Counseling: Considerations
“Reparative therapy” & “ex-gay movement”
In 1990, American Psychological Association stated that scientific evidence shows that
reparative therapy does not work and can do more harm than good.
http://www.pflag.org/Reparative_Therapy.exgay.0.html
In 1998, American Psychiatric Association stated: “psychiatric literature strongly demonstrates
that treatment attempts to change sexual orientation are ineffective. However, the potential
risks are great, including depression, anxiety and self-destructive [suicidal] behavior...”
http://www.psych.org/psych_pract/copptherapyaddendum83100.cfm
21
American Medical Association policy number H-160.991: opposes “the use of ‘reparative’ or
‘conversion’ therapy that is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental
disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her
homosexual orientation.” http://www.ama-
assn.org/apps/pf_new/pf_online?f_n=browse&doc=policyfiles/HnE/H-160.991.HTM
Homosexuality is not “a reversible lifestyle choice.”
In 2001, The U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Sexual Health and Responsible
Sexual Behavior asserted that homosexuality is not “a reversible lifestyle choice.”
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/sexualhealth/call.pdf
“Internalized homophobia”
“Belief that same-gender sexual orientation and/or gender identity is inferior to heterosexual
orientation and/or masculine or feminine gender identity. The internalization of negative
messages, feelings about oneself and one’s group, and the beliefs about how people like you
should be treated, which often leads to self-hate and difficulty with self-acceptance. Also
irrational fear of breaking cultural/ stereotypical gender roles.”

Orthodox Christian – The Self-Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America
“Much of what was earlier said before about sexual relations outside of marriage applies to
homosexual relationships. The Scriptures and the Fathers of the Church … classify this behavior as
unnatural and immoral…. The Church has long taught that we are called to love all people but not
all behaviors. When one condemns homosexual conduct, he or she condemns the conduct not the
person…. ” (http://www.antiochian.org/homosexuality)
http://www.antiochian.org/
Presbyterian – Presbyterian Church in America
“The PCA believe(s) God's intent in creation was that male and female would be complementary,
that the privilege of sexual expression would be between male and female only, and this expression
would be only in the context of marriage. Both heterosexual and homosexual sexual behavior
outside of marriage violates the human spirit and distorts God’s intent for men and women.”

Presbyterian – Presbyterian Church (USA)
“…there are people who would like you to believe that the [Presbyterian Book of Order] forbids
gay/lesbian people from ordained leadership, but Presbyterian court decisions have been quite clear
that simply being gay or lesbian is not sufficient grounds to disqualify a person for ordination….
have drawn a distinction between sexual orientation and sexual ‘practice’ …. The status of bisexual
and transgender Presbyterians has not been addressed directly by the Book of Order, nor has it
been addressed by the church courts…. The General Assembly’s Permanent Judicial Commission
has interpreted the Church’s Constitution … by indicating that a ‘same-sex union that is liturgically
distinct from a marriage ceremony is permissible under church law.’ … ”

presented to the 2006 General Synod was returned to the commission for review and revision….”

Religious Science
“Religious Science teaches that Love is the greatest power in the universe…. Romantic love
expressed between two consenting adults is perfectly acceptable…. we believe that homosexuality,
bisexuality and lesbianism are perfectly normal and acceptable ways to express sexuality in a
loving relationship. Legal Marriage is purely a creation of man; Spiritual Marriage exists as an
agreement between the parties themselves.”
http://www.rsintl.org/
Religious Science – an individual’s viewpoints
“I believe that there's a spiritual awakening happening in the world, and am convinced that GLBT
people have a particular, critical role to play in supporting that evolution. I think the times are
calling for us GLBT people to BE more – and DO more – than we ever have before. Though it
doesn't yet know it, the world is calling for us to step more fully into our roles of spiritual service
and leadership.” Christian de la Huerta cited on
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gaysouthflorida/religion/index.html (Steve Rothaus' Gay South
Florida blog)
Roman Catholic
“…as laid out in the revised version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in particular the
teachings on sexuality: ‘All the baptized are called to chastity’ (CCC, n.2348); ‘Married people are
called to live conjugal chastity; others practice chastity in continence’ (CCC, n.2349); ‘... tradition
has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered... Under no circumstance can
they be approved’ (CCC, n.2333)…. There is every reason to hope that every person experiencing
same-sex attraction who seeks help from the Church can find freedom from homosexual
behavior….” (Catholic Medical Association

United Church of Christ
Operates an “Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Concerns” “Beginning as early as
1969, the United Church of Christ has wrestled with similar questions of inclusion and exclusion
with regard to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. However, increasingly, the UCC is
seeking to be a place of extravagant welcome for LGBT persons…. The local church … has the
