VICTIM: See Below Narrative
SUSPECT: See Below Narrative
The following information is fragmentary and has not been completely verified. It is
based, in part, on hearsay and is intended for early information use rather than being a
formal investigative report.
At about 6:30 P.M., yesterday (September 7th), deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to a 9-1-1
call of a shooting at 17380 Via Recanto in Rancho Santa Fe.
Once on scene, they were directed to 40 year-old Thomas Allen Blackmore of San Diego, who had suffered a
gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby location where he was transferred to Mercy Air,
and then flown to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he died early this morning.
The initial investigation into this incident suggests the following sequence of events leading up to this shooting:
The decedent and his parents have recently experienced what could best be described as a somewhat strained
relationship, with the son having been hospitalized as recently as within the past week over concerns related to
his mental stability. Yesterday evening, he parked his vehicle approximately ¼ mile from his parents residence
then walked to their home, where he appeared at their front door. When his mother answered the door he
physically assaulted her in which a struggle ensued. It was at this point that the father retrieved a firearm and
shot his son. The mother called 9-1-1, while the father administered first aid until the arrival of emergency
personnel. Coupled with their son’s bizarre behavior, a two gallon container of gasoline was found next to the
front door, where the decedent entered the home.
The investigation into this matter is continuing. Once it has been completed it will be submitted to the District
Attorney’s Office for review.
