An exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects from Higher School Certificate Design and Technology students
Coventry Room Parkes Shire Library and Cultural Centre Bogan Street, Parkes 2 June to 12 June 2009
Message from the Minister
Welcome to the 2008 DesignTECH exhibition! This year’s NSW Higher School Certificate Design and Technology students have created an array of innovative designs that will impress visitors with their ingenuity, quality and purpose. Students have combined design and technology principles with their own creativity to tackle everything from everyday matters to big picture solutions. This is a prestigious HSC showcase, and each of the students is to be congratulated on having their work chosen. In 2008, the major design projects of 215 students were nominated for DesignTECH from more than 3 700 works submitted for the HSC exams. The projects selected for exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum and regional galleries represent a wide variety of design fields. One of the highlights of the regional exhibitions in each area is the selection of designs by local students. Many big ideas come from students in country and regional areas. One of their key contributions is innovation with an agricultural focus. Showcasing the inventions and designs of local students demonstrates what is possible and provides inspiration to current and future Design and Technology students, no matter where they live. DesignTECH is a valuable resource for future HSC students and their teachers, giving them the opportunity to witness the scope and quality of the Design and Technology syllabus. It also gives the wider community an insight into the challenge and sophistication of design and technology education in NSW. Thank you to the regional galleries and venues around the state which will host DesignTECH in 2009. Thank you also to the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of New South Wales for sponsoring the Regional Tour Award. Of course DesignTECH would not be possible without the outstanding works of the 2008 HSC Design and Technology students and the support and encouragement of their passionate and highly skilled teachers. They have made this year’s exhibition a memorable one. Enjoy the exhibition!
Verity Firth MP Minister for Education and Training
There are endless benefits associated with living and working in a sustainable environment. At UNSW’s Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) the creation of a sustainable future, through sustainable design, is more than something we’re working towards, it’s a daily reality. Through the design, management, planning and development of environmentally sustainable projects, our students are not only thinking about sustainability but are making it happen. And, to make sure sustainability continues to be a focus in the future, FBE is pleased to play a role in encouraging our designers of the future by sponsoring the impressive work of regional students participating in DesignTECH.
