assessment) received, hours per week spent in lectures, and degrees or diplomas awarded. Foreign language records will not be accepted without both an official copy of the original and a notarized word-for-word English translation. The Office of Admission will review all credentials and determine baccalaureate degree equivalency. Applicants are expected to collect and prepare international educational credentials well in advance of the application deadline. Incomplete records will not be reviewed for admission. If a school an applicant attended is no longer in existence or it is impossible for her/him to obtain official documents from a school s/he has attended, the applicant should have the Ministry of Education of that country furnish an official statement testifying to the impossibility of obtaining records. The Ministry should also supply Teachers College with a list of courses ordinarily required in the degree program an applicant has followed in that school or university. Students who have earned a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a college or university where English is not the official language of instruction must take an exam to establish English Language proficiency (see “Standardized Tests” section). Applicants should not submit bank statements or other proof of funds with application materials. Documents necessary to obtain a student visa (I-20 or DS-2019) are sent only after an applicant is officially admitted to Teachers College and has submitted the Application for Visa Certificate (AVC) (available online at www.tc.columbia.edu/international/newstudent), and supporting documents certifying that s/he has the necessary funds to meet the cost of full-time study at Teachers College. Holders of student visas (F-1 or J-1) are required to study full-time, that is, at least 12 points per semester. A copy of the ID page(s) of the passport or national ID card and your address in your country of permanent residence are also required. Be certain that any form not issued in English is accompanied by a notarized English translation. Individuals holding B-1 or B-2 status, or who entered the United States on a visa waiver, may be in violation of their status if they enroll in classes. Contact International Services at tcintl@tc.edu with any questions related to visas or visit www.tc.columbia.edu/international. For admission to non-degree status, applicants must provide a completed non-degree application form (PDF available online at www.tc.columbia. edu/apply), $65.00 non-refundable application fee (check or money order), and proof of baccalaureate degree (photocopy of official transcript or diploma). Please note we cannot accept proof of a Masters degree instead of a baccalaureate. International transcripts must be accompanied by additional documentation, as mentioned in the “International Students” section. A student may take up to 16 points in a non-degree status as long as the academic standards of the College are met. If a non-degree student wishes to exceed the maximum of 16 points s/he must either: • Be admitted to a Teachers College degree program, or • Obtain approval from the Registrar for registration. Admission to non-degree status implies no commitment for admission to a degree program. Should a non-degree student become a degree candidate, a maximum of 16 points (8 in the major field) taken in non-degree status may be applied toward a degree program. Re-applicants Applicants who applied one or more years ago to Teachers College but never enrolled should use the online application to re-apply. The Office of Admission holds incomplete applications and applications for those who were admitted but did not enroll for only one year. If you have not applied or enrolled to Teachers College in over one year, you must complete the application and provide all supporting materials. If you have applied to Teachers College three consecutive times and were denied admission each time, you must wait three years before submitting another application for admission. The FAFSA is available by January of each year from the Office of Financial Aid. Students can also find and file the FAFSA on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Institutional code for Teachers College is G03979. Students are encouraged to fill out the FAFSA as early as possible. Students do not need to wait until they have been admitted. Loans There are several types of student loans available to Teachers College students. To qualify for any of the federal loans, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must be enrolled at least half-time (6 points or the equivalent) in a degree program. You must also file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). International students may qualify for creditworthy loans from a bank by securing a cosigner who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Consult with a financial aid counselor for more information. Please visit the Teachers College website for additional information at www.tc.columbia.edu/financialaid. International Students International students should download and complete the Teachers College Scholarship Application and visit the Teachers College website to find out about additional scholarships. International students are not eligible for Federal Financial Aid but may apply for private student loans. Residential Life The Office of Residential Services at Teachers College strives to create a multicultural campus community that supports students in their academic endeavors and personal growth. The residence halls bring together graduate students from all over the world in an environment that provides a unique opportunity to establish new friendships, explore world views, and take advantage of all that New York City offers. Living close to the campus affords students easy access to the library, classroom, gym, and other Columbia University facilities. Students may choose to take advantage of a wide range of residence hall activities, club meetings, departmental lectures, and cultural events. Teachers College has approximately 600 spaces available for single students and 150 apartments for students with families. The buildings are located in a vibrant and historic urban neighborhood known as Morningside Heights. Most of our residence halls are historic buildings similar to other early 1900’s New York City apartmentstyle buildings. Scholarships and Grants at Teachers College Each year Teachers College awards over $7 million of its own funds and $2 million of endowed funds to new and continuing students. Most scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic merit. Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program to receive a scholarship. Scholarships are applied to tuition only, and students should expect to provide additional funds for the tuition balance, fees, medical insurance, academic, and living expenses. Types of financial aid include: • General scholarships • Minority student scholarships • International student scholarships • Stipends, internships, fellowships, and research assistantships • Graduate assistantships • Grants-in-aid • Endowed scholarships For a complete listing of endowed scholarships visit the Teachers College website at www.tc.columbia.edu/financialaid. Eligibility for Housing In order to be eligible for student housing, residents must be enrolled in a degree program at Teachers College and registered for classes. To maintain eligibility, residents must be registered for a minimum of 24 credits (or have full-time equivalency) during a 12-month period beginning with the Fall semester. If full time equivalency is needed, you must have an approved Certificate of Equivalency (COE) on file with the Office of the Registrar. Residents must register for at least 24 credits (or have full-time equivalency) during a 12-month period beginning with the Fall semester to be eligible for housing for the subsequent contract period. Residents who register for 24 credits (or have full-time equivalency) during the Fall and Spring semesters combined (or 12 credits during the Spring term for residents who begin residency in the Spring) are not required to register for Summer term courses and may remain in the residence hall, but must re-enroll for the upcoming Fall term and live in Teachers College Housing for the upcoming Fall term. How to Apply for a Teachers College Scholarship Program faculty will nominate new students for scholarships based upon the admission and degree applications of the new students and on the Teachers College academic records for the continuing students. In addition to the FAFSA, all students must complete a TC Financial Aid & Scholarship Application to be considered for aid and scholarships. To receive priority consideration for scholarships, new students must complete their admissions application by the early deadlines. For those scholarships requiring financial need, the Office of Financial Aid will review the students’ FAFSA to determine whether the nominated students meet the level of financial need required by the donor. Endowed scholarships are provided through the generosity of donors’ contributions. Many of these are in support of students in particular programs. Faculty committees select the award recipients based upon criteria designated by the donor. Students in the Curriculum and Teaching Department also need to file the Continuing Student Scholarship application with their department by February 1st in order to be considered for scholarships in the next academic year. GUIDE TO ADMISSION Teachers College, Columbia University 22 When to Apply for Housing Housing offers are based on availability of units, geographic priority, and date of receipt of application. Applicants outside a 30-mile radius of the greater New York City area have the highest priority for housing. Unfortunately, given the limited number of spaces available, we may be unable to accommodate all requests for housing. Housing application may be completed: • On-line: Visit our website at www.tc.columbia.edu/housing. Follow link to complete application and pay $30.00 application fee with credit card. • Paper: Complete the paper application (available by request from the Office of Residential Services), attach $30.00 application fee and mail directly to the Office of Residential Services. Please note: Students may apply for housing up to one year in advance of the term they seek housing. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate all requests for housing. *Applicants to programs which meet exclusively during the Summer (e.g. InStep, Summer Principals Academy) should apply for Summer Conference Housing through the Office of Residential Services (www. tc.columbia.edu/housing).
