  1. Demonstrate, via partial differentiation, that a traveling gaussian wave

     pulse, represented by the function y = 5e−(x+3t) satisfies the one-
     dimensional wave equation.

  2. Consider a beam of laser light of wavelength 500 nm of intensity 1 W/m2
     which is travelling in the z-direction and polarized in the x-direction.

     (a) Write the travelling wave representation of both the electric and
         magnetic fields. Note that there is a typo in the equation given
         for intensity given in class. The correct equation is I = c o E 2 /2.
     (b) Sketch the E and B fields as a function of position for a fixed
         time.
