THE RIGHTS OF LEARNERS Every learner has the right: to be treated fairly and responsibly; to show respect to others; to be taught in a safe and disciplined school environment; and the responsibility to uphold school security and be co-operative; to be treated with respect by the school. 6. THE DUTIES OF LEARNERS Each learner should: Abide to the general code of rules; Adhere to the tuition instruction or any other lawful instruction given by any teacher or senior learner entitled to give such an instruction; Not have the right to demand the alteration of the structure of the learning institution; Not have the right to demand the replacement of any teacher or refuse to attend classes offered by a specific teacher. 7. GENERAL CODE OF RULES When enrolling a learner at this institution, parents/guardians sign the school rules being part of the application form. Hereby they accept and are bound to our disciplinary system. Should the behavior or actions of the learner lead to legal action on behalf of the school, which results in any legal costs, the parent/guardian will be liable for such costs. If a student infringes the code of conduct, he/she will have a fair opportunity to present his case to the grade educator, deputy principal or principal. If he/she is found guilty, the relevant measures as set out here, will be applied. Disregard of disciplinary measures may lead to a 2 - 5 day suspension. Disregard thereafter may ultimately lead to expulsion. HANDLING/ACTIONS FOR INFRINGEMENTS Infringements that lead to immediate action: a cell phone switched on or used during school time leads to confiscation for one week; jewelry not allowed and hats/caps other than the prescribed school cap leads to confiscation for 3 months. Less serious infringements are: chewing gum; spitting; hiding another person s property; caressing/hugging in school uniform; graffiti/slogans/symbols/political slogans on a school bag, diary, text book, pencil case; late for school/class without excuse; forbidden areas; swearing; lying; littering in rooms/on grounds; in possession of lighter/matches; LRC member neglecting duty; diary/timetable at home; using a public telephone without permission during school time; accompanying smoker; textbooks/scripts not covered; fail to return a tear-off slip/report; shirts not tucked in; not wearing a tie during winter. These infringements require 3 verbal warnings. Thereafter detention may be given/parental interviews requested. Continual repetition of infringements may lead to 2 - 5 days suspensions after parent/s have/have been informed verbally and in writing. During suspension a learner will not be allowed to participate in any school activities, including sport and cultural meetings and tests. Further continual repetition of these infringements may lead to disciplinary action and ultimately to expulsion. More serious infringements are the following: gambling; disruptive behavior; ill-mannered/disobedient toward teacher/prefect/class leaders/general rules; disregard class rules; in possession of satanic literature/symbols; poor school attendance - 3 days without a doctor s certificate/parents note; copying homework; homework not done/not done to satisfaction x 2; copying in a test/examination paper; forging a letter or making a false phone call; signing out with a false letter/forging a signature; smoking in school uniform - also outside the school grounds; vandalism; truancy/not in invigilation class/not in register class; intentional breaking of other student/s possessions; fighting/threatening/ intimidation/victimization; attempting to injure other student/s/injuring others/assault; defamation of character/slander/ offending remarks; in possession of material of a sexual nature; misconduct at school activity - even in civilian dress; leaving school grounds without permission; non-attendance of detention; study at home during school hours without permission; dressed inappropriately. These transgressions may lead to detention/parental interviews. Continual repetition of infringements may lead to 2 - 5 days suspension after parent/s has/have been informed verbally and in writing. During suspension a learner will not be allowed to participate in any school activities, including sport and cultural meetings and tests. Further continual repetition of these infringements may lead to disciplinary action and ultimately to expulsion. Very serious infringements are the following: under the influence of alcohol/drugs; in possession of alcohol/drugs/sniffs glue or other intoxicating substances; in possession of firearms/dangerous instruments/knife; theft; poor school attendance - 15 days without doctors certificate; theft of exam/test papers/acquiring a copy/withholding information pertaining to the aforementioned; physical or psychological violence against teaching staff; spray painting or defacing of buildings and other permanent structures; organizing mass-action; sexual harassment; arson, racism. These transgressions are handled by the principal/the deputies. Warning. Suspension of 5 school days. No school activities or tests during suspension - 0% for tests/examinations. Process for expulsion commences. The seriousness of an infringement may lead to disciplinary action and ultimately elicit expulsion. General A parent interview may be conducted personally/telephonically. If a group of students is involved, all parents are notified. According to section 9 of the South African Schools Law, No. 84 of 1996, suspension is defined as a temporary measure and the school can execute a maximum of 5 school days. According to the same section expulsion is a permanent measure which is executed by the head of the Education Department. 8. SPECIFIC CODE OF SCHOOL RULES All learners have to be dressed in school uniform at all times, from the time that they leave home till the time that they arrive back home again. Learners are the image of the school and they have to be ambassadors of the school whenever they are dressed in school uniform. Learners are not allowed to color their hair under any circumstances. GIRLS Long hair (touching the shirt collar) has to be tied up properly. Only plain white, plain aqua green or plain black accessories are allowed. However, beads are not allowed. Girls are allowed braided, platted hair styles, however such styles should be maintained to look tidy at all times. No frizz hair styles, supported by gel, are allowed. BOYS All boys have to shave their hair in a proper school boy hair style (short back and sides, top not longer than 3 cm.). Dread locks are no longer allowed for boys. Braids and plats are no longer allowed for boys. No frizz hair styles, supported by gel, are allowed. Boys are not allowed to tie up their hair. Beards and moustaches will not be tolerated and all boys have to start shaving when facial hair becomes visible. 8.3 SCHOOL HOURS School starts promptly at 08h00. Learners have to be at school at 07h50 in order for school to start at 08h00. All learners have to remain at school until the bell goes at 14h00. 8.4 TEXT BOOKS Text books remain the school s property and must be taken care of and maintained .
