Arriva plc - Business Description

Arriva plc (Arriva) is a transport services provider, which is based in European. It offers transportation services through
various modes including road and rail. The company had a total fleet of 14,800 buses and around 587 train sets. It
provides services across 11 countries in Europe. Arriva employed 42,300 people as of December 31, 2009. On August
27, 2010 Arriva was acquired by Deutsche Bahn.

Arriva conducts its business operations through three business segments namely, UK Trains, Mainland Europe, and UK
Bus.

The company under the UK train segment operates through two franchises, namely, CrossCountry and Arriva Trains,
Wales. CrossCountry network covers 100 stations and has in excess of 1,500 route miles. This franchise comprises 217
train sets and 3,900 human resources. It has many hubs along the route. The average passenger journey length on this
franchise is 130 miles. CrossCountry is the UK’s first train operator to facilitate the customers to buy and print tickets from
home, named e-tickets. Another franchise, Arriva Trains & Wales reports journey length on this franchise is 17.4 miles. Its
journey route is a mix of urban rail network in South Wales and business orientated travel in North Wales and North-West
England. It consists of a network from Liverpool and Manchester through North and South Wales to Bristol and Penzance.
During the fiscal year 2009, the segment contributed 22.3% towards the total revenues of the company, generating GBP
702.6 million, a decrease of 16.1% over the previous year.

Arriva under the Mainland Europe segment provides transport services through the road and rail network in Europe. It
provides passenger transport in Europe including Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden and the U K. The segment operates through 8,500 buses which also includes waterbuses, and 370 train
sets. During the fiscal year 2009, the segment contributed 47.1% towards the total revenues of the company, generating
GBP 1,483.70 million, an increase of 15.7% over the previous year.

Furthermore, the company under the UK Bus segment operates a fleet of 6,300 buses over two operating markets
London and the UK and offers bus transport services in the North East, North West and South East of England, Yorkshire,
the Midlands, Scotland and Wales. It also provides these services in Galicia, in Madrid, Island of Mallorca in Spain and
Portugal. During the fiscal year 2009, the segment contributed 30.5% towards the total revenues of the company,
generating GBP 961.5 million, an increase of 4.2% over the previous year.

Similarly, the company geographically operates under UK and Mainland Europe segments. During the fiscal year 2009,
the UK segment contributed 52.9% towards the total revenues of the company with the remaining 47.1% contributed by
the Mainland Europe segment.

Recently, Arriva launched the first phase of its website in Malta provide bus services for Malta and Gozo. The company
has been awarded a 10 year regional rail contract in the Kujawsko Pomorskie region of Poland. Furthermore, Arriva
Midlands acquired Wardle Transport, a leading provider of transport solutions in the Potteries. The Arriva Malta
consortium along with local partner Tumas Group plc, signed a 10-year contract to provide scheduled bus services in
Malta and Gozo.
