The E. W. Scripps Company (Scripps) is involved in newspaper publishing, television broadcasting, and licensing and
syndication. The company publishes daily and community newspapers in 14 markets, and broadcasts 10 TV stations, in
the US. As of December 2009, Scripps employed 5,000 employees.
The company operates its business through three operating segments, namely, Newspapers, Television and Licensing
and other.
Under the Newspapers segment, the company engages in the publication of daily and community newspapers in 14
markets across the US. Some of the major newspapers of the company include San Angelo (TX) Standard-Times,
Ventura County (CA) Star, Kitsap (WA) Sun, Evansville (IN) Courier & Press and Henderson (KY) Gleaner. The segment
also operates web portals, which offer interactive services, e commerce, advertising, along with news and information
content. During the fiscal year 2009, the Newspaper segment generated more than 71% of operating revenues from
advertising alone. The segment’s various sources of advertising include preprinted inserts, advertising on web portals,
direct mail and Run-of-Press advertising. During the fiscal year 2009, the Newspapers segment of the company
contributed 56.72% towards the total revenues of the company, generating USD 455.16 million.
The company, under Television segment, operates six ABC-affiliated stations, three NBC-affiliated stations and one
independent station in the US. Scripps’s portfolio of TV stations comprises WXYZ-TV, KNXV-TV, WFTS-TV, WMAR-TV,
WCPO-TV, KJRH-TV and KSHB-TV. The segment serves around 10% of the US television households located in major

Under the Licensing and Other segment, the company involves in syndication and licensing of news features and comics.
Scripps distributes a variety of news columns, comics and other features in the newspaper industry globally. Some of the

features for use on numerous products, such as toys, cards, apparel, exhibits on television and other media. During the
