OBJECTIVES OF THE PRESENTATION
To inform the Private Sector in the SADC region
especially RSA about the Transport Hub Initiative
being implemented by Botswana.
The opportunities available for private sector
investment and participation in this initiative.

TRANPORT HUB BACKGROUND
Various studies conducted recently indicated that
Botswana has the potential to become a viable
transport and logistics hub.
In order to realise this potential, the Government
decided to establish the Transport Hub office.
The Hub office became operational in April 2008.

STRATEGIES
Create an ‘enabling environment’ through constant interaction
between the Private and Private sectors.
Develop and collate an understanding of the needs and
requirements of the transport/logistics industry.
Participate in all forms of interaction with potential investors,
operators and other key stakeholders within the industry.
Drive and co-ordinate the various projects that have already
been identified by the Ministry/Government and develop new
initiatives and projects.
Actively promote the efforts being made by the Transport Hub
and market the opportunities for investment that are being
created as part of the Hub initiative.

PROGRAMMES/PROJECTS BEING UNDERTAKEN BY THE HUB
Development of a Dry Port at Walvis Bay – on-going at feasibility
study stage.
Construction of Kazungula Bridge- Design work has commenced,
Construction and related facilities expected to commence in early
2011.
Liberalisation of Aviation Sector- Operation of scheduled air
transport services and operation of domestic and regional air
services is being liberalised except for Johannesburg – Gaborone
and Johannesburg – Maun.

Trans Kalahari Railway- Project at pre-feasibility study due
to be completed May, 2010.

Liberalisation of Air Transport Sector-
-Operation of scheduled air transport services.
-More operators to licensed during the second quarter.
-Intercontinental airlines have been invited to operate
air services to/from Botswana.

Development of a Multi-Modal Air Cargo Services hub-
-The project will be implemented in three (3) phases.
-Work on phase I is ongoing.
-These facilities are expected to be operational by
December,2010

Proposed Heavy Haul Railway Line Between
Botswana and Mozambique-
-Consultations on this project are on-going
between the two countries.
-This project will open an alternative gateway to
the sea.

TRANSPORT HUB- OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIVATE SECTOR
PARTICIPATION
The Hub will create immense opportunities for private
sector participation and investment.
Most of the projects initiated by the Hub are expected to
be private sector driven.
The role of the Hub will be mainly to initiate transport
projects/programmes that are strategic in nature and
create an enabling environment for private investment
and facilitate seamless private operations
The Hub will continuously engage all stakeholders their
views are duly taken into account.

SECTOR PARTICIPATION
Indirect opportunities for investment in other key sectors
such as tourism, trade, and agriculture which are
expected to benefit from the Hub activities.
Participation in the development, operation and
maintenance of the of most of the above mentioned
projects.

WHY INVEST IN THE TRANSPORT SECTOR IN
BOTSWANA
Traffic volumes of road/rail/air are rapidly increasing.
The quantity, quality and connectivity of the transport
infrastructure is being substantially enhanced.
The transport sector policy and regulatory issues are being
reviewed to facilitate seamless movement of people and
goods.

BOTSWANA
The strategic location of Botswana provides economic
and efficient consolidation, distribution and transiting of
goods and passengers within the region and beyond.
Botswana provides for a stable and secure environment
for transport operators.
